Bucs coach Greg Schiano reiterated Monday that Josh Freeman will face competition from third-rounder Mike Glennon.
Schiano and GM Mark Dominik were attempting to claim that they haven't lost faith in Freeman, but Schiano couldn't resist putting Freeman's feet to the fire once more. "I try to tell (the media) the truth that I believe in Josh Freeman and he's our starting quarterback," Schiano said. "But I believe in competition." In the NFL, anything less than an unequivocal endorsement should be construed as a lack of faith. The Bucs are going to make Freeman work for his job, plain and simple. May 20 - 12:17 PM

According to ESPN NFC South blogger Pat Yasinskas, there have been "rumblings" that Josh Freeman isn't "as intense" or as much of a "rah-rah leader" as coach Greg Schiano would like.

Schiano is one of the most intense coaches in the league, and he would like his quarterback to be the same type of leader. Freeman has never come across to be that kind of player. It's just another nit-picky offseason item to remind us that Freeman needs to step up his play if he wants to remain in Tampa Bay long-term. He has one year left on his contract at $8.43 million.

Bucs third-round pick Mike Glennon is considered more of a threat to backup Dan Orlovsky than Josh Freeman.

The third-round quarterback selection confirms the Bucs' concerns about Freeman's long-term viability, but he's not entering a camp battle. Reliable Bucs website Pewter Report considers Glennon "two years away" from pushing to start and believes he must add 15 pounds to his long, lanky frame. Freeman is in a contract year, but he doesn't have much to worry about from Glennon.

Josh Freeman insists he has a good relationship with coach Greg Schiano.

Schiano has spent the whole offseason talking up the need for competition at quarterback, and has said he's "not married" to Freeman as his QB. "The entire off-season, I've been in constant communucation with coach,'' Freeman said. "(We've) got a great relationship. Every now and then, somebody will call you and say, 'Hey man, what's up with you and your coach?' But we know how it is. It's something I'm not really concerned about it." Freeman has also insisted he's not worried about going into the final year of his rookie deal without an extension. Few players will be more on the spot than Freeman in 2013.

The Tampa Bay Times reports the Bucs' organization is generally committed to Josh Freeman, but coach Greg Schiano is not "on board."

Per beat writer Stephen Holder, "everything you’ve read and heard" about the Bucs pursuing free-agent quarterbacks has been driven by Schiano. They checked in on Matt Cassel, Carson Palmer, and Chase Daniel and are now expected to draft a middle-round QB. Schiano joined the Bucs last season, three years after the organization used the No. 17 overall pick on Freeman. However, the only "competition" the Bucs have actually signed is incumbent backup Dan Orlovsky. Even if they draft a quarterback, Schiano appears content to let this be a make-or-break season for Freeman.

NFL Network's Albert Breer reports the Buccaneers were in on Matt Cassel before he signed with the Vikings.

Perhaps it was just for a clear-cut backup role, but we'll take it as another sign of the Bucs' shaky confidence in Josh Freeman. They haven't approached him about an extension in a contract year, and coach Greg Schiano hinted at a camp competition just after the season. We wouldn't be surprised if the Bucs drafted a quarterback on the second day. They have the 43rd and 73rd picks.

Josh Freeman's agent had a "really positive" meeting with the Bucs at the Combine.

"They said they definitely believe in Josh, that he is their guy, that they want to reach their goals with him and that they know he is capable of doing the job and are committed to him," Freeman's rep said. It doesn't appear the sides discussed a new contract for a player going into the final year of his rookie deal. Freeman is going to be on the spot in 2013.

Coach Greg Schiano issued a vote of confidence for Josh Freeman Thursday.

Immediately following the season, Schiano said Freeman does things that "frustrate" him and added that he planned to bring in competition. Now he's singing a somewhat different tune and saying those remarks were taken the wrong way. "Josh Freeman is our quarterback," Schiano said. "And I believe that Josh Freeman -- with Josh Freeman -- we'll be able to accomplish our goals." Freeman is entering the final year of his contract.

Bucs GM Mark Dominik says he wants to "increase the competition" at quarterback, but that it's not a greater priority than any other position.

