Panthers re-signed CB Captain Munnerlyn to a one-year contract.
"I'm staying a Carolina Panthers!," Munnerlyn announced on Twitter. The soon-to-be 25-year-old recorded 61 tackles, nine pass breakups, and two interceptions last season. It's a big signing for the Panthers, who are scratching for every dollar right now. Carolina now has six corners under contract for 2013. If the season were to start today, Drayton Florence and Josh Norman would likely start on the outside with Munnerlyn covering the slot. Mar 20 - 8:51 PM

The Charlotte Observer reports the Bears have offered free agent CB Captain Munnerlyn a one-year deal, but that the Panthers "might try to match it."

The Bears need a new nickel corner after losing D.J. Moore to the Panthers, though free agent Kelvin Hayden — who replaced Moore down the stretch last season — could still be an option. Munnerlyn would presumably compete with Moore if he stayed in Carolina.

The Panthers haven't given up on re-signing free agent CB Captain Munnerlyn and will talk to his player reps later Monday.

Carolina is pursuing fellow nickel back-type D.J. Moore, but would prefer Munnerlyn covering the slot in 2013. Munnerlyn has received light interest from the Browns and Dolphins. He's a 5-foot-8, 186-pound sub-package player.
Mar 18 - 4:03 PM

The Dolphins have reportedly shown interest in free agent CB Captain Munnerlyn.

Now that Chris Gamble is gone, Munnerlyn is perhaps the Panthers' biggest priority among their own free agents. We'd be surprised if they let their slot corner get away, but it could turn out to be pricey. The Browns and Dolphins, who have been linked to Munnerlyn, have plenty of cap space and need.

The Browns have shown interest in free agent CB Captain Munnerlyn.

As Mike Lombardi relentlessly leaks info to the media, we're beginning to wonder just which free agents don't interest the Browns. Munnerlyn does have coaching staff ties in Cleveland, most notably to ex-Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski.

Free agent CB Captain Munnerlyn's agent says "four teams" have shown interest in his client.

Munnerlyn said last week that he expects to re-sign with the Panthers if Carolina cut Chris Gamble, and they did just that. Munnerlyn, a solid slot corner with experience, will surely see what the market bears first, though.
Mar 10 - 2:54 PM

Free agent CB Captain Munnerlyn said he expects the Panthers to re-sign him if they cut Chris Gamble.

The cap-strapped Panthers have some serious issues at cornerback. Once they release Gamble as widely expected, they'll only have Josh Thomas, James Dockery and Josh Norman under contract. The Panthers likely want Munnerlyn back as a slot corner with 34 starts of NFL experience, but they'll have to see what his market value is first.
Mar 5 - 9:22 AM

There is a "feeling inside the building" that the Panthers can't afford to re-sign free agent CB Captain Munnerlyn.

This is even with Chris Gamble's release considered a foregone conclusion. Carolina is in awful position against the salary cap and will have little to no flexibility. Munnerlyn, 25 in April, should land on his feet as a slot corner.

Mar 4 - 4:59 PM

The Charlotte Observer says the Panthers would like to re-sign free agent CB Captain Munnerlyn.

Munnerlyn started 11 games in 2012, but that was pretty much by default after Josh Norman failed in his opportunity. Munnerlyn is better suited as a sure-tackling nickel corner and special teams player. He shouldn't be too pricey in a loaded free-agent corner market.
Mar 3 - 1:15 PM

Captain Munnerlyn has lost his starting job to fifth-round rookie Josh Norman.

Munnerlyn gave up more completions than any starting corner last season. He rotated with Norman in Week 1 and then exclusively played the nickel in Week 2. The demotion is bad timing for Munnerlyn, who is in the final year of his rookie contract. "It's hard to say I'm good with it. But it's a part of football," he said.

The Panthers would reportedly prefer incumbent RCB Captain Munnerlyn to settle into a reserve/sub-package role on defense.

Munnerlyn is a strong slot corner, but was stretched covering the outside last season. The Panthers reportedly hope second-year CB Brandon Hogan can step into the lineup opposite LCB Chris Gamble. Rookie Josh Norman is another option, and Darius Butler could be in the mix after making six starts last year.

A playing time escalator has boosted Panthers CB Captain Munnerlyn's 2012 salary from $565,000 to $1.31 million.

Unideal news for a team still roughly $9 million over the projected cap of $120.6 million. Munnerlyn made 57 tackles and two interceptions in 14 games, all starts, last season before landing on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. A seventh-round pick in 2009, he had made just nine career starts coming into 2011.

Panthers placed CB Captain Munnerlyn (hamstring) on injured reserve, ending his season.

As a first-year starter opposite Chris Gamble, Munnerlyn recorded 58 tackles, five passes defensed, and two sacks in 14 games. Munnerlyn will be back in 2012, though the Panthers may decide that his ideal position is nickel corner.

Panthers CB Captain Munnerlyn was forced from Sunday's game in the third quarter with a leg injury.

He's already been ruled out for the rest of the game. With SS Charles Godfrey (shoulder) already out, the Panthers are down two starters in the secondary.

Captain Munnerlyn has a "slim lead" over R.J. Stanford, C.J. Wilson and Robert McClain for the starting corner job opposite Chris Gamble.

Richard Marshall left a decent-sized gap in Carolina when he bolted for the Cardinals. Munnerlyn has nine career starts, but reports this offseason indicated the Panthers would prefer him as a nickel back. There are rumors that Eagles CB Joselio Hanson could end up reuniting with Sean McDermott in Charlotte.
