Colts RCB Vontae Davis (knee) is practicing in full for Week 9.
"He's ready to go," were the words of coach Chuck Pagano on Thursday. It's a major bullet dodged for the Colts, who came absolutely unglued against the pass after Davis was forced from last week's loss to the Steelers. Davis has been one of the league's very best corners this season. Oct 30 - 1:40 PM

Vontae Davis (knee) is practicing Thursday.

Davis went down early in the Week 8 loss to the Steelers and didn't return. But after an MRI came back clean, Davis is on track to suit up in Monday night's game against the Giants. He's PFF's No. 3 corner in terms of coverage this season, behind only Chris Harris and Brandon Flowers.

The MRI on Vontae Davis' knee came back negative.

The Colts can breathe a sigh of relief as their dominant, 1A corner has avoided any ligament tears. We'll have to wait a bit more to find the exact diagnosis, as he still could miss time with a sprain or other knee issue. Note that the Colts have a bye following Monday night's game against the Giants, so it's possible they'll play it safe. If Josh Gordy has to start opposite Greg Toler, it'll be a massive upgrade for the entire Giants pass game.

Coach Chuck Pagano doesn't believe the knee injury sustained by CB Vontae Davis Sunday is too serious.

Davis went down early in Sunday's loss at Pittsburgh and was ruled out for the game shortly thereafter. So even though Pagano's words suggest there are no ligament tears here, it doesn't mean his elite 1A corner is in the clear. Note that the Colts have a bye following Monday night's game against the Giants.

Colts RCB Vontae Davis was forced from Indy's Week 8 game against the Steelers with a right knee injury, and will not return.

Josh Gordy is now in the game opposite Greg Toler. Davis was originally listed as questionable as he tried to get loose on the sideline, but was ruled out early in the second quarter. It's a massive loss for the Colts' defense, as Davis has arguably been the league's best corner this season. His status will be updated sometime in the next 24 hours.
Oct 26 - 5:27 PM

Colts re-signed CB Vontae Davis to a four-year, $39 million contract.

The deal includes a whopping $20 million guaranteed. Monday reports had Davis getting away from Indy, but the Colts were never going to let a player they surrendered a 2013 second-rounder for get away without a fight. Davis can be a bit of a knucklehead, but is a legitimately elite player when on his game. He was in 2013, grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 3 corner.

TFY Draft Insider Tony Pauline reports "word amongst insiders" is the Jets are "going hard" after free agent CB Vontae Davis.

The Jets are in the market for a No. 1 corner after releasing Antonio Cromartie on Monday. PFT's Mike Florio reported Davis is expected to sign a contract on Tuesday, but it's not expected to be with the Colts. The Jets could be that mystery team with a substantial offer on the table. Coach Rex Ryan loves bigger, man-cover corners. Davis fits the bill at 5-foot-11, 204 pounds.

Profootballtalk reports free agent Vontae Davis is expected to sign a contract on Tuesday, but "not with the Colts."

Reporter Mike Florio does allow that it's "not over yet, though." Either way, it directly contradicts CBS' Sunday report that Davis was "nearing a deal" with the Colts, and that there was "every expectation" an accord would be hammered out by Monday. One of the market's top free agents, Davis should have a new deal/home by tomorrow evening.
Mar 10 - 5:47 PM

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Colts are "nearing a deal" with free agent RCB Vontae Davis.

La Canfora says there's "every expectation" the sides will strike an accord by Monday. If so, Davis will never make it to Tuesday's open market. Davis is seeking a contract worth in excess of $8 million per year, and perhaps closer to $10 million annually after Sam Shields broke the bank in Green Bay. Davis is better than Shields. He's also younger, turning 26 years old this May.
Mar 9 - 8:21 PM

The Indianapolis Star reports free agent CB Vontae Davis is looking for a deal in excess of Brent Grimes' four-year, $32 million contract.

It's not a surprise considering Davis is younger than Grimes and coming off an equally excellent year, grading out as a top-three corner by Pro Football Focus. The Colts remain interested in bringing Davis back, but he appears set to test the market and could very well command over $8 million annually. Davis is our No. 3 free agent corner remaining, behind only Aqib Talib and Alterraun Verner.
Mar 7 - 6:13 PM

The Indianapolis Star reports the Colts and free agent CB Vontae Davis aren't close to a deal.

"No deal is imminent, and the sides are relatively far apart in negotiations," writes Stephen Holder. The Colts have roughly 12 hours before Davis' agent can legally begin negotiating with the other 31 teams. At this point, Davis may as well test the open market and see what's out there. The Colts badly want to re-sign Davis but seem unwilling to commit the top dollars he wants right now.
Mar 7 - 12:07 PM

CBS' Jason La Canfora reports that the Colts will not use the franchise tag on free agent CB Vontae Davis.

The deadline to apply the tag is Monday at 4pm ET. By not using it on Davis, the Colts are running the risk of losing PFF's No. 3 corner from 2013 and a guy they gave up a second-round pick to land last August. Ultimately, however, we'd expect a deal to get done here. The Colts have the fourth-most cap space in the league and Davis' press skills are a key to their defense. He came in 16th on Evan Silva's top-150 free agents list.
Mar 3 - 8:10 AM

The Colts and free agent CB Vontae Davis are still in the early stages of contract talks.

The Colts better get moving on their No. 1 priority. Per the Indy Star, a deal with PFF's No. 3 overall corner is "far from imminent" with free agency set to open on March 11. Davis is going to be expensive, but the Colts have tons of cap space and desperately need their elite every-down press corner. We'd be surprised if there wasn't a reunion here.
Feb 20 - 9:29 AM

Free agent CB Vontae Davis has been adamant that he wants to stay with the Colts.

According to the Indy Star, Davis "has grown quite fond of the Colts' players and coaches after an unmemorable experience with the Dolphins his first three seasons." It's fantastic news for GM Ryan Grigson, whose number one offseason priority is to retain Davis. He graded out as PFF's No. 3 corner this season behind only Darrelle Revis and Brent Grimes, dominating the right side while playing press coverage.
Feb 3 - 10:15 AM

Colts GM Ryan Grigson confirmed re-signing impending free agent CB Vontae Davis is a priority.

"Any cover corner is high in the pecking order," Grigson said. "Vontae is a heck of a player. He can be as good as he wants to be. There's no reason he shouldn't be in the Pro Bowl every year." The Colts currently have over $35 million in 2014 salary cap space, so working out a new deal with Davis shouldn't be a problem. Davis is our No. 4 unrestricted free agent cornerback.
