A source told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo that Chase Daniel is "not happy" the Eagles plan to start Carson Wentz (ribs) when healthy.
Despite barely playing in the preseason, the Eagles want to go with Wentz once he's recovered from his ribs injury, which could be as soon as Week 1. While we understand Daniel's frustration, he did nothing to help himself in August by turning in poor preseason performance after poor preseason performance. A career backup, Daniel will resume his usual role when Wentz gets back. Sat, Sep 3, 2016 01:02:00 PM

Following the trade of Sam Bradford, Chase Daniel is set to open the season as the Eagles' starter.

Even though Daniel will likely be under center Week 1, he is just keeping the spot warm for No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz. Daniel has made two career starts, both with the Chiefs, completing a total of 50 passes for 464 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in his six-year career. Even in a great matchup against the Browns Week 1, he will not be worth using in season-long. He could be an interesting near-minimum-price option in DFS.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson confirms Chase Daniel has been signed as a backup.

"Chase Daniel is coming in as a backup, as a No. 2," were Pederson's exact words. The media has been frothing at the mouth to create a quarterback competition since Daniel was made the league's highest-paid backup, but Bradford's contract is even more ridiculous. He'll be the clear-cut starter through camp and the early part of the season. That being said, the Eagles are clearly comfortable handing over the controls to Daniel if Bradford falters or gets injured. Bradford has extensive history with both faltering and getting hurt.

FOX Sports' Mike Garafolo calls Chase Daniel's contract with the Eagles a "backup/maybe starter deal."

Daniel signed a three-year deal that has a base value of $21 million, and could be worth up to $36 million through incentives. It makes him -- by far -- the highest paid "backup" quarterback in football, and perhaps sets up Daniel to get a legitimate chance to unseat the always-shaky Bradford in training camp. Daniel's contract contains $12 million guaranteed. Although Bradford has superior physical skills, Daniel has experience in new Eagles coach Doug Pederson's offense, and Garafolo reports Pederson "loves" Daniel. This will be a battle worth monitoring all spring and summer.

Eagles agreed to terms with QB Chase Daniel, formerly of the Chiefs, on a three-year, $21 million contract with $12 million guaranteed.

Daniel was near the top of a typically thin quarterback market, but has had to settle for a clear No. 2 job instead of a competition elsewhere. It's still not a bad landing spot. Daniel is reuniting with ex-Chiefs OC Doug Pederson and will be backing up one of the league's shakiest and most injury prone starters in Sam Bradford. Daniel will probably make starts at some point during his deal. Daniel's addition means Mark Sanchez will be released. It's worth noting that Daniel's deal is longer than Bradford's.

ESPN's Dianna Marie Russini reports the Eagles are the "favorite" for free agent Chase Daniel, but that three teams are "heavily involved."

Daniel is easily one of the 3-4 best quarterbacks available, but would remain a backup in Philadelphia. Of course, considering Sam Bradford's history of injury (and ineffectiveness), the Eagles are surely willing to pay Daniel a top No. 2 rate. Daniel could have to end up choosing between money and a quarterback competition elsewhere.

FOX Sports' Mike Garafolo reports free agent Chase Daniel remains a possibility in Philadelphia.

It's highly unlikely after the Eagles re-signed Sam Bradford. Daniel will only end up in Philadelphia as a backup if he's greeted by a frigid market. It's possible, but unlikely in a league so starved for quarterback talent. Daniel should get the opportunity to at least be a part of a competition elsewhere.

Chiefs GM John Dorsey says he can only retain free agent Chase Daniel "at the right price."

Dorsey acknowledges Daniel will be walking if "someone throws starter money at him." With so many teams in desperate need of a quarterback, Daniel should at least get the opportunity to win a competition. He'll likely be moving on from Kansas City.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson believes free agent Chase Daniel can be a starter.

Pederson coordinated Daniel the last three seasons in Kansas City. It's the second time he's referred to him as more than a backup. With Sam Bradford's Eagles future up in the air, it's possible Daniel lands in Philly as a stopgap. Daniel has played behind Drew Brees and Alex Smith the last seven years, but has impressed in preseason/spot duty.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports new Eagles coach Doug Pederson believes impending free agent QB Chase Daniel is "more than a backup."

The links between Daniel and the Eagles have been flying since Pederson left Kansas City. A career backup who has split six seasons between the Saints and Chiefs, Daniel has played well both in the preseason and in spot starts under Andy Reid. With Pederson certain to run a similar system in Philadelphia, bringing in Daniel as a cheaper alternative to Sam Bradford makes a lot of sense. It would not be surprising if Daniel opens 2016 as the starter in Philadelphia.

Chase Daniel completed 16-of-27 passes for 291 yards in Sunday's Week 17 win over the Chargers.

Daniel completed his first nine passes and had a touchdown overturned on a Dwayne Bowe fumble. He wasn't asked to do much, but managed the game effectively. Daniel is under contract for $3.75 million next season and is no lock to return as Alex Smith's backup.

Chase Daniel will be the Chiefs' starting quarterback in Week 17 against the Chargers.

A former UDFA out of Missouri, Daniel is a limited-talent backup but arguably a good system fit for Andy Reid's offense. He is an accurate passer capable of completing a high percentage of throws even if he won't stretch the field. This preseason, Daniel went 15-of-21 passing (71.4 percent) for 195 yards with a touchdown and an interception, adding three rushes for 20 yards. Daniel was also more than serviceable in a Week 17 spot start against the Chargers last year. Evan Silva has more on Daniel's DFS outlook at the link below.

The Kansas City Star suggests Chiefs backup QBs Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray are competing for one roster spot.

According to beat writer Terez Paylor, rookie Aaron Murray is "likely a lock" behind starter Alex Smith. Daniel is due a $2.35 million base salary and could be one-and-done in Kansas City after signing a three-year, $10 million contract last offseason. Bray has a rocket arm and prototypical size, but will have to take the next step in his development as a sophomore to unseat Daniel as the No. 2.

The Chiefs can save $1.4 million by releasing Chase Daniel.

Daniel is due a $2.35 million base salary next year and isn't a lock to beat out Tyler Bray as Alex Smith's backup. He signed a three-year, $10 million contract last March and could be cut after just one season with the Chiefs.

Chase Daniel completed 21-of-30 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown in the Chiefs' Week 17 loss to San Diego.

He added seven scrambles for 59 yards. Daniel got the start with Kansas City resting Alex Smith et al, and served in a dumbed-down game manager role, showing accurate short-passing ability and scrambling chops. Long a favorite of Andy Reid, Daniel signed a three-year, $10 million contract in the offseason to back up Smith. He'll resume that role in the first round of the NFL playoffs.
