Chargers signed CB Derek Cox, formerly of the Jaguars, to a four-year, $20 million contract.
The deal includes $10.25 million guaranteed. One of the better young cover corners in football, Cox signed with the Bolts before making a scheduled trip to New Orleans. He was drawing interest from all around the league. Cox has picked off four passes in three of his first four NFL campaigns, but has also missed three or more games each of the past three seasons. He should specialize in press coverage in DC John Pagano's system. Mar 13 - 11:52 PM

The Jaguars have dropped out of the running for free agent CB Derek Cox.

Cox may wind up deciding between the Saints and Chargers; he's visiting New Orleans on Thursday and San Diego on Friday. Cox, 26, is one of the better young corners on the market. He's likely eyeing a deal like Chris Houston's.
Mar 13 - 4:57 PM

Free agent CB Derek Cox has lined up visits with the Saints and Chargers.

It's the first time he's been linked to the Saints, who will host Cox on Thursday. Cox is also expected to draw interest from the Redskins, and hasn't been ruled out in Jacksonville.

The Tampa Bay Times reports free agent CB Derek Cox is "almost a lock" to sign somewhere other than Tampa.

The Tampa Tribune reports the Bucs are "still kicking (Cox's) tires," but it sounds like he's heading elsewhere. The Redskins and Chargers are both expected to make runs at the Jaguar, while Jacksonville is still in the mix.

An "industry source" tells the Florida Times Union free agent CB Derek Cox will likely command a deal worth roughly $24 million over four years.

So $6 million annually. The "industry source" is presumably someone who knows about NFL contracts, has a grasp of Cox's value, and isn't his agent. The Bucs, Redskins, Chargers, and Jaguars are each known to have interest in Cox.
Mar 11 - 11:13 PM

The Union-Tribune San Diego reports the Chargers have expressed interest in free agent CB Derek Cox.

Cox has seen his market heat up over the weekend. He has now been linked to the Bolts, Bucs, and Redskins, while the Jaguars haven't given up on him. Cox has ideal size at 6-foot-1, 190 for Chargers DC John Pagano's press defense.
Mar 11 - 7:21 PM

The Jaguars have reached out to free agent CB Derek Cox.

Despite ample salary cap space, Jacksonville does not plan to be a big free agent bidder. GM David Caldwell may be sensing, however, that Cox's price tag will be affordable. By all appearances, Cox is in for a solid pay day from our view. The Buccaneers and Redskins have both been strongly linked.
Mar 11 - 3:34 PM

The Tampa Tribune reports the Bucs are "continuing their pursuit" of free agent CB Derek Cox, and could sign him "out of the chute" on Tuesday.

The Bucs have two crater-sized holes at cornerback, and have apparently made Cox their top target. Going on 27, Cox isn't a special player, but would certainly improve a pass defense that allowed a league-worst 297.4 yards per game last season.
Mar 11 - 11:08 AM

The Tampa Bay Times is "pretty certain" the Bucs have been in contact with free agent CB Derek Cox.

No team has a bigger need at cornerback than the Bucs, and they figure to leave no stone unturned in free agency. They've reportedly reached out to free agent Sean Smith. Cox would be cheaper.
Mar 9 - 7:37 PM

The Florida Times Union confirms the Redskins are among the teams "expected to be interested" in free agent CB Derek Cox.

The Washington Examiner floated the Cox idea earlier in the day. We'd add Denver as a second potential landing spot for Cox. Former Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio now coordinates the Broncos' defense and needs a bookend for Champ Bailey.
Mar 8 - 11:46 PM

The Washington Examiner's John Keim passes along free agent CB Derek Cox as a "name to keep an eye on" for the Redskins this weekend.

Cox played college ball at William & Mary in Virginia, and the Redskins will have a cornerback need whether or not they release DeAngelo Hall. (We suspect they will.) Cox is young (26) and an effective enough cover corner to command a multi-year deal. Hall would have to be cut for the cap-strapped Skins to afford Cox.
Mar 8 - 2:20 PM

According to the Florida Times Union, the Jaguars want free agent CB Derek Cox back, but "only at the right price."

It's an indication Cox won't be back in Jacksonville, as his agent is on the record as expecting a "vigorous" market. Cox is worthy of a nice payday, but could find his market depressed by the glut of available corners.
Mar 1 - 10:10 AM

Free agent CB Derek Cox's agent expects a "vigorous market" for his client's services.

Agent David Sullivan and the Jaguars will meet at the Combine on Saturday. If Cox can stay healthy, he's a fine player. He battled hamstring and back injuries in 2012, costing him four games. Cox is currently Rotoworld's No. 7 free-agent corner.
Feb 22 - 4:06 PM

Jaguars GM David Caldwell said the team will not franchise-tag free agent CB Derek Cox.

The team will meet with Cox's agent at the Combine, though, in hopes of retaining him. Cox has proven to be a fine player when he's on the field, but he's failed to play all 16 games in each of the past three years. Cox checks in as our No. 7 free-agent corner in a deep class.
Feb 21 - 2:18 PM

According to the Florida Times Union, "indications are" the Jaguars won't use the franchise tag.

Beat writer Ryan O'Halloran believes the Jags should use the tag as a "prove it" mechanism for free agent CB Derek Cox, but has apparently been told it's unlikely. The $10.7 million Cox would bring home under the tag would be a gargantuan sum for a player who toed the line between liability and asset last season.
