Colts re-signed DB Darius Butler to a one-year, $3 million contract.
With incentives, the deal carries a max value of $4.5 million. Butler flirted with the Bears and Redskins before deciding to stay put. The 30-year-old (he turns 31 Saturday) is a cornerback by trade but could be in the mix to start at free safety, where his biggest competition will come from 2016 second-round pick T.J. Green. Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star reports the Colts are still interested in re-signing free agent DB Darius Butler.

"Don't close the door on him returning to the Colts just yet," Holder cautioned. Butler visited the Bears over the weekend, but he has not been linked with any other teams. The lack of interest could allow Indy to bring him back at a bargain.

Free agent DB Darius Butler is visiting the Bears on Saturday.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports it is "the first of several scheduled trips." Butler has the ability to play in the slot but has said he is ready to transition full-time to safety. The Bears could use help at both spots.

Impending free agent DB Darius Butler said he's ready to transition full-time to safety.

Butler received strong marks from Pro Football Focus for his coverage this season. Butler turns 31 in March and offers slot corner versatility. Moving to safety is a way to prolong his career as he enters his ninth NFL season.

Colts CB Darius Butler (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 17.

At least according to Pro Football Focus' grades, Butler has been the Colts' best cornerback this year. With Allen Robinson moving around the formation more under Doug Marrone, Butler's absence upgrades Robinson's Week 17 matchup.

Colts CB Darius Butler is in the NFL's concussion protocol.

Butler should be able to play against the Jaguars if he gets medical clearance, but the Colts probably won't rush it with their 7-8 season down the tubes.

Colts CB Darius Butler (hand) has been upgraded to questionable for Week 6.

The Colts initially ruled out Butler. He didn't practice this week after having surgery on his broken finger. Butler is a game-time decision against Houston.

Colts CB Darius Butler will undergo surgery to repair a broken finger.

Butler has proven extremely injury-prone early in the season. He's already missed time with knee and hamstring injuries, and now this. Butler, the Colts' slot corner, is uncertain for Week 6, though we doubt he plays.

Colts CB Darius Butler left Sunday's Week 2 game against the Broncos with a hamstring injury and will not return.

Colts CB Darius Butler (ankle) returned to a limited practice Wednesday.

Butler's return is great news for a team desperate for healthy bodies in the secondary. He will likely be listed as questionable, but Butler should be on track to play after practicing this early in the week.

Colts CB Darius Butler (ankle) could return to practice on Wednesday.

Emphasis on "could," as coach Chuck Pagano was far from declarative on Butler's status Monday. The Colts' secondary is in absolute disarray, but if there's good news, it's that Trevor Siemian is on tap for Week 2.