Dominik has made it clear he believes Josh Freeman has to be better in 2013, but he still took some positives away from his 2012. "There are things he did this year that were as good as (Freeman's) been," Dominik said. "Throwing the deep ball, the accuracy on some of the big plays, I thought he used his feet better this year." Dominik has singled out Freeman's completion percentage — a woeful 54.8 in 2012 — as something that must improve, but it's clear Freeman is in no danger of losing his starting job. However, Freeman is all but certain to enter the final year of his rookie contract without an extension.
Jan 22 - 8:39 PM

Bucs GM Mark Dominik says he's "not in a hurry" to get a new deal done with Josh Freeman.

"I'm not in a hurry as general manager of the football team. I've talked to his representation. No one's in a hurry to push anything through because he wants to maximize his ability and we want to make sure with everything that's going on," said Dominik. Freeman will play out the final year of his rookie deal in 2013, then both sides will convene to determine whether to move in a different direction. Tampa Bay is expected to add a quality quarterback to at least push Freeman this offseason.
Jan 14 - 7:11 PM

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the Bucs have no plans to extend Josh Freeman's contract this offseason.

Freeman will play out the 2013 season in the final year of his rookie contract. The Bucs will then determine whether to move on to another quarterback or use the franchise tag while trying to sign him to a long-term deal. Although Freeman set franchise records for yards and touchdowns in 2012, accuracy and consistency were elusive. The Bucs don't want to get stuck in a Mark Sanchez situation with guaranteed money tying their hands if Freeman doesn't improve. Coach Greg Schiano plans to add a quarterback to compete with Freeman in 2013.
Jan 7 - 8:08 AM

Bucs coach Greg Schiano said Monday that he expects to bring in competition for Josh Freeman in 2013.

Freeman put up some big numbers in 2012, but was incredibly inconsistent and faded badly down the stretch. "What I can say is, a 4,000-yard passer, a touchdown record – there’s a lot of things you say, 'Wow,'" Schiano acknowledged. "Are there things that frustrate you? Yeah. There’s things that frustrate him, too. And I’m not ducking the question, because quite frankly, I really like Josh Freeman." The Bucs plan to bring in competition for Freeman that is stronger than incumbent backup Dan Orlovsky. 2013 will be Freeman's contract year.

Josh Freeman completed 19-of-35 passes for 222 yards, one touchdowns, and one interception at Atlanta in Week 17.

Finding Mike Williams in the back of the end zone, Freeman set a franchise single-season record with 27 touchdowns while breaking Vinny Testaverde's (77) Bucs career mark. Although interceptions and accuracy remain bugaboos, Freeman also became the first QB in franchise history to reach 4,000 yards in a season. He finishes his fourth season with a 27:17 TD-to-INT ratio, 54.8 completion rate, and 4,065 yards at 7.29 YPA. Freeman will be a high-end QB2 in 2013 fantasy drafts.

Josh Freeman completed 30-of-54 passes for 372 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions in Tampa's Week 16 loss to the Rams.

Don't let the yards fool you — Freeman had a dreadful game. Freeman was responsible for all four of his interceptions, and watched Rams rookie CB Trumaine Johnson drop two more gimme picks. Freeman locked onto his receivers, and was late on his throws all afternoon. If his first read was covered, he typically froze before making a bad decision. Freeman now has eight interceptions and one touchdown over his past eight quarters of play, and is sporting a 26:16 TD:INT ratio on the year. He'll get a Falcons team that has nothing to play for in Week 17, so perhaps he'll go out on a high note.

Josh Freeman completed 26-of-47 passes for 279 yards, no touchdowns, and four interceptions to go along with a lost fumble as the Bucs were stomped out 41-0 by the Saints in Week 15.

All four of Freeman's interceptions were picked off by the Saints in the red zone, while all four were terrible throws that weren't even close to being completions to his receivers. Sunday's game had the makings of a shootout for both offenses, but Tampa Bay's failed to show up. With Freeman displaying zero ability to beat the Saints through the air, New Orleans stacked the box early on and gobbled up Doug Martin for minimal gains. Martin finished the day with a lousy nine-carry, 16-yard rushing line. Freeman and the Bucs will look to right the ship and finish the season strong when the Rams come to town in Week 16.
