Browns signed RB/KR Clifton Smith.

Josh Cribbs' status is in doubt after he dislocated four toes against the Jets last week. Expect Smith to take over on both kickoffs and punts at Jacksonville.

The Bucs are considering bringing back RB/KR Clifton Smith.

Smith was with the Bucs in training camp but failed to make the final roster before catching on with the Dolphins, who waived him after a couple games. Tampa is looking for depth with the loss of Kareem Huggins.

Julius Jones reportedly beat out free agent RB/KR Clifton Smith for the fourth running back job in New Orleans Tuesday.

Smith is a return specialist and potential third-down back. The "battle" for the job suggests Jones isn't being counted on for more than a very minor role with the Saints.

Dolphins waived RB/KR Clifton Smith.

The coaching staff apparently decided they couldn't afford to carry a return specialist when he's averaging just 4.5 yards per punt return and 17.3 yards per kickoff return. Davone Bess will likely take over on punts with Patrick Cobbs and Nolan Carroll on kickoffs.

Newly signed Clifton Smith was the Dolphins' primary kick and punt returner in Sunday's opener.

Patrick Cobbs and Davone Bess will just be supporting Smith in the return game going forward. Now healthy, Smith has Pro Bowl upside as a returner.

Dolphins signed KR Clifton Smith, formerly of the Bucs.

Smith is listed as a running back, but he won't get any reps there. He's over his concussion issues and should return both kicks and punts for the Dolphins this season.

Free agent KR Clifton Smith is reportedly set to sign with the Dolphins.

The Dolphins were far from convinced that Nolan Carroll and Patrick Cobbs were the answer on kickoffs returns. Smith is likely to take over punt-return duties from Davone Bess as well. If healthy, he's one of the best specialists in the business.

The Dolphins will reportedly work out KR Clifton Smith on Wednesday.

Smith visited Green Bay on Tuesday, though the Packers reportedly still have reservations about his concussion issues from last season. If his health checks out, Smith would be an upgrade on returns for either team.

Free agent KR/PR Clifton Smith will visit the Packers Tuesday.

Ironically, Smith lost his roster spot in Tampa Bay when the Bucs claimed former Packers RB Kregg Lumpkin off waivers. No signing is imminent, but the former Pro Bowler's agent said Smith will decide between several offers Tuesday.

Bucs waived KR/PR Clifton Smith.

It looks like the Bucs will go with some combination of Micheal Spurlock and Preston Parker in the return game, though Sammie Stroughter can also do both. Smith is only 25 years old and already has made a Pro Bowl, so we've got to think he'll be claimed. The Bucs appear to have tired of his injuries.

The Tampa Tribune's Ira Kaufman suspects that KR Clifton Smith is "breathing easier" after the Bucs released Derrick Ward.

Smith was reportedly on the roster bubble when he was dealing with a "gout-like" condition in his knee earlier this month. He's since returned to game action and should be locked in as the primary kick returner once again.

Bucs KR Clifton Smith sat out Saturday's preseason game with a rare sort of inflammation that has been likened to gout.

The Bucs aren't sure what's causing the issues in Smith's knee, but they expect him back on the practice field this week. It's another hurdle for Smith after concussions marred his 2009 campaign. The former Pro Bowl returner may need to prove he's healthy this week just to make the final roster.

Buccaneers KR Clifton Smith will make his preseason debut Saturday against the Chiefs.

Though Smith seems content that he won't see time at RB, the former Pro Bowl return man should pull ahead of Micheal Spurlock as the team's return man if he can prove that he's 100% healthy. It's a nice comeback story.

Bucs KR Clifton Smith says he doesn't even think about the concussions that marred his 2009 season.

Smith has a lot of heart after suffering multiple serious concussions over the last few years. He's one of the better returners in the game when healthy and isn't looking timid in camp. The Tampa Tribune speculates that a healthy Smith would mean Micheal Spurlock's roster spot is in serious jeopardy.
