Recently re-signed RT Andre Smith was absent from the start of Bengals OTAs on Tuesday.
"He’s got to deal with some stuff that he has to take care of and when he gets it taken care of he will be back up here," coach Marvin Lewis said. The sessions are "voluntary," but it's not a good sign that Smith is a no-show for the Bengals' first workouts since he signed his three-year, $18 million deal. SI's Peter King reported before the start of free agency that teams were "scared" Smith would lose his motivation once he signed a a long-term deal. Cincinnati can only hope Smith doesn't revert to his old ways, and stays in shape. May 21 - 5:46 PM

Bengals re-signed RT Andre Smith to a three-year, $18 million contract.

Despite being only 26 years old and grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 4 offensive tackle in 2012, Smith generated no interest on the free agent market. Penny-pinching Bengals owner Mike Brown waited out Smith and his agent and came away a winner. Cincinnati will again field one of the top lines in football with Andrew Whitworth on Andy Dalton's blindside, Clint Boling and Kevin Zeitler at guard, Kyle Cook at center, and Smith at right tackle.

According to the Bengals' official website, nothing appears imminent in talks with free agent RT Andre Smith.

Although coach Marvin Lewis said Tuesday that the "sun is emerging" in negotiations, it doesn't look like the Bengals are going to get Smith under contract before the draft. If they use the No. 21 overall pick on a tackle like Florida State's Menelik Watson, we'll know there's concern that a deal won't get done.

Coach Marvin Lewis thinks the "sun is emerging" in talks with free agent RT Andre Smith.

Talks have undoubtedly been stalled by the dampened market for right tackles and the Bengals' penchant for pinching pennies. It sounds like the two sides are finally making some progress, as Lewis remains "hopeful" a deal gets done before the draft. Either way, it remains unlikely that Smith will move on from the team that drafted him sixth overall in 2009.

Per the Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy, the Bengals talked with free agent RT Andre Smith over the weekend.

Things are moving at a snail's pace between the Bengals and Smith -- if they're even moving at all. There's no question that it's a good sign the two sides are still talking, but they've been in contact all offseason and nothing has developed. Ideally, the Bengals would lock Smith up before the draft, but the 26-year-old will have to lower his asking price for that to happen.
Apr 22 - 7:02 PM

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said Friday that he's hopeful free agent Andre Smith will be re-signed before the draft.

"We’re getting down to the time of that because we feel it’s important," Lewis said. "He wants to get it done but he has to get his representation and our people to come to an agreement. He’s anxious for it to occur and hopefully it happens quickly." Lewis wouldn't rule out drafting a new right tackle if Smith isn't signed before the draft. The Bengals clearly want his asking price to come down.

Profootballtalk reports there's an "increasing chance" the Bengals won't re-sign free agent RT Andre Smith.

According to a league source, the Bengals are "now inclined to see if they can find a cheaper and younger replacement for Smith via the draft." Amid a league-wide market "reset," Smith has refused to lower his asking price, and it's resulted in nearly nonexistent interest. At this point, Smith's best bet may be taking a one-year deal and hitting the market again in 2014. He'd draw big-time interest if his 2013 went anything like his 2012.
Apr 8 - 11:15 AM

The National Football Post's Dan Pompei reports several personnel men he's spoken with believe free agent RT Andre Smith is "highly overrated."

This explains Smith's lack of a market nearly a month into free agency. Smith, 26, made 16 starts for the first time in his career last year, and finally lived up to his draft status as a mauling run blocker and fine pass protector. However, Smith missed 21 games in his first three seasons while battling weight concerns. Teams are scared he'll revert to his old ways after a hefty payday.
Apr 7 - 9:11 AM

SI's Peter King believes the "door is open" for free agent RT Andre Smith to leave Cincinnati.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported Sunday the sides are "not close" to a new deal. Cincinnati's offer is clearly of the "take it or leave it" variety, but the problem for Smith is that he hasn't so much as made a visit since the start of free agency. The longer he waits, the less he may end up settling for in the Queen City.
Apr 1 - 9:55 AM

Per the Cincinnati Enquirer, "indications are" free agent RT Andre Smith and the Bengals are "not close" to a new deal.

There's no telling when a deal will get done, but it's hard to imagine Smith leaving Cincinnati considering how little interest he's received from other clubs. Smith is an ideal scheme fit for the power-blocking Bengals. It appears his pricetag is going to be cheap, which Bengals owner Mike Brown will love.
Mar 31 - 11:16 AM

The Cincinnati Enquirer still expects the Bengals to re-sign free agent RT Andre Smith.

Beat writer Joe Reedy believes a four-year pact worth roughly $26.5 million with $7-$8 million in guarantees would be "best for both parties." That would be less guaranteed money than Sebastian Vollmer settled for in New England, but a much bigger base value. Smith has yet to even make a visit since the start of free agency. It's hard to see him escaping the Queen City.
Mar 26 - 2:14 PM

The Bengals "(hope) to wrap up" contract talks with free agents Andre Smith and Terence Newman by the end of this week.

Reporter Geoff Hobson believes the Bengals are in the "home stretch of getting them resolved either way." Considering the way the tackle market has collapsed, it would be absurd if the Bengals allowed their mauling right tackle to walk, but anything is possible when it comes to Cincinnati and money. It's also possible Smith isn't relenting on unrealistic demands. As for Newman, he tweeted Sunday he was having trouble getting in touch with his agent. So is life on the second tier of free agency.

Owner Mike Brown insists the Bengals are still intent on re-signing free agent RT Andre Smith.

"They know that we want to make a deal, and we want them to engage and get it done," Brown said Friday. Brown is sitting on the most salary-cap loot in the league, but is being predictably stingy. With Smith's market not developing the way it was expected to, the Bengals are likely to remain idle until his price comes down even further. Smith should eventually be back in Cincinnati.
Mar 22 - 1:12 PM

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said he still hopes to get free agent RT Andre Smith under contract within the next few days.

Smith is represented by Ben Dogra, who is also the agent for Jake Long. Once the Long deal gets done, we'd expect some more movement among offensive tackles. Smith has lightly been linked to the Eagles, but has taken no known visits.

ESPN's Dan Graziano suggests the Eagles are looking into free agent right tackles Andre Smith and Sebastian Vollmer.

The offensive line was a major problem area for the 2012 Eagles, but they did solidify right tackle by kicking guard Todd Herremans outside. Perhaps new coach Chip Kelly envisions a healthy Jason Peters at left tackle, Herremans back at his natural inside position and a fresh right tackle. Smith seems like an odd fit in an up-tempo scheme, but Vollmer and Eric Winston would make some sense.
