Dolphins signed DT Vaughn Martin, formerly of the Chargers.
Martin, 27, graded out as Pro Football Focus' 33rd-rated 3-4 defensive end last year, among just 34 qualifiers. (That's second to last.) PFF considered him poor in run defense and pass rush, and Martin also committed four penalties in under 500 defensive snaps. In Miami, Martin will battle Chase Alecxih and Kheeston Randall to be the top backup behind Randy Starks and Paul Soliai. Mar 28 - 11:45 AM

Free agent DE Vaughn Martin visited the Dolphins on Tuesday.

It's Martin's first known visit of free agency, though he's supposedly also drawing interest from Eagles, Lions, Saints, Patriots, and Chargers. A run-stopper, Martin made 27 starts for the Bolts the past two seasons. He'd be a reserve defensive tackle in Miami's 4-3 after playing end in San Diego's 3-4.

CBS Sports reports the Chargers are "hoping to retain" free agent DE Vaughn Martin, but are facing competition from the Eagles, Lions, Saints and Patriots.

It's Martin's first mention of free agency, though he did have talks with the Chargers early last week. There's always a strong chance it's agent-driven when a player is connected to 4-5 teams at once, but it is time for bargain-hunting clubs to begin getting more active. Martin has combined for 27 starts the past two seasons, but made just two sacks. He's a run stopper.

Free agent DE Vaughn Martin will not re-sign with the Chargers before free agency opens Tuesday afternoon.

Martin had some 11th hour talks with the Chargers, but the two sides weren't able to hammer out a deal. He hits the open market as a 3-4 end with 27 starts under his belt. Martin isn't among our top-20 defensive ends available in free agency.

The Chargers have opened contract talks with free agent DE Vaughn Martin.

Martin graded out very poorly as both a run stopper and pass rusher in Pro Football Focus' 2012 ratings. The Chargers did keep defensive coordinator John Pagano in place under new head coach Mike McCoy, so Martin has scheme familiarity. A 26-year-old out of Western Ontario, keeping Martin should be cheap.

Chargers placed DE Vaughn Martin on injured reserve with a groin injury, ending his season.

Martin went down in Sunday's win over the Steelers. The Chargers' starting right end, Martin finishes 2012 with 19 tackles and one sack in 12 games. Rookie Kendall Reyes is expected to start in his absence. In the final year of his rookie deal, Martin will be a free agent in the offseason. Whether he remains in San Diego will likely depend on if GM A.J. Smith is retained.

Chargers DE Vaughn Martin left Sunday's Week 14 game against the Steelers with a groin injury.

The depleted Chargers are now down to just four defensive linemen. Antonio Garay was a healthy scratch.

Vaughn Martin is expected to remain the Chargers' starting left end this season.

Last year's first-rounder Corey Liuget will start on the right side, and likely kick inside to rush the quarterback from the interior on nickel downs. Martin started 15 games in 2011, operating as an early-down run stuffer who came off the field on thirds. He could lose playing time to newly anointed "floater" Antonio Garay, as well as second-round pick Kendall Reyes.

Chargers DE Vaughn Martin had ankle surgery this offseason.

Martin was back on the field Tuesday for the first time since January. The 2009 fourth-round pick is a project with upside that can help at both the nose tackle and end positions.

Chargers fourth-round DE Vaughn Martin, out of the University of Western Ontario, has been a hit in training camp.

Martin, at 6'3/331, is flashing "first-step quickness and exceptional strength." He was expected to be a developmental project out of a small Canadian college, but the Chargers think he's ready to help as a rotational lineman this season.

Chargers signed fourth-round DE Vaughn Martin to a four-year contract.

Martin, out of the University of Western Ontario, was the first Canadian collegiate underclassman ever to declare for the draft. Born in Jamaica, Martin didn't take up football until 10th grade. He's an interesting developmental project.
