Newly-signed MLB James Laurinaitis is expected to make the on-field defensive calls for the Saints this season.
Laurinaitis' ability to "quarterback" a defense is a primary reason the Saints signed him. Perhaps a veteran making the calls instead of sophomore Stephone Anthony will help keep New Orleans' undisciplined defense more on task, but Laurinaitis has become a declining liability in the run game. Anthony will switch to the strong side with Laurinaitis occupying the middle. Apr 9 - 9:45 AM

Saints agreed to terms with LB James Laurinaitis, formerly of the Rams.

Although Laurinaitis put up gaudy "tackle" stats in St. Louis, he's long been one of the most overrated players in the league. He finished 59th among 60 qualified inside linebackers in Pro Football Focus' 2015 grades, and dead last against the run. Still only 29 years old, Laurinaitis would be best viewed as veteran depth in New Orleans. The Saints' linebacker corps is weak enough, however, that Laurinaitis will probably be given a legitimate chance to start.

Free agent LB James Laurinaitis has scheduled visits with seven teams.

The news was delivered by Laurinaitis' dad, aka Animal from the Road Warriors of WWE fame. Laurinaitis has already visited the Saints, will visit the Falcons early next week, and also has visits scheduled with the Bears, Redskins, Patriots, 49ers and Giants, although beat reporters for the Giants and Redskins have not heard anything about a visit. A durable veteran, Laurinaitis should be able to latch on somewhere soon.

Free agent MLB James Laurinaitis will visit the Falcons on Monday and Tuesday.

The former Ram met with New Orleans last week. The Falcons need to upgrade on incumbent MLB Paul Worrilow, who is a restricted free agent. Laurinaitis was overpaid and just plain bad last season, but he's still a big name and could benefit from a change of scenery after seven years in St. Louis. The 29-year-old has recorded at least 100 tackles every season since debuting in 2009. He's never missed a game in his career.

Free agent MLB James Laurinaitis' visit to the Saints will take place on Tuesday.

The Saints' reasoning behind interest in Laurinaitis is unclear after they broke in 2015 first-rounder Stephone Anthony at middle linebacker last year. Perhaps Laurinaitis would move to the strong side in Dennis Allen's 4-3 defense, or New Orleans would go back to more 3-4 looks with both Anthony and Laurinaitis inside. As Laurinaitis was released, he can sign quickly if he chooses.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Saints hope to bring in free agent MLB James Laurinaitis for a visit next week.

Rapoport reports the interest is strong for Laurinaitis, who was released by the Rams last week. If true, it is unlikely the veteran signs on his first visit. Laurinaitis has not missed a start since being drafted by the Rams in the second round of the 2009 draft, but he has been a liability the last several seasons. Unless he is willing to take a cut-rate deal, the cap-strapped Saints should look elsewhere.

Rams released MLB James Laurinaitis.

It's a sad but necessary end to Laurinaitis' seven-year tenure with the Rams. The 29-year-old watched his play fall off a cliff in 2015, earning PFF's second-worst inside linebacker grade out of 60 qualifiers. Cutting Laurinaitis saves the Rams almost $6 million in cap space.

Rams MLB James Laurinaitis suffered a hyperextended elbow Week 7 against the Browns.

Laurinaitis suffered the injury on the second series of the game but was able to play through it. He is headed for an MRI on Monday, but NFL Network's Rand Getlin reports there is optimism he will be able to play through the injury. Laurinaitis has 45 combined tackles and a sack through six games this season.

Rams MLB James Laurinaitis (ankle) has resumed practicing.

Laurinaitis ended up missing nearly three weeks with a "mild" ankle sprain. The injury was to the same ankle Laurinaitis had scoped in the offseason. Despite the ankle issues, Laurinaitis should be considered ready to go for Week 1. He's never missed a game in five NFL seasons.

Rams MLB James Laurinaitis has a "mild" ankle sprain.

Laurinaitis underwent a cleanup procedure on his ankle in the offseason, so this has potential to become a lingering issue. Per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Laurinaitis has avoided a high-ankle sprain. Laurinaitis should be considered day to day and is questionable for the Rams preseason opener.

Rams MLB James Laurinaitis underwent ankle surgery just after the 2013 season.

It was a "cleanup" procedure, and Laurinaitis is "full speed now." The 27-year-old Mike 'backer is coming off a disappointing season, particularly in run defense. The Rams are scheduled to pay him a whopping $10 million salary in 2014.

After sitting out Wednesday and Thursday, MLB James Laurinaitis (back) returned to practice Friday and is listed as probable for the Rams’ game against the Vikings on Sunday.

Laurinaitis said he injured his back when he recovered a fumble late in the first quarter last Sunday against Buffalo, "and a really heavy man landed on my back. I was so slow that the lineman got me." Laurinaitis will play, so owners in IDP leagues can breathe a sigh of relief.

Rams signed MLB James Laurinaitis to a five-year, $41.5 million contract extension.

The deal includes $23.5 million guaranteed and runs through the 2017 season. Laurinaitis was entering the final year of his rookie deal and due just $620,000 in 2012. He has quietly become one of the better Mike linebackers in the league and locking him up along with LE Chris Long is a great start to the Les Snead tenure in St. Louis. Laurinaitis has yet to miss a game in his three-year career.

The Rams are expected to complete a contract extension with MLB James Laurinaitis before the start of the season.

Laurinaitis is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is set to earn just $620,000. He's never missed a game in his three-year career, has made at least 114 tackles in every season and ranked third in the league in solo tackles (105) last season. Along with LE Chris Long, Laurinaitis is a building block for the Rams' defense.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch confirms extension talks are "under way" between the Rams and MLB James Laurinaitis.

Beat writer Jim Thomas believes the sides are "probably" close to an agreement. Laurinaitis is currently due just $620,000 in the final year of his rookie deal. Laurinaitis has tallied at least 114 tackles every year since being the No. 35 overall pick of the 2009 draft. He'll play at 245 pounds this season after weighing in at 254 in 2011.
