The Indy Star's "early hunch" is that Darrius Heyward-Bey will alternate with T.Y. Hilton in two-wide sets.
This flies in the face of ESPN's Paul Kuharsky, who said Tuesday that he didn't expect Heyward-Bey to "be in anyone's way." The end result will be determined on the practice field. DHB certainly has the natural skill set to push Hilton for reps, but he's shown poor hands and shoddy route-running through four NFL seasons. Hilton, meanwhile, had more touchdowns (7) as a rookie than Heyward-Bey did in his first three seasons combined. We suspect Hilton will end up earning the majority of snaps opposite Reggie Wayne. ESPN's AFC South blog believes Darrius Heyward-Bey "won't be in anyone's way" with the Colts.

In other words, Heyward-Bey won't play ahead of T.Y. Hilton and will have to battle LaVon Brazill for No. 3 wideout reps. He's making just $3M on a one-year deal, $1.5M of which is guaranteed. Heyward-Bey will bring 4.3 speed to the Colts' offense, likely in a situational deep threat role at first. He'll have to show much more than he did in Oakland to earn regular snaps.

Colts agreed to terms with WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, formerly of the Raiders, on a one-year contract.

Heyward-Bey, 26, caught 41 passes for 606 yards and five touchdowns with Oakland last season. The former No. 7 overall pick will slide into the receiver spot vacated by Donnie Avery. Although Avery started 15 games for the Colts last season, we'd expect DHB to work in as a deep threat behind Reggie Wayne and second-year burner T.Y. Hilton. Heyward-Bey has averaged 14.8 YPC in his four seasons, compared to Avery's 12.8 career YPC. USA Today's Mike Garafolo reports the deal is worth up to $3 million and contains $1.5 million guaranteed.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press thinks the Vikings could "try to get" free agent Darrius Heyward-Bey on a "low-cost deal."

Since being released by the Raiders almost three weeks ago, Heyward-Bey has visited the Colts and Lions. The Vikings make even more sense. Heyward-Bey would be an upgrade at X receiver on Jerome Simpson. DHB is only 26 years old and should be open to a "prove-it deal" ala Donnie Avery last offseason.
Mar 31 - 10:44 AM

Free agent WR Darrius Heyward-Bey called the possibility of signing with the Lions "very appealing."

DHB left his meeting with the Lions on Wednesday without a contract, but it sounds like he's leaning towards accepting their offer over the Colts. Miscast as a full-time starter with the Raiders, Heyward-Bey will be a situational deep threat wherever he lands.

Free agent Darrius Heyward-Bey left his Lions visit without a contract, but hinted he'll soon decide between the Lions and Colts.

DHB visited the Colts on Tuesday. He isn't known to have scheduled any other trips. Heyward-Bey would be a situational deep threat for either team, but is a good fit for two of the league's most vertical offenses.

Darrius Heyward-Bey left his visit to Indianapolis without a contract.

The Colts are moving on in their search of a third receiver to play behind Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton. The Indy Star cites free agents Brandon Lloyd and Mohamed Massaquoi as options, but they may be better off just looking to the draft or developing LaVon Brazill. Heyward-Bey is meeting with the Lions Wednesday.
Mar 27 - 10:43 AM

Free agent WR Darrius Heyward-Bey will visit the Lions Wednesday.

This is an intriguing fit for Heyward-Bey. The Lions are desperate for wideout help thanks to Ryan Broyles' torn ACL and Titus Young's meltdown. They also need a true burner that can take the top off the defense and pull some attention off Calvin Johnson. Heyward-Bey doesn't have great hands and isn't a polished route-runner, but he can certainly fly. The former No. 7 overall pick ran a 4.30 at the 2009 combine, the fastest time in his class. DHB was still scheduled to meet with the Colts Tuesday.
Mar 26 - 8:24 AM

Free agent Darrius Heyward-Bey will visit the Colts.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Heyward-Bey could visit as early as Monday. It's DHB's first known looksee since getting cut loose by the Raiders. Heyward-Bey wouldn't be signed as a starter, but as a replacement for deep-threat Donnie Avery. DHB was always miscast as a starter in Oakland, but could thrive in a situational role where he's deployed to take the lid off of opposing defenses.
Mar 25 - 8:25 AM

A source tells PFT the Jets are interested in free agent Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Per PFT's Mike Florio, it's unclear how much interest the Jets really have, but they're the first team DHB has been directly linked to since getting cut loose by the Raiders. Florio also reports the Colts haven't expressed interest in the former No. 7 pick. Colts owner Jim Irsay has been making vague and bizarre allusions to his team's pursuit of a wideout on Twitter. DHB has more than enough raw skill to get a second chance, but landing in dysfunctional New York isn't what he needs coming out of dysfunctional Oakland.
Mar 18 - 8:32 AM

Raiders released WR Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Widely panned as a stretch when the Raiders took him seventh overall in the 2009 draft, Heyward-Bey proved the pundits right. Showing stones for hands and an inability to run anything besides a vertical route, he recorded a grand total of 11 touchdowns and averaged 37.8 yards per game in four seasons. The Raiders save $5.341 million by cutting him now, one year before his rookie deal was due to expire. They can comfortably move forward with Denarius Moore, Rod Streater, Juron Criner, and Jacoby Ford. Heyward-Bey will get a second chance thanks to his raw skills, but he's unlikely to ever emerge as a difference-maker.
Mar 12 - 7:58 PM

The Raiders could save $5.341 million against the 2013 salary cap by releasing Darrius Heyward-Bey.

DHB is due a prohibitive $7.721 million base salary in the final year of his rookie deal, and Steve Corkran of the Contra Costa Times has already said it's "pay cut or hit the road time" for the former No. 7 overall pick. Oakland could move forward with Rod Streater and Juron Criner behind Denarius Moore.
Feb 13 - 10:21 PM

Darrius Heyward-Bey is not expected back with the Raiders at his currently scheduled $7.721 million base salary.

"Pay cut or hit the road time," beat writer Steve Corkran quipped. After a promising 2011 season, Heyward-Bey took a big step back in 2012, failing to fit into Greg Knapp's West Coast offense. Perhaps new OC Greg Olson's system would be a better fit, but Heyward-Bey won't get a chance if he doesn't slash his salary.
Jan 26 - 1:15 AM

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, WR Darrius Heyward-Bey and DT Tommy Kelly are candidates to be released by the Raiders in a salary cap crunch.

Due a prohibitive $7.72 million while coming off concussion and hamstring injuries in 2012, DHB has very little trade value. It's the same story for Kelly at $6.5 million. Already close to the 2013 salary cap limit of $121 million, the Raiders will have to make tough cuts this offseason.
Jan 4 - 12:14 PM

Darrius Heyward-Bey caught two passes for 13 yards with a touchdown in the Raiders' Week 17 loss to the Chargers.

Heyward-Bey started 15 games this year and played the majority of snaps. He still managed a mere 41 catches for 606 yards and five touchdowns. With four NFL seasons now in the books, we can comfortably say that the light switch is not going to come on for DHB. He's been outplayed by both Denarius Moore and Rod Streater down the stretch and is mercifully (for the Raiders) entering the final year of his rookie deal in 2013.
