Steelers FS Mike Mitchell recently underwent surgery on his left hand.

He also had offseason shoulder surgery. Mitchell was noncommittal when asked if he'd be ready for OTAs in May. Mitchell was one of the only bright spots on Pittsburgh's talent-deprived secondary last year, earning PFF's 24th-best safety grade out of 88 qualifiers and forcing five turnovers.

Steelers FS Mike Mitchell will undergo shoulder surgery and be sidelined 4-6 months.

Mitchell should be ready for training camp, but he may be limited at the start. Either way, he'll be fine in time for Week 1. Mitchell had a strong season on the back end for the Steelers, as their issues in the secondary were more at cornerback. Hard-hitting Mitchell has three years left on his contract.

Steelers FS Mike Mitchell agreed to a restructured contract, clearing $2.5 million in salary-cap space.

Mitchell is converting a $2 million roster bonus and $1 million of his salary into a signing bonus. He won't lose any money, but it helps improve Pittsburgh's cap situation. Mitchell is entering the second season of a five-year, $25 million deal.

Steelers FS Mike Mitchell will undergo groin surgery later this week.

Looking for a talent and youth infusion in their secondary, the Steelers signed Mitchell to a five-year, $25 million contract in free agency last year. He started every game and played just about every snap, but struggled badly in coverage as part of Pittsburgh's No. 27 pass defense. Mitchell says the groin -- which he originally injured before the start of training camp -- was a big reason for his woes.

Steelers agreed to terms with FS Mike Mitchell, formerly of the Panthers, on a five-year, $25 million contract.

Mitchell, 27 in June, had a number of teams hot on his trail. The Steelers are replacing an aging Ryan Clark with a young, hard hitter in Mitchell at free safety next to Troy Polamalu. Mitchell is coming off a career-year, and it'll be interesting to see if he was a product of the Panthers' stout front seven. The talent on the defensive line in Pittsburgh isn't comparable. Mitchell can cover and play the run.

The Eagles have "reached out" to free agent SS Mike Mitchell.

The Charlotte Observer reported over the weekend that the Redskins and Eagles were the teams showing the "most interest" in Mitchell, a 26-year-old in-the-box safety coming off a career year. Both Washington and Philly need safety help.

The Charlotte Observer reports the Redskins and Eagles are showing the "most interest" in free agent FS Mike Mitchell.

The Bears, Broncos, and Falcons are a notch below the two NFC East clubs. With Jairus Byrd and T.J. Ward expected to land lucrative deals as the top two free agent safeties, Mitchell might be viewed as more of a bargain. He should have no trouble landing a multi-year deal at $4-5 million annually.

The Charlotte Observer reports free agent FS Mike Mitchell is drawing interest from the Bears, Eagles, Broncos and Falcons.

Mitchell had a breakout 2013 playing for the Panthers on a one-year deal, but is unlikely to be brought back due to salary cap constraints. He appeared in 15 games last season, finishing with 66 tackles, four interceptions, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Mitchell can play both safety positions and shouldn't have any trouble landing a multi-year deal.

The Charlotte Observer expects free agents FS Mike Mitchell and WR/KR Ted Ginn Jr. to hit the open market.

Both are priorities for Carolina, but the Panthers' salary cap concerns have made re-signing both difficult. Mitchell flourished as a starter in 2013, recording 66 tackles, four interceptions, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Ginn posted a 36-556-5 line in a breakout 2013 campaign.

The Panthers will reportedly "look to lock up" free agent FS Mike Mitchell.

Playing on a one-year deal last season, Mitchell racked up 66 tackles, four interceptions, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. He was a play-maker for a secondary that doesn't have many of them. Mitchell is still only 27. He'd have a nice little market if he reached free agency.

ESPN Redskins reporter John Keim hears the team likes free agent FS Mike Mitchell.

The Redskins have holes at both safety spots. Mitchell can play either one. He's coming off a career-year and will look to cash in after playing on a one-year, $1 million deal in Carolina. It's also quite possible he was a product of the Panthers' fearsome front seven. Mitchell is a big-time hitter on the back end and does his best work as a blitzer and in coverage.

The Charlotte Observer expects the Panthers to make re-signing FS Mike Mitchell a priority.

Mitchell greatly outperformed his one-year, $1 million deal in 2013. He made 15 starts, making 67 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles, and four interceptions. Mitchell is also known as a big hitter who racks up the occasional personal foul penalty. He'll turn 27 in June and is our No. 10 free agent safety. The former second-round pick should be able to land a multi-year deal.

Coach Ron Rivera says the Panthers will use a strong safety rotation with Mike Mitchell returning from his calf injury.

Mitchell and Quintin Mikell are going to share snaps, creating a headache IDP situation. "They're both going to play,'' Rivera said on Friday. "We've got to continue to evaluate it. Come Sunday we'll have a feeling for what direction we'll head and how we'll rotate those guys."
