Dolphins MLB Rey Maualuga (hamstring) expects to make his season debut against the Titans in Week 5.
Maualuga has been slow to recover from a hamstring injury but has practiced all week and expects to finally make his Dolphins debut in Week 5. He earned PFF's No. 55 grade out of 59 qualifiers at inside linebacker last year and was one of the league's worst run defenders. Oct 5 - 3:40 PM

Dolphins MLB Rey Maualuga (hamstring) is inactive for Week 4 against the Saints.

Signed just before the season to help a thin linebacker corps, Maualuga has yet to suit up for the Dolphins. He did at least look close to giving it a go this week. On the bright side, Kiko Alonso (shoulder) is active and Lawrence Timmons is back in the starting lineup. Miami declared CB Byron Maxwell (hamstring), DT Jordan Phillips (ankle), OT Eric Smith (knee), OG Isaac Asiata (ankle), CB Torry McTyer, and OT Sam Young inactive for Week 4.
Oct 1 - 8:16 AM

Dolphins MLB Rey Maualuga (hamstring) returned to practice Wednesday.

Maualuga has been out of shape since signing with the Dolphins just before the season, but coach Adam Gase said his conditioning is better. The hamstring is the only issue now. Miami is getting back SLB Lawrence Timmons this week.
Sep 27 - 12:11 PM

The Dolphins declared CB Cordrea Tankersley, CB Torry McTyer, LB Rey Maualuga, G Isaac Asiata, OT Eric Smith, OT Sam Young and DT Jordan Phillips inactive for Week 3 against the Jets.

Maualuga has been out of shape and the Dolphins will be a little shorthanded at linebacker with Lawrence Timmons suspended again.
Sep 24 - 11:38 AM

Dolphins MLB Rey Maualuga (hamstring) has been ruled out for Week 1.

It's probably not a surprise after Maualuga showed up to Dolphins camp severely out of shape after signing less than a month ago. It appears the team will turn to second-year UDFA Mike Hull. Miami has a run defense to attack.
Sep 15 - 4:57 PM

Dolphins MLB Rey Maualuga took part in team drills during Monday's practice.

Maualuga has been working to get into game shape, and he thinks he is getting close. "Slowly but surely, I’m getting there," he said. "We Samoans tend to be big boned. I feel good. I’m preparing as if I’m going to play [Week 1]." He should start between Kiko Alonso and Lawrence Timmons when the Dolphins open their season.
Sep 5 - 9:24 AM

Dolphins MLB Rey Maualuga is taking part in team drills during Monday's practice.

Signed earlier this month, there had been concern Maualuga would not be ready for Week 1, but this practice suggests he is getting close to game shape. Maualuga is expected to start at middle linebacker when he is ready.
Aug 28 - 10:23 AM

The Palm Beach Post reports Dolphins MLB Rey Maualuga may not be ready for the season opener.

Maualuga signed last week, but hasn't practiced since reporting to training camp overweight. It sounds like he's not close to game ready. Miami would be forced to start Mike Hull if Maualuga isn't in shape before Week 1.
Aug 26 - 3:20 PM

New Dolphins MLB Rey Maualuga needs to lose weight before he practices with the team.

Maualuga is in the 260s, and the Dolphins want him to lose around 10 pounds. He has two-plus weeks to get ready for Week 1. The 30-year-old is expected to be the Dolphins' starting middle linebacker this season.
Aug 23 - 12:00 PM

The Miami Herald expects MLB Rey Maualuga to be the Week 1 starter.

Maualuga has been out of the league since March, but knows DC Matt Burke's scheme from their Cincy overlap. The Dolphins view Maualuga as an early-down upgrade on Mike Hull. Maualuga gives Miami a run stopper, but shouldn't play more than 30 snaps per game.
Aug 19 - 6:39 PM

Dolphins signed MLB Rey Maualuga to a one-year, $900,000 contract.

The Dolphins need linebacker help after second-round MLB Raekwon McMillan tore his ACL in the preseason opener. As of now, Mike Hull is lightly penciled in as the starting MIKE, but he's a third-year UDFA who has played just 132 career snaps. Maualuga doesn't have a whole lot left in the tank, but he knows the defense after playing for DC Matt Burke in Cincinnati.
Aug 19 - 1:37 PM

Free agent ILB Rey Maualuga is working out for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins have a huge hole in the middle after losing second-rounder Raekwon McMillan to a torn ACL. Right now, "Mike Hull" is in line to be the Week 1 starter. A longtime Bengal, Maualuga was released in March. This is his first-known visit. Maualuga hasn't been effective in a while, but would probably be the favorite to start over Hull.
Aug 15 - 4:20 PM

The Palm Beach Post considers free agent MLB Rey Maualuga a potential fit for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins have a need at middle linebacker after losing Raekwon McMillan to knee surgery. Entering his age-30 season, Maualuga faded into a part-time role with the Bengals last year but could give Miami an upgrade over special teamer Mike Hull as McMillan's replacement. Maualuga should only require a non-guaranteed deal.
Aug 12 - 3:36 PM

Free agent ILB Rey Maualuga will visit the Chiefs on Thursday.

Maualuga was cut by the Bengals on Saturday. Kansas City will be his first-known visit. Now on the wrong side of 30, Maualuga would be a run stopper for a team with little depth behind rehabbing Derrick Johnson (Achilles').
Mar 28 - 5:03 PM

Bengals released MLB Rey Maualuga.

The writing was on the wall after the Bengals signed Kevin Minter. Maualuga was a seven-year starter in Cincy, but injuries and ineffectiveness reduced him to a part-time role (326 snaps) in 2016. His release saves $3.75 million against the cap. Entering his age-30 season, Maualuga should resurface closer to the veteran minimum.
