Vikings CB Asher Allen has retired from football.
Coach Leslie Frazier made the announcement after Wednesday's OTA practice. Frazier insisted the retirement wasn't medical-related, but it's worth noting that Allen suffered a concussion late last season and another in November of 2010. A third-round pick out of Georgia in 2009, Allen's career ends after just three seasons and 21 career starts. He recorded four career interceptions. Wed, May 30, 2012 02:05:00 PM

Vikings declared CB Asher Allen, CB Chris Cook, LB Xavier Adibi, OL DeMarcus Love, OL Steve Hutchinson, TE Allen Reisner and DE D'Aundre Reed inactive for Week 16 against the Redskins.

Marcus Sherels replaces Allen in the slot. Cook is still on indefinite leave from the Vikings with pay. Both Allen and Hutchinson suffered concussions in last week’s loss to the Saints and failed to pass medical clearance.

The Vikings have ruled out CB Asher Allen (concussion) for Week 16.

Minnesota was roasted for 400-plus yards and five TD passes by Drew Brees last week, and the Redskins' passing game is set up for success this time around. Santana Moss can be viewed as a borderline WR2, and Jabar Gaffney a serviceable WR3. Rex Grossman is a recommended play in two-QB leagues.

Vikings CB Asher Allen is done for the remainder of Sunday's game against the Saints with concussion symptoms.

Minnesota entered the week without Antoine Winfield and Chris Cook. Allen is the team's third best cornerback. They'll have to turn back to practice squad-type Marcus Sherels and rookie Brandon Burton in the base defense.

Vikings CB Asher Allen left Sunday's game in the first half with a shoulder injury.

With Antoine Winfield and Chris Cook already out, the Vikes are getting dangerously thin at cornerback. Street free agent Benny Sapp and return specialist Marcus Sherrels got mixed up on a touchdown to Roddy White shortly after Allen's injury.

Vikings declared CB Asher Allen, CB Brandon Burton, S Mistral Raymond, C Brandon Fusco, OT DeMarcus Love, DE D'Aundre Reed and LB Xavier Adibi inactive for Week 1 against the Chargers.

Allen was limited all week with a toe injury. Marcus Sherels is active as the fourth cornerback.

Vikings CB Asher Allen left Tuesday night's game with a hip injury.

Nickel back Frank Walker is now playing every down opposite Antoine Winfield. Allen is considered questionable to return.

Vikings CB Asher Allen (concussion) has resumed practicing this week.

Coach Brad Childress isn't saying whether Allen will regain his starting job or be moved back to the nickel role. Allen has played better than Chris Cook this year, but the Vikes' like the rookie's athleticism and physicality.

Asher Allen (concussion) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bears.

Rookie Chris Cook draws the start and is a major downgrade. Look for Jay Cutler to avoid Antoine Winfield and attack Cook. Other Vikings inactives: Third QB Joe Webb, RB Albert Young, G Chris DeGeare, DT Jimmy Kennedy, LB Erin Henderson and S Jamarca Sanford.

Asher Allen has won the job as the Vikings' nickel/slot cornerback.

Antoine Winfield will stay at left corner, with a slew of candidates competing on the opposite end. Allen is a feisty DB with quickness, making him a force in the slot. Minnesota's secondary figures to be most susceptible to the deep ball to the outside until RCB Cedric Griffin (knee) gets healthy.

Asher Allen, not Lito Sheppard, is listed as the starting right cornerback on the Vikings' first depth chart of camp.

Rookie Chris Cook is presumably listed behind Antoine Winfield at left corner. Allen has been seeing a lot of time as the nickel corner in practice, with Sheppard relegated to second-team work. The starting battle will likely come down to Asher vs. Cook.

Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier raved about CB Asher Allen's performance so far this offseason.

With Cedric Griffin (torn ACL) unlikely to be ready for Week 1, Allen is going to play a major role in the Vikings' secondary. He's going to compete with Lito Sheppard to start opposite Antoine Winfield and will also see time inside in nickel sets.

Vikings signed third-round CB Asher Allen to a four-year contract.

Allen was a surprise early entrant after his junior season at Georgia. He's also coming off arthroscopic knee surgery and looks unlikely to play a big first-year role behind Antoine Winfield, Cedric Griffin, and Karl Paymah.

Vikings third-round CB Asher Allen recently underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee.

As it was just a scope, the former Georgia Bulldog is expected to be ready to participate in training camp.

Vikings selected Georgia CB Asher Allen with the No. 86 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

Allen needed another year at UG, but he was ranked as high as the fifth best corner on some analysts' boards. It's hard to like his production -- Allen didn't even have a pick in 2008 -- but he's a corner with a high ceiling. The Vikes can use nickel help behind Antoine Winfield and Cedric Griffin.
