The Giants are unlikely to re-sign impending free agent DT Rocky Bernard.
Bernard was a strong pass-rushing defensive tackle in his heyday, but that time has passed as he approaches 34 years old. The Giants already re-signed one 34-year-old in Shaun Rogers on Thursday. Bernard should be able to land a one-year deal somewhere, though. Feb 8 - 9:51 AM

Date:

Giants defensive tackle Rocky Bernard (quadriceps) has been ruled out for Week 5 against the Browns.

Bernard will be replaced in the starting lineup by second-year player Marvin Austin. Bernard, 33, has amassed 14 tackles and a sack in the season's first four weeks after re-signing with the Giants in the offseason.

Giants re-signed DT Rocky Bernard.

The 33-year-old Bernard appeared in all 16 games with the G-Men last season, netting 30 tackles but no sacks. With Marvin Austin back healthy and Shaun Rogers aboard, Bernard will be fighting just for a roster spot in training camp.

Giants re-signed DT Rocky Bernard.

The 32-year-old has little left in the tank, but it doesn't hurt to bring back a veteran in the system when youngsters Linval Joseph and Marvin Austin are slated for such large roles. Bernard has one sack over the past two seasons.

Giants informed DT Rocky Bernard of his release.

He was due a $2.95 million base salary. Bernard's body is breaking down at age 32, and the sides couldn't agree to a restructured contract, after all. Perhaps the Rams will show interest. Bernard is familiar with Steve Spagnuolo's defensive terminology, and St. Louis missed out on Barry Cofield Tuesday night.

Giants DT Rocky Bernard has agreed to restructure his contract in order to create cap space for the team.

Details of the "modification" are unclear, but he may have dropped his salary to the league minimum. (That's what usually happens.) Bernard was due $2.95 million after playing less than a third of the Giants' 2010 defensive snaps. The 32-year-old finished with 18 tackles and two sacks in 14 appearances.

Giants DT Rocky Bernard played all of last season with a partially torn rotator cuff.

This at least partially explains why Bernard busted so badly as a free agent. After suffering the injury last May, he said he felt pain on nearly every play and tallied just one sack to go with 22 tackles. Bernard finally had surgery after last season and is hopeful he'll be at 100 percent for Week 1.

The Giants do not plan on making any more cuts until free agency opens, sources tell beat writer Ralph Vacchiano.

DT Rocky Bernard remains a candidate to be released after a dismal 2009 campaign, but he's safe for now. Other veterans that appear to be on the chopping block include RT Kareem McKenzie and LG Rich Seubert.

Giants DT Rocky Bernard is a candidate to be released this offseason.

Bernard was a free agent bust in 2009, unable to get into the defensive line rotation even when he was healthy. Though he has three years and $9.1 million remaining on his deal, none of it is guaranteed. The Giants have no reason to keep him around at that rate.

Giants DT Rocky Bernard (hamstring) passed his physical Wednesday morning and will be removed from the NFI list later in the day.

Bernard signed a big contract in March so the Giants expect him to contribute. He'll be worked back in slowly but should be ready for Week 1. He'll be part of the rotation.

The Giants plan to use new DT Rocky Bernard as an interior pass rusher in their nickel package.

Bernard got a $5 million signing bonus on his four-year, $16M contract. It may seem like a lot to pay a situational player, but the Giants believe their rotation will keep everyone fresh and all members hungry for production.

Giants agreed to terms with DT Rocky Bernard on a four-year, $16 million contract.

Bernard, 30, is a pocket pusher whose play has declined since a nine-sack 2005 season, but he should be effective in a "wave" role behind starters Fred Robbins and Barry Cofield. He won't be a three-down player. Bernard showed he can still produce by posting a career-best 55 tackles in 2008.

Talks between the Giants and DT Rocky Bernard are reportedly "heating up."

He's been at Giants Stadium all day and a deal could be near. He would look good in a rotation with two other underrated tackles: Fred Robbins and Barry Cofield.

In addition to Michael Boley, the Giants are hosting free agent DT Rocky Bernard for a visit Friday.

The Giants have concern at defensive tackle with starters Barry Cofield and Fred Robbins both coming off arthroscopic knee surgery. Bernard would add depth as a third or fourth tackle and some pass-rush ability up the middle.

The Lions are expected to pursue free agent DT Rocky Bernard.

A penetrating tackle, Bernard would've been an ideal fit in a Tampa 2 earlier in his career but has lost a step. He could start next to Cory Redding. Detroit couldn't do much worse than incumbent Chartric Darby at that position.
