Former 49ers RB Glen Coffee said he has no regrets about his early retirement.
Coffee surprisingly hung up the cleats prior to his second NFL season in 2010. He did briefly return to the game a year later as a part of a Florida semi-pro team, but he hasn't tried to get back in the NFL. Coffee enlisted in the Army on Feb. 4 and wants to become a member of the elite Special Forces. Tue, Jun 25, 2013 08:40:00 AM

Although former 49ers RB Glen Coffee still wants to play football at the recreational level, he believes the NFL "ruins lives."

"Because what happens is they see that as success," says Coffee. "And money throughout your life has nothing to with your salvation in Christ. A lot of players get that money. And they chase that money ... they're really missing the true meaning of life." Asked if he would return to the NFL one day, Coffee responded, "I never say never ... If the Lord should say that I should return one day, then I'll return. But as of right now, I don't see that happening."

Former 49ers RB Glen Coffee is playing football on the semi-pro circuit with the Northwest Florida Falcons.

Coffee would be a perfect fit for the UFL, if he's serious about resurrecting his career. He shockingly announced his retirement in the middle of 49ers camp in 2010. "A lot of people think that because I quit, I don’t like football or I have something against it," he said. "It’s not like that. As a recreational sport, I still dig it. It’s just not what I wanted to do with my life." A concealed weapon charge against Coffee was dropped last October.

The charge for possession of a concealed firearm against former 49ers RB Glen Coffee has been dropped.

It's not against the law in Florida to possess a concealed firearm as long as it's "securely encased." Coffee was found to be in compliance with the law.

Former 49ers RB Glen Coffee was reportedly arrested Friday morning for possession of a concealed firearm.

The 2009 third-rounder retired from football in August, citing Christ's calling to walk away. We're not sure where the firearm fits into that picture.

Former 49ers RB Glen Coffee has formally filed his retirement papers with the NFL.

The papers were submitted on Monday morning. Coffee averaged just 2.7 yards per carry in his lone NFL season, but his outlook had improved after a dedicated offseason that saw him add some 15 pounds of muscle. Ultimately, he decided devoting his life to the church was more important.

When asked whether or not he would return to football down the road, RB Glen Coffee responded, "No, man. I've already told Christ it's time to go. I've already rung the bell. That's not going to happen."

Coffee also said that he wants to return to the University of Alabama and earn his undergraduate degree and masters. Coffee seems to have been planning this for a while, he just overlooked the execution, something he says he regrets. "I really am sorry that I put the 49ers in this situation. I should have handled it a lot differently."

Glen Coffee has yet to formally file his retirement papers with the NFL, according to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.

La Canfora reports that "some are skeptical about (Coffee) following through" on his retirement plan, though Mike Singletary doesn't expect him back this year. "(The) reason why is more of (Coffee's) character than as a football player," said the coach Friday. "He's an exceptional young man."

Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald, who covered Glen Coffee at Alabama, believes Coffee is retiring to pursue the priesthood.

"Having covered 49ers RB Glen Coffee for 3 years, not surprised he retired," tweeted Rapoport on Friday. "He has a higher call. Wouldn't shock me if he headed to ministry." The 49ers retain Coffee's rights, but it sounds like his retirement is for good. He'll remain under contract through 2012.

49ers backup RB Glen Coffee shockingly announced his retirement from football Friday.

Coffee was nowhere to be found Friday after missing Thursday afternoon's practice. He released a statement Friday afternoon, indicating that he's "moving on" from football. Coach Mike Singletary runs a notoriously tough camp, but there has to be more to the story here. Coffee was thought to be battling rookie Anthony Dixon for the No. 2 job behind Frank Gore, though Singletary says Dixon is still "a ways away." Michael Robinson could enter the season as the primary backup instead.

49ers backup RB Glen Coffee has yet to stand out in training camp practices.

He didn't stand out as a fill-in for Frank Gore last season, either. There's no indication that sixth-rounder Anthony Dixon has passed Coffee on the depth chart, and neither back seems ready to eat into Gore's production this year.

The Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows does not believe rookie Anthony Dixon will unseat Glen Coffee for the primary backup job this summer.

"At least not at the start of the season," said Barrows. Coffee is already adept at blitz pickup, so he'll have a sizable advantage on the No. 2 job in training camp. Though Frank Gore doesn't have an ideal handcuff this year, Coffee is a better use of a late-round fantasy pick than Dixon.

Glen Coffee, who played last season between 205 and 210 pounds, plans to bulk up to 225 pounds this season.

We're not sure exactly why Coffee is doing this after he lacked quickness as a rookie. The Niners drafted 240-pound bruiser Anthony Dixon in April, and Coffee isn't going to out-power the rookie. Frank Gore won't be given many plays off once again this season.

49ers backup RB Glen Coffee has bulked up to 218 pounds after playing at 210 last year.

Though Coffee feels comfortable with the added weight, it's not going to help his explosiveness. After impressing as a mad slasher in preseason action, he was lacking in short-area quickness while filling in for Frank Gore in Weeks 3-5. Coffee is a pure backup as opposed to a complement.

Beat writer Matt Barrows believes the 49ers could be looking for a running back to "complement the between-the-tackles running style of Frank Gore" this offseason.

2009 third-rounder Glen Coffee was a disappointment as Gore's replacement in Weeks 3-5, but it's too soon to give up on him after his strong preseason showing. If the Niners draft a tailback, it won't be until the later rounds.
