Ex-Ravens QB Hunter Cantwell turned down a contract from the Jaguars to accept an assistant coaching position at Campbellsville (KY) University.
Cantwell would have competed for the No. 3 QB job in Jacksonville had the Jaguars been able to guarantee they would keep three quarterbacks. A former Louisville star, Cantwell spent three seasons on the practice squads of the Panthers and Ravens. He never attempted a pass in a regular-season NFL game. Thu, Jun 28, 2012 01:36:00 PM

Ravens waived QB Hunter Cantwell, DL Bryan Hall, DB Talmadge Jackson, LB Josh Bynes, FB Ryan Mahaffey, CB Josh Victorian, CB Danny Gorrer, C Pat Scales, OL Andre Ramsey, S Mana Silva, and LB Chavis Williams.

No surprises in this group. The Ravens will keep just two QBs on the final roster: Joe Flacco and Tyrod Taylor. Undrafted WR LaQuan Williams made the team.

Ravens signed QB Hunter Cantwell, RB Curtis Steele, WR Justin Harper, OL Andre Ramsey, OL Brady Bond, LB Albert McClellan, and CB Danny Gorrer to reserve/future contracts.

Cantwell never came close to making the Panthers' roster last summer after coaches spent the offseason singing his praises. Steele, undrafted out of Memphis last spring, has an outside chance to make the 2011 roster if Willis McGahee is cut, as expected.

Ravens released QB Hunter Cantwell from their practice squad.

Anquan Boldin, who entered Florida State as a quarterback, will be the emergency third QB this year. Cantwell is no longer worth a stash even in the deepest of Dynasty leagues despite the hype lavished on him by Panthers coaches this offseason.

Ravens signed QB Hunter Cantwell to their practice squad.

Cantwell was waived by Carolina Saturday after falling behind Jimmy Clausen and Tony Pike in a battle to back up Matt Moore. He will function as the Ravens' No. 3 quarterback behind starter Joe Flacco and backup Marc Bulger.

Panthers waived QB Hunter Cantwell.

The Panthers' coaching staff tried to push Cantwell as legitimate competition for No. 48 overall pick Jimmy Clausen in the spring, but Clausen beat out the ineffective passer handily in camp and preseason. Cantwell proved such a non-factor that the team will keep late-round rookie Tony Pike over him. It's another example of why we're always skeptical of "coachspeak."

The Associated Press confirms that Hunter Cantwell has fallen to No. 3 on the Panthers' quarterback depth chart, behind Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen.

The Panthers tried to talk up Cantwell in the spring, but Clausen is simply a much better talent and more game-ready. Cantwell will still beat out rookie Tony Pike to be third string. Clausen's lingering toe injury does make Moore's starting job that much more safe. Clausen won't be 100 percent all year.

Hunter Cantwell and Jimmy Clausen have alternated with the second and third teams throughout camp.

Cantwell opened camp as the clear No. 2 guy after impressing during spring practices. He has the arm, but Clausen has the pedigree. Either way, Matt Moore is going to begin the season as Carolina's starter. The battle here is to see who will step in if Moore scuffles. Moore may not have a long leash.

Hunter Cantwell spent the entire spring as the Panthers' No. 2 quarterback.

Cantwell has a monster arm that fits the Panthers' play-action passing game perfectly. He went undrafted in 2009 after developing some bad mechanics at Louisville, but beat writer Darin Gantt continues to beat the drum that Cantwell is for real. Still, it's hard to see him holding off second-round rookie Jimmy Clausen for the backup job behind Matt Moore.

The Charlotte Observer says that Hunter Cantwell's No. 2 QB tag is "not a courtesy title."

There's a little bit of controversy here, as rookie Jimmy Clausen was widely expected to be Matt Moore's backup on opening day. The Observer says the strong-armed Cantwell has earned the trust of coaches and teammates and is "closer than most would believe."

Panthers signed QB Hunter Cantwell off their practice squad.

Caldwell takes Jake Delhomme's (injured reserve, finger) spot on the roster. He will be the No. 3 quarterback behind Matt Moore and A.J. Feeley. Cantwell projects as a backup at best.

Panthers signed Louisville QB Hunter Cantwell.

Carolina has had modest success with undrafted rookie quarterbacks (see Brett Basanez, Matt Moore), and Cantwell has an NFL arm. Brian Brohm's successor has a big windup delivery, however, and lacks any sort of mobility.
