Former Titans LB Gerald McRath has signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
A once-promising fourth-round pick out of Southern Miss, McRath's career was derailed in 2012 by a torn left patellar tendon, one of the toughest injuries an NFL player can suffer. Still only 27, McRath could parlay a big season up north into a league tryout late in training camp or before the 2015 NFL campaign. Sun, Mar 30, 2014 08:43:00 PM

The Titans are not expected to re-sign free agent LB Gerald McRath.

McRath missed the entire 2012 season after tearing his left patellar tendon. He appeared in 30 games in his first three seasons, starting 12. In a weak free-agent class for 4-3 outside linebackers, the talented and lanky McRath could be a bargain buy.

Titans LB Gerald McRath needs surgery to repair a partial tear of his left patellar tendon and is done for the season.

McRath was trying to practice through the injury, but he could no longer go and the Titans realized the knee wasn't getting any better. His loss is a blow to Tennessee's linebacker depth, as McRath was going to be the top backup at all three positions. McRath is "confident" he'll be ready to play in 2013. Talented but star crossed, McRath will be a free agent in March.

Titans LB Gerald McRath is considering undergoing a knee scope.

Penciled in as a strict backup, surgery could endanger McRath's roster spot. The 2009 fourth-round pick acknowledged in July that 2012 was a make-or-break year for his NFL future.

Titans LB Gerald McRath acknowledges 2012 is a make-or-break season for his NFL future.

The 2009 fourth-round pick is entering the final year of his rookie contract. "In my situation, it’s like your senior year in college," McRath said. "You don’t know what’s going to happen after this year, so you have to take full advantage of your opportunities." Not the same player since earning a four-game steroid ban to begin the 2010 season, McRath will enter Week 1 as a strict backup.

Titans LB Gerald McRath left Sunday's game in the first quarter with an left knee injury.

McRath was injured while covering a kick and had to be carted to the locker room. The Titans were already thin at linebacker thanks to Barrett Ruud's groin injury.

Titans declared LB Gerald McRath (knee) inactive for Sunday's game against the Browns.

McRath hasn't recorded a tackle since Week 1, regressing to a strict backup role. Otherwise, the Titans are healthy as they begin the adjustment to playing without Kenny Britt. Nate Washington and Damian Williams are their starting wideouts. The Titans other inactives: QB Rusty Smith, OT Byron Stingily, C/G Kevin Matthews, DT Malcolm Sheppard, DL Zach Clayton and CB Chris Hawkins.

The Titans have been using Gerald McRath primarily as a nickel linebacker so far in training camp.

Will backer Will Witherspoon leaves the field in passing situations, with McRath and Barrett Ruud staying on for pass coverage duties. Sam linebacker Akeem Ayers could be involved in the nickel package as a blitzer. McRath is slated to open the season as a backup, but he'll be pushing for Witherspoon's job all year.

Titans SLB Gerald McRath is in the process of adding 10 pounds after playing last season in the 225-228 range.

Not fat weight -- muscle. McRath hopes that the increased pounds "will protect my body in the long run." McRath was an excellent run defender after returning from a four-game suspension in 2010, racking up 58 tackles in 12 games (seven starts), as well as 1.5 sacks. He'll return as a starter in 2011.

Titans LB Gerald McRath is expected to work with the first team in Sunday's game against the Cowboys.

"He had a good week,'' said head coach Jeff Fisher. "I don't know how much, but I expect him to play.'' McRath emerged as team leader in 2009, but missed the first four games of 2010 because of a suspension.

With LB Gerald McRath off suspension, Titans coach Jeff Fisher indicated Monday that McRath won't immediately be installed as a starter.

McRath has impact potential on defense, but Fisher apparently intends to ease him in. "He'll be involved on special teams and will see some defensive action," said Fisher of McRath. "How much he’ll play I don’t know."

Suspended Titans LB Gerald McRath claims that his four-game ban did not result from steroid use.

"I have no idea (what the substance was)," McRath said. "I didn’t test positive for a steroid. ... None of the products I took was on (the NFL’s) banned list." Like Brian Cushing's positive test, McRath's occurred early last season. He has dropped his appeal and promises to "keep on trucking."

NFL suspended Titans LB Gerald McRath four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

A fourth-round pick last year, McRath showed starting-caliber ability in extensive rookie season action in place of injured OLBs David Thornton and Keith Bulluck. The ban may prove a big blow to the Titans' defense, as Thornton will probably now be forced back into the starting lineup. He was previously on the roster bubble. McRath is eligible to return in Week 5.

Gerald McRath is "without question" ready to start this season, according to beat writer Jim Wyatt.

David Thornton may be out of a starting job once he returns from shoulder surgery. McRath and free agent signee Will Witherspoon figure to bookend MLB Stephen Tulloch as the Titans go with a youth movement at linebacker this season.
Fri, May 28, 2010 03:13:00 PM

Titans GM Mike Reinfeldt believes second-year LB Gerald McRath can step in as a starter if necessary.

Stephen Tulloch is holding down middle linebacker, but the two outside spots are tenuous. David Thornton, coming off shoulder/pectoral surgery, may not be kept around at $4.3M, and Keith Bulluck (torn ACL) remains unsigned. Recently signed Will Witherspoon is likely to hold down one spot, and McRath is a viable option at the other if the injured veterans fall through.
