The Ravens plan to give veteran James Ihedigbo the first shot at replacing Bernard Pollard at strong safety, but will likely have him compete with a draft pick.
Ihedigbo has starting experience, but is more useful as a special teamer. It's a deep draft for safeties, so Ihedigbo may well get beaten out in camp. The Ravens could eventually sign another veteran, as well. Mar 29 - 10:03 AM

Ravens re-signed S James Ihedigbo to a one-year contract.

Ihedigbo, 29, appeared in all 16 regular season games in Baltimore last season, making three starts. He recorded 25 tackles and one sack without forcing a takeaway. Ihedigbo is best suited as a special teams gunner. The Ravens have SS Bernard Pollard in place and will look elsewhere to replace Ed Reed.

Ravens signed S James Ihedigbo, formerly of the Patriots.

28-year-old Ihedigbo is stretched on defense, but has long been a productive special teamer and can contribute immediately in that role. Look for Ihedigbo to also operate as Baltimore's third safety behind Bernard Pollard and Ed Reed.

The Ravens visited with free agent S James Ihedigbo on Saturday.

Ihedigbo was a rotational safety with Patriots, but is a liability in pass coverage, and would be accepting a special teams role in Baltimore. Emanuel Cook (fractured leg) was injured in the preseason and is out for the year.

Patriots released S James Ihedigbo; waived S Sergio Brown

Ihedigbo appeared in all 16 games last season, starting 12, but was made expendable after the Pats used a sixth-round pick on S Nate Ebner. Ihedigbo played nearly 2/3 of New England's defensive snaps in 2011, but was a frequent burn victim in coverage. He's best utilized as a special teamer. Brown was given heavy snaps as the Pats' secondary descended into injury chaos, but is a pedestrian talent, at best.

James Ihedigbo's one-year, $700,000 deal with the Patriots is a "minimum salary benefit" contract.

It means Ihedigbo will count just $605,000 against the salary cap, but also that the Patriots won't be able to re-sign him before the beginning of free agency next offseason. Laurent Robinson and Jordan Babineaux were minimum salary benefit players last year.

Patriots re-signed S James Ihedigbo.

The 28-year-old Ihedigbo played two-thirds of the Pats' 2011 defensive snaps, although that number will decrease substantially this season. He's more of a special teamer, and won't threaten Pat Chung, Steve Gregory, or Tavon Wilson.

Patriots safety James Ihedigbo briefly left Monday's game with a shoulder injury, but returned in the first quarter and finished the game.

Ihedigbo was brought to the Patriots to contribute on special teams, and with Josh Barrett going on I.R. he is now thrust into a starting role. Practice squad call-up Ross Ventrone replaced him, and both are well-below average players trying to put their finger in the dike. Valued practice squad signee Sergio Brown has fallen behind Ventrone.

Patriots agreed to terms with S James Ihedigbo, formerly of the Jets.

Ihedigbo, 27, racked up 11 special teams tackles with New York last season. The Pats would be smart to make sure Ihedigbo doesn't play snaps on defense if he makes the final 53. He struggles badly in both coverage and run support.

The Jets have decided not to bring back restricted free agent S James Ihedigbo.

With Brodney Pool surprisingly deciding to return to the Jets and Eric Smith stepping into a larger role, there's no room for Ihedigbo.

Jets extended a right of first refusal tender to restricted free agent S James Ihedigbo.

Ihedigbo was undrafted in 2008, so his tender comes without draft-pick compensation. As a reserve safety and special teamer, Ihedigbo won't draw much interested as a restricted free agent.

Jets S James Ihedigbo's knee injury is not believed to be serious.

Ihedigbo will rest in Week 17 in order to get ready for the playoffs. The backup safety has 22 tackles and three sacks on the season.
Mon, Dec 27, 2010 08:28:00 AM

Jets S James Ihedigbo was shaken up early in the third quarter trying to make a tackle on Bears KR Devin Hester. He did not return.

He appeared to injure his knee when he slipped trying to make the tackle. The Jets are extremely thin at the safety position, with former UFL S Emanuel Cook as the only healthy player behind Brodney Pool and Eric Smith.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said he's "hopeful" S James Ihedigbo (ankle/knee) will return in Week 15.

Ihedigbo sat out in Week 14, but his injury isn't serious and it's a pain threshold issue. With Eric Smith likely out and Jim Leonhard done for the season, the Jets would love to have him back.

Jets S James Ihedigbo (ankle/knee) will likely sit out this week.

The good news is that an MRI on his injured ankle and knee didn't show anything too serious. He's considered day-to-day and when he returns will depend on his threshold for pain. Emanuel Cook has been brought in for depth with Ihedigbo ailing.
