Free agent LB Aaron Maybin has retired from football.
Maybin was most recently with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. The 26-year-old No. 11 overall pick of the Bills in 2009 was most recently in the NFL with the Jets back in 2012. He had six sacks in 13 games for Gang Green in 2011, but they were the only quarterback takedowns of Maybin's 48-game career. Maybin was an explosive athlete, but never seemed to fully "buy in" as an NFL player. He was consistently underweight and failed despite opportunities to play for some of the best defensive coaches in football, from Mike Zimmer to Rex Ryan. Tue, May 13, 2014 03:14:00 PM

The Giants worked out free agent LB Aaron Maybin.

Fellow free agent linebackers Tavares Gooden and Emmanuel Acho were also part of the workout. Maybin, the former No. 11 overall pick, couldn't even make it to final cuts with the Bengals. Acho was signed to the Giants' practice squad.

Bengals released LB Aaron Maybin, WR Tyrone Goard, and CB Troy Stoudemire.

25-year-old Maybin has now been cut by three NFL teams. He showed very little in Bengals camp and has established himself as an NFL draft megabust.

Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com suggests Aaron Maybin is one of seven players competing for two spots in the LB corps.

Hobson lists Vontaze Burfict, James Harrison, Emmanuel Lamur and Rey Maualuga as locks to make the roster. Moreover, the Bengals drafted LB Sean Porter in the fourth round. The Bengals, who are fond of collecting first-round talent, are Maybin's third NFL team. He flashed some ability with the Jets, earning a first-round RFA tender in 2012, but he couldn't sustain that momentum. He'll have to show pass-rush ability and special-teams skill to make the roster.

ESPN.com considers Aaron Maybin a candidate to start at strong-side linebacker.

The Bengals are hoping to find a role for Maybin as a strong-side pass rusher after losing Manny Lawson and Thomas Howard. Considering he's been a complete bust to this point, Maybin isn't even guaranteed a roster spot, but he should enter training camp with a chance to compete for a starting job. Maybin will face competition from Dontay Moch and 2012 UDFA Emmanuel Lamur.

The Bengals will try Aaron Maybin at strong-side linebacker.

Maybin has been a 3-4 outside linebacker in previous stops. The Bengals believe he's worth a look as a stand-up 4-3 "SAM" who can rush with his hand in the dirt on nickel downs. DC Mike Zimmer has had a lot of success with reclamation projects like Maybin, from Dhani Jones to Thomas Howard to Vontaze Burfict.

Bengals signed OLB/DE Aaron Maybin to a reserve/future contract.

Maybin was cut by the Jets in mid-November after registering just one tackle in eight games. The Bengals and Maybin hope he can recapture 2011 form when he led the Jets with six sacks.

The Seahawks worked out free agent OLB/DE Aaron Maybin before signing DE Patrick Chukwurah on Tuesday.

It's Maybin's first known workout since being cut by the Jets in November. He registered six sacks with New York in 2011 but managed just one tackle in eight games in 2012. Being passed over for a guy that hadn't played in a game since 2008, Maybin's NFL future is cloudy.

Jets waived OLB Aaron Maybin.

Maybin appeared to get his career back on track as the team's most effective per-play pass rusher in 2011, but he had just two QB hits and zero sacks this season. The No. 9 overall pick in the 2009 draft managed just one tackle on 120 snaps through eight games.

Jets declared LB Aaron Maybin, QB Greg McElroy, RB Joe McKnight, OL Caleb Schlauderaff, OG Hayworth Hicks, TE Hayden Smith, and DT Kenrick Ellis inactive for Week 10 against the Seahawks.

Maybin led the team in 2011 sacks, but has none this season. The Jets activated Ricky Sapp from the practice squad this week and are trying to give him a shot to rush the passer. Ellis' absence will be tough to overcome against Seattle's rushing attack.

Jets coach Rex Ryan believes OLB Aaron Maybin is ready to take on a bigger role.

"I don’t think there’s any doubt," Ryan said Friday of the Jets' 2011 sacks leader. Maybin was limited to situational pass-rushing duties last season, but estimates he's been added to "eight or nine more defensive packages" in camp. He's also up to 245 pounds after reporting to camp at 228 last season and playing at 240. Maybin's "bust" label is fading further into the past.

Jets coach Rex Ryan says he expects OLB Aaron Maybin is "just scratching the surface" and can have a "big year for us."

The Jets desperately need an edge rusher to put heat on quarterbacks in their new 46 defense. "I expect him to have a big year rushing the passer," Ryan said, citing Maybin's improved knowledge of the scheme. Signed in training camp after the Bills cut him a year ago, Maybin notched six sacks and four forced fumbles in 11 appearances off the bench. He's competing to be a starter in 2012.

Already eight pounds heavier, Jets OLB Aaron Maybin says he's looking to add even more weight to his 240-pound frame.

Maybin is trying to lock down a role in the team's base package. He's penciled in currently as the Jets' No. 3 outside linebacker, but projected starter Bryan Thomas is recovering from a torn Achilles'. While Thomas is an established veteran, we wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Maybin beat him out in camp.

Jets OLB Aaron Maybin disclosed that he's gained eight pounds and currently weighs in at 241.

Maybin often struggled to keep weight on as a Bill. He intends to play closer to 250 during the regular season, but this is a good start. The Jets did not emerge from the draft with an edge-rushing outside linebacker, so Maybin should be given a legitimate shot on the weak side, across from LOLB Calvin Pace.

Jets OLB Aaron Maybin is hoping to weigh in between 240-250 pounds this season.

Maybin's inability to keep weight on was the root of his undoing in Buffalo. He says he's already added six pounds since the beginning of Jets OTAs, and thinks he could be more than a passing-down specialist if he keeps his weight up. "I’m just trying to make sure that through this offseason, our coaching staff sees exactly what I see," Maybin said. "And that they’re confident putting me out there on first and second down."
