Giants GM Jerry Reese said WR Louis Murphy was signed for his speed.
Murphy, who ran 4.43 at the 2009 Combine, has the look of a situational deep threat. "This guy can take the top off your defense," Reese said. "He gives us a different dimension ... A deep threat that we haven't had. We haven't had a guy who can run like this guy." Murphy will be no better than fifth on the target totem pole behind Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks, Brandon Myers and Rueben Randle. Mar 20 - 9:14 AM

Giants signed WR Louis Murphy, formerly of the Panthers, to a one-year contract.

This is a depth move for the Giants with Domenik Hixon and Ramses Barden both unrestricted free agents. Murphy was a non-factor for the Panthers last season, catching just 25 balls for 336 yards and one touchdown.

Free agent WR Louis Murphy is visiting the Giants Friday.

Always long on potential and short on production, the speedy Murphy managed just 25 catches for 336 yards and one touchdown with the Panthers last season. He'd be viewed as mere depth in New York, where Domenik Hixon and Ramses Barden are unrestricted free agents.
Mar 15 - 7:46 AM

Louis Murphy caught three passes for 57 yards in the Panthers' Week 17 win over the Saints.

Murphy's first season in Carolina following a July trade with the Raiders turned out to be a quiet one. Even when Brandon LaFell was sidelined by turf toe in Weeks 14 and 15, Murphy managed just seven catches for 54 yards and no touchdowns on 15 targets. He'll hit unrestricted free agency with off-field issues from his Raider days and lack of production in Carolina on his resume.

Louis Murphy caught two passes for 18 yards in the Panthers' Week 15 win over the Raiders.

Murphy started over Brandon LaFell (questionable, turf toe) and was targeted six times, but secured just two and is a rotational player in Carolina's offense. Murphy should be on waiver wires for the fantasy title week against Oakland.

Louis Murphy (hamstring, probable) returned to a full practice Friday.

Look for Murphy and Brandon LaFell (toe/foot, questionable) to rotate at Z receiver against the Chargers, assuming LaFell is active. Steve Smith and Greg Olsen are the only realistic fantasy options in Carolina's pass-catching corps.

Louis Murphy (hamstring) returned to a limited practice on Thursday.

He's now on track to start Sunday at San Diego with Brandon LaFell still sitting out. Murphy has topped 50 yards in a game just twice all season.

Louis Murphy missed Wednesday's practice with a hamstring injury.

It's a new injury for Murphy, who started Sunday's win in place of Brandon LaFell. Murphy caught five passes for 36 yards against the Falcons. Injury prone throughout his four-year career, Murphy should be considered questionable at best for Week 15. With LaFell also looking shaky, the Panthers could be forced to start David Gettis or Armanti Edwards opposite Steve Smith against San Diego.

Louis Murphy will start Sunday's game against the Falcons if Brandon LaFell (toe) can't go.

LaFell's turf toe injury is bad enough that he was in a walking boot Tuesday and did not practice Wednesday. Murphy is expected to get the nod. "One of the things he does present is a speed threat," coach Ron Rivera said. "I think if people want to roll towards Steve (Smith), I think with Murph's ability to run, and we saw his ability to catch the deep ball, I think that can be a scary thing." Note that when LaFell missed a Week 9 game in Washington due to a concussion, Murphy managed a 1/4/0 line on two targets. Tight end Greg Olsen projects as a bigger beneficiary of LaFell's absence.

Louis Murphy caught two passes for a season-high 65 yards in Week 12 against the Eagles.

Murphy hauled in both of his targets with his big play being a 55-yard grab in the second half to help set up a Cam Newton rushing score. He has no fantasy relevance as the No. 4 option in the passing game.

Starting in place of Brandon LaFell (concussion), Louis Murphy caught just one pass for four yards versus the Redskins in Week 9.

Murphy's only other target was a shot play that failed to connect. The Panthers passed just 23 times, and only Steve Smith and Greg Olsen saw more than Murphy's two targets. He heads back to the third receiver role if LaFell returns for the Broncos game in Week 10.

Panthers WR Louis Murphy was in walking boot Monday.

Murphy rolled his ankle during Sunday's loss to the Falcons, but said he expects to play in Week 5. The ex-Raider has just five catches for 78 yards on the season as the No. 3 wideout.

Louis Murphy caught three passes for 16 yards with a touchdown in Sunday's preseason game against the Jets.

With Steve Smith (foot infection) sidelined, Murphy drew the start opposite Brandon LaFell. It's a sure sign that he's leading the battle for the No. 3 wideout gig. Through three preseason games, Murphy has seven catches for 87 yards and a score.

Coach Ron Rivera said he expects to fill the No. 3 wideout spot by committee.

David Gettis was the heavy favorite to win the job, but he remains on active/PUP with a severe hamstring injury. That leaves Louis Murphy, Kealoha Pilares and Seyi Ajirotutu to battle for reps. No one in that trio has emerged, leaving No. 2 wideout Brandon LaFell with even more job security.

Louis Murphy has been plagued by drops so far in camp.

Murphy, acquired via trade just before camp opened, is battling Kealoha Pilares and Seyi Ajirotutu for the No. 3 receiver job. David Gettis has missed the entire camp due to a hamstring injury, but should be in the mix shortly. Regardless, the third wideout won't have much upside in this offense as Steve Smith, Greg Olsen, and Brandon LaFell hog targets.
