Bucs DT Henry Melton says the coaching staff has approached him about playing defensive end.
The Bucs have the worst defensive end depth chart in the league, with Jacquies Smith and George Johnson penciled in as starters. "They have brought that up to me and we’ve been messing with the rotation a little bit," said Melton. "We’re just going to take it into training camp and see what works." Melton played a handful of snaps at defensive end in Dallas last year, but was mostly used as an interior tackle. His pass-rush ability gives the Bucs some flexibility. Jun 14 - 12:07 PM

Date:

Bucs agreed to terms with DT Henry Melton, formerly of the Cowboys, on a one-year contract.

Melton reunites with coach Lovie Smith, whom he played under in Chicago. The 28-year-old will be part of the rotation with Gerald McCoy and Clinton McDonald, giving the Bucs an interior pass-rush upgrade on free agent Da'Quan Bowers.

Free agent DT Henry Melton will visit the Bucs.

Melton, 28, played three years under coach Lovie Smith in Chicago and went to a Pro Bowl. Coming off a torn ACL, Melton notched five sacks across 433 snaps for the Cowboys last season. He should be even closer to 100 percent in 2015.

The Dallas Morning News reports the Cowboys have declined to pick up DT Henry Melton's three-year, $24 million option.

Dallas had until Sunday to make a decision, but they were never expected to pick up the option. Although he can rush the passer, Melton reportedly rubbed the coaching staff the wrong way and was almost deactivated two separate times. Melton will be an unrestricted free agent for the second straight offseason. He is Rotoworld's No. 8 available interior defensive lineman.

ESPN Dallas doesn't expect the Cowboys to make a strong push to re-sign free agent DT Henry Melton.

Melton reportedly rubbed the coaching staff the wrong way this past season and was almost deactivated two separate times on game days. The Cowboys will decline Melton's three-year, $24 million team option on Monday and allow him to hit the market. Dallas likes DT Tyrone Crawford as its starting three-technique. GM Jerry Jones will be in the market for an upgrade at nose tackle.

The Cowboys have to decide by February 15 whether to exercise the three-year, $24 million option on DT Henry Melton's contract.

That's two Mondays from now. The Cowboys are expected to decline the option, making Melton an unrestricted free agent. February 15 is also the date on which RE Doug Free's contract voids. Both will hit the open market.
Feb 8 - 11:24 AM

The Cowboys are expected to decline DT Henry Melton's three-year team option, making him a free agent.

Melton would receive a three-year, $24 million deal were he to remain on the Cowboys' roster for the first day of the new league year, but he's fully expected to be sent to the open market. It's possible he'll end up back in Big D on a revamped deal after notching five sacks in just 433 snaps this season. Melton will be two years removed from tearing his ACL next fall.
Jan 20 - 5:47 PM

Cowboys placed DT Henry Melton on injured reserve with a bone bruise in his knee, ending his season.

LB James Anderson was signed in a corresponding roster move. It's a huge loss for a Cowboys team that generated just 28 sacks this season (28th in the league). Melton's five quarterback takedowns were second on the team behind Jeremy Mincey's six even though he played just 433 snaps. If there's good news for Melton, it's that the injury is to his right knee. He missed the majority of 2013 with a torn left ACL. The one-year deal Melton signed last March turns into a four-year deal if he's on the Cowboys roster on the first day of the 2015 league year.

Cowboys DT Henry Melton (knee) could miss the playoffs.

Melton went down in Sunday's win over the Redskins, and is undergoing an MRI on Monday. Even though the test results aren't back, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the injury is considered serious. A situational pass rusher, Melton played just 433 snaps this season, but generated consistent heat. He'd be a big loss for the Cowboys' thin defensive line.

Cowboys DT Henry Melton (hamstring) is expected to miss Week 4 against the Saints.

Melton has started each of the Cowboys' past two games next to DT Nick Hayden. He's graded out as a top-three pass-rushing defensive tackle at Pro Football Focus. Melton's absence is an upgrade to Drew Brees' matchup.

Cowboys DT Henry Melton (groin) has resumed practicing.

The Cowboys weren't in full pads, but Melton got some first-team reps. Barring a setback, he'll be ready for Week 1, where he'll be tasked with anchoring the league's worst front seven.

Cowboys DT Henry Melton (groin) remains sidelined, but is "confident" he'll be ready for Week 1.

Melton was originally deemed day to day when he went down eight days ago, but is clearly more week to week. He's not going to suit up for this week's regular-season dress rehearsal. In theory, it's not a concern, but it's eye-brow raising for a player coming back from a torn ACL. The Cowboys desperately need Melton to be ready for Week 1. He's one of the only legitimate players in their front seven.

Cowboys DT Henry Melton (groin) is going to be out at least a few days.

It doesn't sound like an overly serious pull even though Melton might sit out Saturday's preseason game. The good news is that his surgically-repaired ACL has held up fine throughout camp so far, a must for the Cowboys' anemic defense. Melton's backup is seventh-rounder Ken Bishop.

Cowboys DT Henry Melton (ACL) avoided the active/PUP list.

Melton is more than 10 months removed from his tear. His ability to participate at the outset of camp -- even in a limited capacity -- is a fantastic sign that he'll be able to contribute to a desperate Cowboys defensive front in Week 1. Melton has some deep IDP sleeper appeal as he transitions into the old Jason Hatcher 3-technique role, a spot that produced 11 sacks last year.

Cowboys DT Henry Melton (ACL surgery) is expected to be cleared for the beginning of camp.

According to reporter David Moore, the Cowboys aren't expecting any "red flags" with Melton's Wednesday physical. That was expected all along, but is still much-needed news for the Cowboys' undermanned defensive line. Melton is now 10 months removed from tearing his left ACL.
