Giants waived OL Herman Johnson.
The reason given was, "Left squad." The 6'7/360 Johnson has been let go twice in the past week. It's good bet that he arrived to camp out of shape. Tue, Aug 2, 2011 08:57:00 PM

Giants claimed OL Herman Johnson off waivers from the Bears.

Johnson worked mostly at guard with the Cardinals, and the Bears tried to develop him at tackle. Offensive-line coach Pat Flaherty will be charged with tutoring the mammoth former LSU star.

Bears waived OL Herman Johnson.

A fifth-round pick of the Cardinals in 2009, struggles with weight have prevented Johnson from ever playing an NFL down. There's little reason to believe he'll do so this season.

The Bears will play new OL Herman Johnson at tackle.

Johnson worked mostly at guard with the Cardinals, but the Bears would like some insurance behind right tackle J'Marcus Webb, a rookie seventh-round pick. Appropriately nicknamed "House," Johnson is a 6-7, 360-pounder.

Bears signed OL Herman Johnson off the Cardinals' practice squad.

Not a bad gamble for a team in desperate need of talent and youth up front. Johnson has seen time at both guard and tackle in Cardinals practices. Expected to be groomed for a starting job in 2011, the behemoth (6'7/360) Johnson didn't give himself a realistic shot to make the final roster when he showed up to training camp overweight in August.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt revealed that 2009 fifth-round pick Herman Johnson showed up to camp overweight.

"My expectations are that he lose weight," said Whiz. "If he does that, he has a chance. If he doesn’t, he’s going to have a hard time playing for us."

Herman Johnson is believed to be one more year away from contending for a starting job on the Cardinals offensive line.

The behemoth 6'7", 360-pound Johnson was a guard at LSU, but the Cardinals have been giving him plenty of practice at right tackle. He'll likely swing between guard and tackle this year, with a shot to take over one of the spots in 2011.

Cardinals signed fifth-round OL Herman Johnson to a three-year contract.

Arizona is trying Johnson behind RT Levi Brown because of his massive dimensions, but he's more likely to end up as a versatile tackle/guard backup in the long run. Johnson will likely struggle to dress on game days this year.

Cardinals rookie Herman Johnson worked at right tackle during the team's minicamp this weekend.

Johnson, at 6'7/350+, could project outside eventually if he continues to shed weight. He's a better bet a guard -- his college position -- at the moment. Johnson is currently third on the depth chart at right tackle.

Cardinals selected LSU OL Herman Johnson with the No. 167 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

Clearly, teams didn't think Johnson was a tackle tackle. A guard at LSU, Johnson shed weight all winter and spring to get down to 6'7/356 by Pro Day, but it wasn't enough. Perhaps if he drops some more weight Russ Grimm will give him a look at right tackle with Levi Brown moving to the blind side, but Johnson needs to spend time on the bike and bench first.

LSU OL Herman Johnson measured in at 6'7/356 at the Tigers' Pro Day.

Johnson has shed nearly 30 pounds since January's Senior Bowl in an effort to show teams he's agile enough to play right tackle. A left guard in college, Johnson projects as a late second- to mid third-round pick.

LSU OL Herman Johnson measured 6'7 1/4 and 364 pounds at Thursday's weigh-in at the NFL Combine.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reported that Johnson's lost 30 lbs since the college season ended. That means Johnson played at 400+ in the Tigers' Chick-Fil-A Bowl win over Georgia Tech. He was 382 at the Senior Bowl.

LSU OL Herman Johnson has reportedly lost 30 pounds since the end of the college season.

Johnson, who measured 6'7/382 at the Senior Bowl, struggled there when asked to pass protect in practices. The college guard realizes that tackle is a more valuable position and is likely hoping the weight loss helps his agility.

LSU OL Herman Johnson measured 6'7/382 at the Senior Bowl weigh-in.

Jeff Otah is apparently a poor man's Herman Johnson. The fifth-year senior was not dinged for looking too soft in the body, which is amazing. Johnson will likely convert to right tackle in the pros after playing left guard at LSU.
