49ers RG Alex Boone will not report to training camp, as expected.
He won't cave like Vernon Davis. As the 38th-highest paid guard in the league, Boone has a far better case for a raise, and appears set to dig in for a long holdout. It's a sticky situation for the 49ers, who have been adamant they won't tear up existing deals for players with multiple years left on their contract, like Boone and Davis. CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco said there is "no way" 49ers RG Alex Boone reports to training camp on time without a new contract.

This echoes a previous story by ESPN's Bill Williamson. A holdout would put the 49ers in a difficult position. On one hand, the team has been adamant it will not tear up existing deals and give out raises. If they acquiesce to Boone, the 49ers would have to deal with others like Vernon Davis who are also after new contracts. On the other hand, Boone is a lynchpin of a dominant line, and San Francisco lacks alternatives capable of matching his play. When principles confront reality, reality usually wins out, and the reality is the 49ers need Boone to keep their offense ticking.

ESPN 49ers reporter Bill Williamson does not expect RG Alex Boone to report for training camp without a new contract.

In other words, Williamson senses Boone isn't running a bluff by skipping mandatory minicamp. He's currently the 38th-highest paid guard in football and is coming off a dominant campaign that saw Boone grade out third in PFF's rankings. The 49ers have been "steadfast in their stance" that they won't tear up existing deals and give out raises -- especially with two years left on the contract, as in Boone's case. But they may have to eventually relent here.

ProFootballTalk reports 49ers RG Alex Boone does not intend to report for mandatory minicamp.

Boone will forfeit nearly $70,000 if he does not attend. Boone is unhappy with a contract that is set to pay him "only" $2.2 million in salary and bonuses this season and $1.65 million next season. Boone has started 38 straight games and been an integral part of the 49ers' back-to-back playoff runs, but with several players up for extensions in the near future, Boone may be barking at the wind.

49ers RG Alex Boone is unhappy with his current contract and is skipping OTAs.

Entering season four of a five-year, $7.45 million deal, Boone is owed $2 million base salary this season. He's started all 32 games the past two seasons and was PFF's No. 2 right guard in 2012 before falling off as a pass blocker in 2013. The 6-foot-8, 300-pound mountain works best when he can get out in space as a run blocker. With LG Mike Iupati, Colin Kaepernick, and Michael Crabtree entering contract years, the 49ers are going to find it quite difficult to pay all their stars. Boone is unlikely to see an extension right now.

49ers OC Greg Roman suggested RG Alex Boone is coming off his best game of the season in Week 14 versus the Rams.

"When he gets out in space, he can get rolling, a bit like an 18-wheeler going down a hill," Roman said. Undrafted out of Ohio State in 2009, Boone has solidified the one vacancy on the 49ers' front line after converting from tackle. Pro Football Focus has rated Boone as a top-five guard for the majority of the season.

Alex Boone will enter training camp as the heavy favorite for the 49ers' starting right guard job.

Beat writer Matt Maiocco questions whether there will even be a competition. The Niners let Chilo Rachal and Adam Snyder walk without a fight in free agency, and Boone is well out in front of Daniel Kilgore and fourth-rounder Joe Looney. From left to right, the 49ers' starting front five projects to be LT Joe Staley, LG Mike Iupati, C Jonathan Goodwin, RG Boone, and RT Anthony Davis.

Coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed that Alex Boone is the frontrunner for the 49ers' starting right guard job in 2012.

Rookie Joe Looney would be a more viable competitor if he wasn't coming off a Lisfranc fracture. Daniel Kilgore will be a swing center/guard. Boone is tall for a guard at 6-foot-7, 328, but the 49ers are intent on putting their five best linemen on the field. Outgoing RG Adam Snyder (6'6/325) wasn't much smaller.

49ers OL Alex Boone is expected to compete for a starting guard job this year.

Coach Jim Harbaugh often referred to Boone as one of his seven "starting" linemen last season. The former Ohio State star played 172 snaps as a swing tackle and extra blocker in short-yardage packages. Right guard is vacant following Adam Snyder's exit, and Boone is in the mix along with 2011 fifth-rounder Daniel Kilgore.

49ers signed OT Alex Boone to a four-year contract extension with a $1.7 million signing bonus.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2009 after alcohol and conditioning issues killed his draft stock, Boone has played in all 12 games this season as a reserve after appearing in just one between 2009 and 2010. He should remain a reserve for the near future.

49ers OT Alex Boone has gone through a "body transformation," according to beat writer Matt Maiocco.

Boone was at 340 pounds with 25 percent body fat at one point last season. He dropped down to 300 by the end of the year and has since added 25 "good" pounds in the offseason. Boone spent all of his rookie year on the practice squad, and will be fighting for a roster spot again this camp.

49ers signed Ohio State OT Alex Boone.

Boone unsurprisingly was taken off most draft boards when he was arrested following a bizarre drunken tirade in February. The 49ers didn't solve their right tackle problem in the draft, so he'll have a fair chance to stick.

Ohio State OT Alex Boone told reporters at the Combine that he feels he doesn't "really need to prove much more" about his play after 3.5 years as a starter and wouldn't like to play right tackle at the next level.

He'll be lucky to play anywhere. Boone was arrested for jumping on car hoods after a drinking binge this month. Police had to taser him twice. Boone has also struggled at all-star events and may not be drafted at all.

Ohio State OT Alex Boone was arrested late Sunday for being uncooperative with police after allegedly "jumping on car hoods, yanking on a tow truck cable, and trying to break a window" in Aliso Viejo, California.

Boone, a 6'8/312-pound three-year starting left tackle for the Buckeyes, was tasered by police after the drunken tirade. Boone projects as a developmental right tackle in the pros, and this will significantly impact his already shaky draft stock. He was supposed to go in the fourth or fifth round.
