Bucs coach Lovie Smith said WR Louis Murphy "has a role for us."
Murphy reeled in all four of his targets for 54 yards in the preseason opener. "We’ve gotten consistent play like that from Louis throughout," Smith said. "He’s been a valuable guy for us, a guy that we really could depend on." Murphy gave up some of his cushion on Kenny Bell and Robert Herron by missing the first 11 training camp practices with an ankle injury, but he is still expected to open the season as the No. 3 receiver. Bucs WR Louis Murphy missed the first 11 training camp practices with an ankle injury.

He made his camp debut on Wednesday. Signed to a three-year contract extension through 2017 in December, Murphy figured to have the edge for No. 3 receiver duties, but rookies Kenny Bell and Rannell Hall and last year's sixth-rounder Robert Herron have emerged as true competition for Murphy.

Buccaneers signed WR Louis Murphy to a three-year contract extension through 2017.

Murphy was set to become a free agent in March. In his first season with Tampa Bay, he caught 31 balls for 380 yards and two touchdowns behind Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson before being placed on I.R. with an ankle injury. It must not be very serious. With Jackson's future up in the air with the Bucs, Murphy could potentially see an increased offensive role opposite Evans in 2015.

Bucs placed WR Louis Murphy on injured reserve with an ankle injury, ending his season.

The severity of Murphy's injury is unknown, but even a minor ailment would land him on I.R. with only two games remaining. Signed off the street in September after being cut loose following training camp, Murphy went on to be reasonably productive as the Bucs' No. 3 receiver, posting a 31/380/2 line across 11 games. Going on 28, he'll fight for someone's final receiver spot in 2015.

Bucs WR Louis Murphy (ankle) is in a walking boot.

It's not a good sign for Murphy's Week 16 status. The Bucs' No. 3 receiver was held without a catch on Sunday, and has just 31 grabs across 11 games.

Bucs WR Louis Murphy was held catch-less in Week 15.

Murphy wasn't seen much until he dropped a pass over the middle late in the second quarter and got injured. We do not believe he reentered the game.

Louis Murphy managed one catch for seven yards among five targets in the Bucs' Week 13 loss to Cincinnati.

Serving as Tampa Bay's slot receiver, Murphy has been an inconsistent contributor in the Bucs' passing game. He's too unreliable to trust in fantasy.

Louis Murphy caught 6-of-8 targets for 113 yards Week 12 against the Bears.

Murphy got loose for a 54-yard gain late in the first half and had a 22-yard gain in the third quarter. Murphy was peppered with targets after the Bucs abandoned the run in the second half, seeing five of his eight targets in the fourth quarter. Murphy will have big games every now and again, but he is too inconsistent to be used in re-draft leagues.

Louis Murphy secured 2-of-4 targets for 13 yards in Tampa Bay's Week 9 loss to the Browns.

Murphy's production has fallen off a cliff since the Bucs' Week 7 bye. Behind Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans, Murphy has no value in re-draft leagues.

Louis Murphy secured 2-of-2 targets for 11 yards in the Bucs' Week 8 loss to the Vikings.

As the No. 3 receiver in a dysfunctional Tampa passing game, Murphy was never going to sustain his production from the previous three weeks. Murphy's fantasy value would rise some if the Bucs traded Vincent Jackson, but not to the extent that he'd become a reliable WR3. He's only worth owning in 16-team leagues.

Louis Murphy caught seven passes for 72 yards and one touchdown in the Bucs' Week 6 loss to the Ravens.

Murphy finished second on the team behind Vincent Jackson with his nine targets. Mike Evans returned after missing one game with a groin injury. He didn't play every snap, and with the Bucs trailing 38-0 at the half, Murphy got plenty of run in three-wide sets after the break. Murphy isn't going to produce like this on a weekly basis and isn't a preferred own in 12-team leagues.

Louis Murphy caught three passes for 35 yards and one touchdown in the Bucs' Week 5 loss to the Saints.

Murphy was targeted seven times as the No. 2 receiver in place of an injured Mike Evans. He has plenty of chemistry with Mike Glennon, and the two hooked up for a 20-yard score just before halftime. Murphy did a great job of keeping both feet in bounds on the play. He'll run most of his routes against Lardarius Webb and Asa Jackson next week at home against Baltimore, but will be nothing more than a desperation WR4/5 play.

Louis Murphy will start in Week 5 against the Saints.

Murphy had six catches for 99 yards on 11 targets last week and projects for an increased role with Mike Evans sidelined. He's worth a look as a matchup play against a Saints defense that's giving up the fourth-most passing yards, but is nothing more than a desperation WR4/5.

Louis Murphy projects for a increased role with Mike Evans (groin) out 2-3 weeks.

Murphy was with the Bucs in the preseason, catching eight passes for 99 yards on 97 snaps. He briefly lost his roster spot due to a back injury, but was re-signed ahead of Week 4 and came on for a 6-99-0 line on a team-high 11 targets. Now he projects as the No. 2 wideout opposite Vincent Jackson, ahead of special teamer Russell Shepard and rookie slot man Robert Herron. Murphy will be a desperation WR4/5 against the Saints in Week 5.

Louis Murphy caught 6-of-11 targets for 99 yards in Tampa Bay's Week 4 win over the Steelers.

Re-signed off the street five days ago, Murphy inexplicably led the Bucs in receiving. It's not a fluke he should repeat going forward, but Murphy could start opposite Vincent Jackson in Week 5 if Mike Evans (groin) isn't ready to go. Murphy is off the radar in 12-14 team leagues.
