Date:

Glover Quin will play the Ed Reed role in DC Teryl Austin's scheme.

Austin was Reed's position coach in Baltimore in 2011 and 2012. Quin will no longer play sides like he did under Gunther Cunningham, instead dropping to the deeper part of the field and reading the quarterback. It's a free safety position built for players with a nose for the ball, something Quin has shown during his five-year career. He's recorded 57 pass breakups, eight interceptions and four forced fumbles.

Lions FS Glover Quin (ankle) is expected to be ready for the start of OTAs.

Quin underwent minor ankle surgery earlier this month, but said he plans on participating in offseason workouts despite not being fully recovered. Even if Quin ends up limited in OTAs, his heath isn't a major concern. The Lions are moving Quin to free safety this season, where he'll start opposite James Ihedigbo.
Mar 29 - 5:10 PM

Lions SS Glover Quin underwent offseason ankle surgery.

It was a "small procedure to finally relieve the pain in his ankle." Quin missed some practice time during the season, his first with the Lions. He started all 16 games for the fourth consecutive season and racked up 57 tackles, two sacks and three interceptions while grading out as a top-11 safety at Pro Football Focus. Quin inked a five-year, $23.5 million deal last March.
Feb 21 - 10:04 AM

Lions SS Glover Quin (ankle) returned to practice Thursday.

Quin was in a walking boot Wednesday, but that was apparently just a precaution. He's now on track to be in the starting lineup when the Lions host the Bucs Sunday.

Lions SS Glover Quin (ankle) was spotted in a walking boot Wednesday.

Quin went down late in Sunday's loss at Pittsburgh and didn't return. His potential absence would be another concern for a Lions pass defense that is already ranked 30th in the league. Quin has graded out as ProFootballFocus' No. 19 safety among 85 qualifiers so far this year.

Lions SS Glover Quin was forced from Sunday's game against the Steelers with an ankle injury, and is questionable to return.

Quin went down midway through the fourth quarter, and appears unlikely to return. Quin is playing well this season, grading out as the No. 15 safety in Pro Football Focus' ratings.

Lions DC Gunther Cunningham has been impressed with new SS Glover Quin's offseason.

"He is something," Cunningham said. "We had a meeting the other day and I turned to (our vice president of pro personnel) and I said, ‘Quin.’ He goes, ‘Professional.’ I said, ‘That’s the best description I’ve ever heard.’ That’s him. All about business every day." With Louis Delmas' (knees) health still up in the air, the Lions are counting on Quin to anchor the back end of the defense. A 1,000-snap player for the Texans last season, Quin graded out as the No. 40 safety in Pro Football Focus' ratings.

Lions agreed to terms with SS Glover Quin on a five-year, $25 million contract.

We put "for real" in the headline because this deal was initially reported by ESPN, then withdrawn with the Texans reportedly jumping back into the mix. It's now been confirmed by Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official website. Quin, 27, is an effective run support safety whose cover skills have been overrated in some circles. He has some experience covering slot receivers, but it hasn't typically gone well. Quin did rack up 84 tackles, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles at strong safety in Houston last year. He'll be on the IDP radar as a DB2/3 with some upside behind a leaky Detroit front seven.

Updating a previous item, the Lions have not yet completed a contract agreement with free agent SS Glover Quin.

ESPN jumped the gun and has since withdrawn its initial report. The Houston Chronicle is now reporting the Texans remain "in play" to re-sign Quin, who they have desperately wanted back. Quin visited the Lions' facility on Wednesday, and it appears the sides were at least close to an agreement. Quin remains available to the highest bidder. He's expected to command $5 million per year.

Lions agreed to terms with S Glover Quin, formerly of the Texans.

Detroit continues to rake 'em in on Wednesday. Quin will replace free agent Louis Delmas in the Lions' defensive backfield, but he can also play some corner. Quin struggles in coverage a bit, but he's an above-average run defender. It's a tough loss for Houston, who wanted him back badly. Detroit has now inked Quin and cornerback Chris Houston to help shore up the back end.

NFL.com reports free agent S Glover Quin is seeking roughly $5 million per season.

It's affordable, and in line with what we expected. Quin is visiting the Lions, but could still end up back in Houston. He'd be a strong add for the DB-needy Lions, and tough loss for the Texans.

Free agent S Glover Quin will visit the Lions.

Detroit is reportedly "very" interested in the versatile Quin, who can play both corner and safety. They're also going to host LaRon Landry on a visit as they try to infuse some talent into an annually embarrassing secondary.

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com is "hearing a lot of buzz" regarding free agent SS Glover Quin and the Lions.

The Lions are linked to virtually every available safety and corner because of need, but they don't have much cap space. Quin is a name they might actually be able to afford. He won't be as costly as Dashon Goldson or Ed Reed.

CSN Houston thinks "it's possible" William Moore's deal with the Falcons will be a template for free agent Glover Quin and his agent to shoot for.

Moore inked a five-year, $30 million ($14 million guaranteed) deal with the Falcons on Saturday. Moore is eight months older than Quin, but he's also been a consistently better player. We'd expect Quin to get between $4.5 million to $5.5 million annually, as opposed to the $6 million Moore received.
