Bills signed DL Jarron Gilbert off the Jets' practice squad.
Gilbert looks great getting off the bus (and jumping out of pools), but he's been an ineffective pro. The Bills will give him a look-see down the stretch. Fri, Dec 16, 2011 04:52:00 PM

The Jets are experimenting with practice squad DL Jarron Gilbert at tight end.

With Jeff Cumberland (Achilles) done for the year, the Jets are looking for a blocking, No. 3 tight end. Gilbert was recruited out of high school as a tight end before being converted to the defensive line.

Jets waived or released DT Jarron Gilbert, DL Lorenzo Washingon, LB Matt Berning, LB Eddie Jones, LB Joey LaRocque, S Byron Landor, CB Ellis Lankster, CB Julian Posey and DB Tracy Wilson.

Gilbert was active for one game last season, notching a single tackle. One player who was not cut was LB Aaron Maybin, though ESPN New York's Rich Cimini reports "he's hardly a lock to be around for the season opener."

Jets signed DL Jarron Gilbert from their practice squad.

Gilbert was on the Jets' 53-man roster for a few games earlier this season but wasn't active. He's not sure bet to be active this time around, either. He'll replace WR Patrick Turner, who replaced Gilbert a few weeks ago, on the roster.

Jets waived DL Jarron Gilbert.

The pool-jumper loses his roster spot to WR Patrick Turner, who is being promoted from the practice squad.

Jets signed DL Jarron Gilbert from their practice squad.

The pool-jumper has loads of athleticism for a man his size, but it remains to be seen if he'll be able to translate it into on-field success. At this point, we're not optimistic.

Updating a previous item, DL Jarron Gilbert has not been awarded to the Jets on waivers.

The Jets pulled back their waiver claim when they were awarded Marcus Dixon from the Cowboys. Gilbert has cleared waivers and is now a free agent.

Jets claimed DE Jarron Gilbert off waivers from the Bears.

Rex Ryan's staff will attempt to "coach up" the 2009 No. 68 overall pick. Gilbert has not looked remotely like a player since entering the league two Aprils ago, however. He's likely ticketed for the game-day inactives list.

Bears waived DL Jarron Gilbert.

Gilbert can jump out of a pool in a single bound, but just isn't any good at football (we know, we've watched him). The former third-round pick will get a chance elsewhere, but if Rod Marinelli can't motivate you, no one can.

Bears DL Jarron Gilbert and Henry Melton are both expected to "come under scrutiny when it's time for final roster cuts."

We know Gilbert can jump out of a swimming pool, but there are serious doubts about his ability to play football at the NFL level. Bears GM Jerry Angelo, squarely on the hot seat this year, picked up the defensive linemen with the two picks acquired after trading down from the 49th spot last year. They remain buried on the depth chart.

Bears coach Lovie Smith confirmed that Jarron Gilbert will focus on defensive tackle going forward.

Gilbert is athletic enough to play left end, but lacks the necessary quicks to be a true edge rusher in the Tampa 2. Last year's No. 68 overall pick, Gilbert is buried behind Tommie Harris, Marcus Harrison, and Anthony Adams.

Bears signed third-round DL Jarron Gilbert to a four-year contract with a $740,000 signing bonus.

Gilbert inexplicably fell into Chicago's lap at 68th overall in the draft after leading D-I in tackles for a loss last season. He'll likely play the "three technique" tackle position behind Tommie Harris in his first year.

Bears selected San Jose State DL Jarron Gilbert with the No. 68 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Finally, the Bears make a pick. Something of a boom or bust talent, Gilbert was a YouTube sensation for being able to jump out of a pool from an underwater start. He led NCAA in tackles for loss as a senior, so it isn't like he lacked production to back up the hype. Other than Tommie Harris the Bears haven't had an effective interior pass rusher in a while, so shooting high makes sense. GM Jerry Angelo interestingly pictures Gilbert as a three-technique under tackle, which is Harris' position.

San Jose State DL Jarron Gilbert is "rising on many draft boards," according to Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post.

Lombardi thinks Gilbert could crack the first round. Gilbert can play end in a 3-4 or tackle in a 4-3. It's hard to imagine him not going in the top 32.

San Jose State DL Jarron Gilbert ran an unofficial forty time of 4.81 at the Scouting Combine Monday.

Gilbert, of YouTube/swimming pool fame, is 6'6/287. The forty time is insanely good. Gilbert entered the offseason as a projected third-round pick, but his stock is soaring. He's a legitimate first-round prospect now.
