Saints RBs coach Bret Ingalls believes Lynell Hamilton is "close (to), if not at where he was" before tearing his ACL last August.

Hamilton's chances of making the Saints' 53-man roster are essentially nil, but it would do him a world of good to at least prove he's healthy during training camp. If he does, he could latch on somewhere else as a short-yardage specialist.

ESPN's Pat Yasinskas believes that there's still a chance restricted free agent Lynell Hamilton will be brought back by the Saints.

Yasinskas says Hamilton "hasn't been forgotten," but does concede he's facing an uphill battle with Pierre Thomas, Chris Ivory and Reggie Bush all likely to be back in 2011. The main thing he has going for him are the injuries that ravaged the Saints' back-field in 2010. They could view depth there as key this summer.

The Times-Picayune confirms that Lynell Hamilton's 2011 role with the Saints is unclear.

With Chris Ivory (foot surgery) confident he'll be healthy, the Saints may not have room for Hamilton. He's coming off an ACL tear and was less talented than Ivory even before the injury. We'd consider Hamilton a poor bet to make the Saints out of camp.

Saints RB Lynell Hamilton is expected back with the team in 2011.

He'll go to camp, at least. Hamilton, though, is a restricted free agent who will require a tender worth over $1 million. After he missed all of the 2010 season with a torn right ACL, Hamilton won't be worth that much money.

Saints waived/injured RB Lynell Hamilton.

Done for the season with an ACL tear, Hamilton will likely pass through waivers and be placed on injured reserve. Already red-flagged as an injury-risk coming into the league, Hamilton now faces an uncertain future. The Saints are already on the lookout for a short-term fix and will seek a more permanent power back in the offseason. Dynasty leaguers should feel free to cut Hamilton loose.

A Wednesday MRI confirmed that Saints RB Lynell Hamilton suffered a torn right ACL at this morning's practice.

He's out for the year. The 2010 season is setting up very well for Pierre Thomas, who now has only marginal talents P.J. Hill and Chris Ivory to fend off for goal-line carries. Short-yardage backs won't be hard to find after final cuts, but anyone acquired in September will take time to learn the offense. Thomas should open the year as New Orleans' top option in the red zone.

Saints RB Lynell Hamilton is undergoing X-rays on his injured right knee.

Coach Sean Payton confirmed the injury happened while Hamilton was planting his foot, which doesn't help quell rumors he has a torn ligament. The Saints will likely look to the waiver wire for tailback bodies this week.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Saints believe the knee injury sustained by Lynell Hamilton Wednesday morning is a torn ACL.

Hamilton has a laundry list of major knee injuries dating back to San Diego State, so this could be a career-threatening situation for the former undrafted free agent. Hamilton was supposedly going to pick up some of the inside touches that Mike Bell handled last year. Pierre Thomas now has a much stronger chance to take over goal-line duties, though he'll have to hold off undrafted youngsters P.J. Hill and Chris Ivory. The Saints could also revisit free agent Ladell Betts, though he's far from a "power back."

Saints RB Lynell Hamilton was helped off the field with a knee injury Wednesday morning.

Coach Sean Payton described the injury as "kind of a freak deal" that happened when he planted. Hamilton has been sent for tests on his knee. P.J. Hill and Chris Ivory are next up on the depth chart.

Saints RB Lynell Hamilton has been putting in a lot of extra work over the offseason, and the team's coaches are noticing.

Coach Sean Payton says he can't remember many times when he didn't see Hamilton around the team's training facility this offseason. With Mike Bell out of the picture, Hamilton has a shot to earn the short-yardage role and Payton says "we are pleased with what he is doing" so far. Hamilton will have to hold off youngsters P.J. Hill and Chris Ivory for the gig.

Coach Sean Payton reiterated that Lynell Hamilton is getting a shot to be the Saints' primary short-yardage back, replacing Mike Bell.

Ideally from a fantasy perspective, Pierre Thomas would win this job, but Hamilton appears to have the edge. "We've really not hesitated putting him in short-yardage or putting him in goal-line," said Payton of Hamilton, while also praising his work ethic. "We do have a confidence level in what he can do."

Saints coach Sean Payton mentioned Lynell Hamilton first when speaking about a replacement for departed short-yardage specialist Mike Bell.

"We've got real strong opinions on Lynell Hamilton, certainly Pierre Thomas, Reggie Bush," Payton said. "How we replace it will be up to us in terms of whether it's a veteran player or a younger player." Hamilton has an extremely checkered history in terms of health. The Saints could consider a power back like Anthony Dixon or Jonathan Dwyer at the end of round two.

Saints beat writer Jeff Duncan suggests that Lynell Hamilton could be the team's answer as a short-yardage back in 2010.

Hamilton, 24, definitely has more upside than a free agent like LaDainian Tomlinson. Though he averaged just 3.6 YPC last season, Hamilton is a big body at 6'0/235 and has shown a nose for the end zone when given the chance. Stanford's Toby Gerhart in the second round could be an alternative.

Saints declared RB Lynell Hamilton, LB Anthony Waters, WR Adrian Arrington, TEs Darnell Dinkins and Tory Humphrey, third QB Chase Daniel, OL Jamar Nesbit, and DL Paul Spicer inactive for Super Bowl XLIV.

Hamilton is the only injured player on New Orleans' roster.
