Bills C Eric Wood's official retirement has been put on hold due to salary cap issues.

Wood was nearly an hour late to his own retirement presser, and then read just a one-minute statement without taking questions. GM Brandon Beane alluded to cap concerns. "We don't have any cap room right now," Beane said. "You roll it over (into the next season). He'll be on our roster for a while, until we figure things out." Wood avoided using the word "retirement" for procedural reasons, though he acknowledged he will not be playing football anymore. Wood should get a proper sendoff at some point this offseason, likely after June 1, when his cap hit can be better spread out.

Bills C Eric Wood is retiring from the NFL after nine seasons.

A neck injury is partly to blame for Wood calling it quits, though the Buffalo News' Tim Graham reports Wood was going to hang the cleats up regardless. Wood was the 28th overall pick in the 2009 draft and spent all nine of his seasons in Buffalo, making the playoffs for the first time this past season. He made 120 career starts and was a one-time Pro Bowl selection in 2015. It's a big loss from a leadership standpoint as well. Ryan Groy makes sense as a replacement.

SCOUT Fantasy Sports reports Bills C Eric Wood has a career-ending neck injury.

A career Bill, Wood went to the playoffs for the first time this season after being a 2009 first-rounder by Buffalo. He played every snap this season, so it's unclear exactly when or how he was hurt. According to SCOUT, the Bills will hold a press conference on Monday. It's a big loss for the Bills on and off the field. Ryan Groy is the logical replacement for Wood currently on the roster.

Bills signed C Eric Wood to a two-year, $21.275 million extension through 2019.

It's the first extension under new GM Brandon Beane. An eight-year starter, Wood was entering the final season of his deal. Wood has looked fully healthy after injures limited him to nine games in 2016. He was having one of his better years before going down and is a solid veteran presence on the interior. Wood is now signed through his age-33 season.

Bills C Eric Wood (leg) expects to be 100 percent for training camp.

Wood got in limited work at OTAs. There’s no concern over his status. Coming off an injury-shortened 2016, Wood needs to stay healthy in a contract year.

Bills C Eric Wood (fibula) is back doing team drills.

Wood broke his right fibula back in November and had a screw inserted, but he appears to be close to full health. The long-time Bill should be a full-go for camp.

Bills placed C Eric Wood on injured reserve with a broken right fibula.

He won't be back this season. Although Wood wasn't having one of his best years, his loss will be felt by the Bills' running game, where Ryan Groy will now take over at center. Wood will be back at his $4.125 million salary in 2017.

Bills C Eric Wood will undergo surgery on his broken right fibula on Wednesday, and will be sidelined 6-8 weeks.

Wood had a screw inserted. He does not know if he'll be placed on injured reserve. Wood would not be eligible to "return," as that status appears poised to be bestowed on Sammy Watkins. Wood is important enough to the Bills' fortunes that it would make sense to hold off placing him on I.R. in the event of a(n admittedly improbable) playoff run.

Bills C Eric Wood has been diagnosed with a broken leg and will miss the rest of the season.

Coach Rex Ryan made the announcement in his post-game press conference. Wood was hurt at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Ryan Groy replaced him with normal backup C Patrick Lewis inactive. It's a huge loss for the Bills. Wood is a leader up front and helps set up blocking assignments.

Bills C Eric Wood was carted off with a right ankle injury in the fourth quarter of Week 9 against the Seahawks.

Wood was rolled up from behind on Mike Gillislee's one-yard touchdown run early the final frame. He was immediately ruled out for the rest of the game, suggesting it's serious. Ryan Groy is now in at the pivot for Buffalo.

Bills C Eric Wood has agreed to reduce his base salary from $4.775 million to $1 million.

$3.775 million of his base salary for 2016 will be converted into a signing bonus. The contract restructure clears about $2.5 million in cap space. The Bills also added a voidable year to Wood's contract. Wood received PFF's fifth-highest grade out of 40 qualifiers at center last season.

The Bills did not have a 100-yard rusher last season.

It's the first time that's happened since 1979. The Bills addressed the need by adding free agent Richie Incognito and drafting Louisville guard John Miller. Buffalo also installed Greg Roman as the new offensive coordinator. "I love the variety of it," said Eric Wood of Roman's new offense. "At times it seems like the O-line’s trying to play finesse ball and kind of just reach you and scoop you off. And at other times, they’re really trying to knock you off the ball. And for a defense, that’s tough to prepare for." Buffalo's revamped O-line will need to open up holes for LeSean McCoy, who figures to see a massive workload this season.

The Bills could ask C Eric Wood to take a pay cut.

Coming off a down year, Wood has a $6.65 million cap hit. He graded out as a bottom-15 center by PFF and is a prime candidate to restructure. The Bills have $16.86M in cap space after trading for LeSean McCoy and Matt Cassel.

Updating a previous item, the Bills signed C Eric Wood to a four-year, $25.4 million extension through the 2017 season.

The deal includes a $9 million signing bonus. Wood's new deal averages $5.45 million annually, which slots him in as the fifth-highest paid center just ahead of the Giants' David Baas. The former first-round pick graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 11 center last season. He'll make $2.3 million in 2013.
