Updating a previous item, the only guaranteed portion of Clay Matthews' five-year, $66 million extension is his $20.5 million signing bonus.
The Packers didn't guarantee any of his salaries. Matthews obviously won't be released in the first two years because the cap hit would be astronomical, but GM Ted Thompson could begin reassessing whether Matthews is worth retaining as soon as 2015. The contract ultimately makes Matthews the NFL's third-highest defender in terms of average annual worth -- behind only Mario Williams and Julius Peppers -- but the guaranteed money is far, far lower. Packers agreed to terms with OLB Clay Matthews on a five-year, $66 million contract extension through 2018.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the deal includes roughly $31 million guaranteed, which is $9 million less than DeMarcus Ware received in 2009. It speaks to the ongoing "market reset." Matthews, who has 43 sacks through his first 58 NFL games, was going into the final year of his rookie contract. The deal could include a fairly sizable 2013 cap hit, as the Pack have worked diligently to keep space open this season. Next on the docket for Green Bay is Aaron Rodgers, who should sign the most lucrative contract in league history.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport believes the Packers and Clay Matthews are "real close" to an extension.

Matthews and Aaron Rodgers both wanted new deals by the start of the Packers' offseason program on Monday, but it appears only Matthews is close. Predictably, the massive money involved has slowed down the Rodgers talks. Both players have a good shot at being extended before camp begins. Per Rapoport, Matthews' deal could average "around" $13 million per season.

ESPN's Adam Schefter expects Clay Matthews' contract extension to pay him more than $13 million per season.

Schefter also considers a new deal a matter of when, not if. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported last week the sides were close to an agreement. The Packers could have both Matthews and Aaron Rodgers locked up long-term before the draft.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that the Packers are close to finalizing an extension with Clay Matthews.

The Packers opened talks with Matthews at the Combine and are believed to have a deal in place. The expectation is that both Matthews and Aaron Rodgers will be signed to long-term contracts before the draft. Matthews is currently due $3.73 million this season after escalators increased his salary from $1.492 million.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel expects the Packers and Clay Matthews to discuss a contract extension at the Combine.

Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Matthews is due $3.73 million after escalators increased his salary from $1.492 million. One of the league's premier defenders, Matthews could be angling to become the NFL's highest paid pass-rushing linebacker. The seven-year, $79 million contract Dallas' DeMarcus Ware signed in 2009 included $40 million guaranteed.

Clay Matthews' 2013 salary increased from $1,492,500 to $3.73 million after he hit escalators in his rookie deal.

Matthews is entering the final year of his contract and is coming off a 13-sack campaign. He did miss four starts in 2012 with a hamstring injury, but prior to that, Matthews had missed just two games in three years since being the No. 26 overall pick in 2009. The Packers have plenty of candidates for extensions this offseason.

Clay Matthews (hamstring) returned with two sacks, two quarterback hits, six tackles and a pass breakup in Sunday's Week 15 win over the Bears.

Matthews emerged from his first game since Week 9 feeling "good." He now has 11 sacks in just 10 games played this season. Matthews will wreak havoc on a depleted Titans' offensive line in Week 16.

Packers OLB Clay Matthews (hamstring) is active, as expected, for Week 15 at Chicago.

Matthews' snaps will be limited, but he's likely to play on most passing downs. He tormented Bears LT J'Marcus Webb in the previous matchup, racking up 3.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, four QB hits and a pass defensed. Packers inactives: WR Jordy Nelson, DB Charles Woodson, WR Donald Driver, TE D.J. Williams, RB James Starks, DE C.J. Wilson, and LB Terrell Manning.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy and DC Dom Capers both indicated that OLB Clay Matthews' snaps will be limited in his Week 15 return from a hamstring injury.

Matthews still figures to play on almost every passing-down snap, so he will definitely impact the pass game of Chicago even if he's only a 50-or-so-percent player. "I think we’d be smart to watch his reps," McCarthy said. "It’s something we’ve talked about with him personally and a number of guys coming back. This is a very important game, but there’s more left to be played after this."

Packers OLB Clay Matthews (hamstring) is listed as probable for Week 15 against the Bears.

Matthews wreaked havoc on the Bears' offensive line during the Week 2 Chicago-Green Bay game, playing all over the defensive formation in a "joker" role. His return to the lineup is not good news for Jay Cutler's Week 15 fantasy prospects.

Packers OLB Clay Matthews (hamstring) resumed practicing on Wednesday, getting in a limited session.

As expected. Matthews has been sidelined since Week 9, but barring a setback, he should be back in the lineup against the Bears Sunday. His status will be updated sometime between now and Sunday.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy expressed "hope" Monday that OLB Clay Matthews (hamstring) and FS Charles Woodson (collarbone) will be able to practice this week and play against the Bears.

Woodson has been out since Week 7 with a fractured collarbone, while Matthews has nursed a severe hamstring strain since Week 9. The return of Matthews and Woodson would be terrific news for a pass defense that has slumped for the past month. We'll know more about their availabilities as the week moves along.

Packers OLB Clay Matthews (hamstring) is preparing for a Week 15 return versus the Bears.

He's been formally ruled out for Week 14. Coach Mike McCarthy hinted that both Matthews and Charles Woodson (collarbone) would return for the all-important game that could decide the division title. The loser of that game will find itself in a tight battle for a wild card spot.

Clay Matthews (hamstring) didn't return to Packers practice Wednesday.

It puts Matthews on track to miss his fifth straight game. His status will be updated later in the week, but we don't expect him to suit up against the Lions.
