Vikings signed CB Derek Cox, formerly of the Chargers, to a one-year, $780,000 contract.
Cox was one of the top free-agent corners last March and signed a four-year, $20 million deal with the Chargers. He was flat-out awful and got his walking papers earlier this month. With the Jaguars from 2009-2012, Cox flashed No. 1 abilities. If he's to resurrect his career, going to Minnesota and playing for Mike Zimmer is the spot. Cox could start opposite Xavier Rhodes, with Captain Munnerlyn in the slot. Cox is still only 27 years old. Mar 13 - 8:16 PM

Chargers released CB Derek Cox.

Cox inked a four-year, $20 million contract on the second day of free agency last year and received $10.25 million guaranteed for one season of abysmal play. The Chargers save $4.25 million in cash but are eating $3.9 million in dead money. The move clears just $1.65 million in cap space. Cox was benched multiple times last season. He was deemed expendable for a team that really needs corner help. Cox is still just 27 years old.

CB Derek Cox is not expected to return to the Chargers in 2014.

Cox was perhaps the biggest bust of 2013 free agency. He landed a four-year, $20 million deal from the Chargers, and proceeded to grade out as one of the league's worst corners while getting benched in favor of street pickups like Crezdon Butler repeatedly. Giving up on Cox before the new league year would save $4.25 million in cash and up to $4.25 million against the 2014 cap, but would create $3.9 million in total dead money.

Chargers CB Derek Cox was benched yet again in Sunday's Week 12 win at Kansas City.

It's the third time in four games Cox has been benched. On Sunday, he gave up a 32-yard touchdown to Donnie Avery and then another 36-yard gain to Avery. Cox, who signed a four-year, $20 million deal in free agency, didn't play a snap in the second half. Even when Shareece Wright went down with an injury in the second half, the coaches turned to Crezdon Butler instead of Cox.

Chargers CB Derek Cox was benched three plays into Sunday's loss to the Broncos.

Last week, Cox was benched in the third quarter. This week, the Chargers wasted no time after he couldn't get off a block and slow down Julius Thomas on a 74-yard touchdown catch. Cox, who signed a four-year, $20 million deal in March, has graded out as one of the worst corners in the league this year. Richard Marshall is his backup.

The Chargers benched CB Derek Cox during their Week 9 loss to Washington.

Cox has been a major bust since signing a four-year, $20 million deal in the offseason. He's one of the primary reasons San Diego's pass defense has been so porous. "We made a decision to put someone else in," coach Mike McCoy explained. "We'll do whatever we think is best to make the team win."

Chargers signed CB Derek Cox, formerly of the Jaguars, to a four-year, $20 million contract.

The deal includes $10.25 million guaranteed. One of the better young cover corners in football, Cox signed with the Bolts before making a scheduled trip to New Orleans. He was drawing interest from all around the league. Cox has picked off four passes in three of his first four NFL campaigns, but has also missed three or more games each of the past three seasons. He should specialize in press coverage in DC John Pagano's system.

The Jaguars have dropped out of the running for free agent CB Derek Cox.

Cox may wind up deciding between the Saints and Chargers; he's visiting New Orleans on Thursday and San Diego on Friday. Cox, 26, is one of the better young corners on the market. He's likely eyeing a deal like Chris Houston's.

Free agent CB Derek Cox has lined up visits with the Saints and Chargers.

It's the first time he's been linked to the Saints, who will host Cox on Thursday. Cox is also expected to draw interest from the Redskins, and hasn't been ruled out in Jacksonville.

The Tampa Bay Times reports free agent CB Derek Cox is "almost a lock" to sign somewhere other than Tampa.

The Tampa Tribune reports the Bucs are "still kicking (Cox's) tires," but it sounds like he's heading elsewhere. The Redskins and Chargers are both expected to make runs at the Jaguar, while Jacksonville is still in the mix.

An "industry source" tells the Florida Times Union free agent CB Derek Cox will likely command a deal worth roughly $24 million over four years.

So $6 million annually. The "industry source" is presumably someone who knows about NFL contracts, has a grasp of Cox's value, and isn't his agent. The Bucs, Redskins, Chargers, and Jaguars are each known to have interest in Cox.

The Union-Tribune San Diego reports the Chargers have expressed interest in free agent CB Derek Cox.

Cox has seen his market heat up over the weekend. He has now been linked to the Bolts, Bucs, and Redskins, while the Jaguars haven't given up on him. Cox has ideal size at 6-foot-1, 190 for Chargers DC John Pagano's press defense.

The Jaguars have reached out to free agent CB Derek Cox.

Despite ample salary cap space, Jacksonville does not plan to be a big free agent bidder. GM David Caldwell may be sensing, however, that Cox's price tag will be affordable. By all appearances, Cox is in for a solid pay day from our view. The Buccaneers and Redskins have both been strongly linked.

The Tampa Tribune reports the Bucs are "continuing their pursuit" of free agent CB Derek Cox, and could sign him "out of the chute" on Tuesday.

The Bucs have two crater-sized holes at cornerback, and have apparently made Cox their top target. Going on 27, Cox isn't a special player, but would certainly improve a pass defense that allowed a league-worst 297.4 yards per game last season.

The Tampa Bay Times is "pretty certain" the Bucs have been in contact with free agent CB Derek Cox.

No team has a bigger need at cornerback than the Bucs, and they figure to leave no stone unturned in free agency. They've reportedly reached out to free agent Sean Smith. Cox would be cheaper.
