49ers hired ex-NFL receiver Bobby Engram as an offensive assistant.

Engram, an overachiever in his playing days, will be asked to mentor talented yet underachieving Michael Crabtree. The 14-year veteran is versed in the West Coast Offense and should help Crabtree finally unlock his potential.

Former Seahawks and Bears WR Bobby Engram is a candidate for an entry-level coaching position with the 49ers.

It's safe to close the books on the 38-year-old's 14-year NFL career. Engram racked up 650 receptions for 7,751 yards and 35 TDs, the majority coming as a slot receiver with Mike Holmgren's Seattle teams. His highest fantasy finish was 15th, just four years ago, behind a career-high 94 catches and 1,147 yards.

Browns released WR Bobby Engram.

The writing is on the wall for Engram after he couldn't make longtime pal Mike Holmgren's roster. The 37-year-old veteran may be through in the NFL.

Browns WR Bobby Engram was told by club president Mike Holmgren that he is not guaranteed a roster spot.

Engram and Mike Holmgren go back a ways, including the Super Bowl year in Seattle. But at age 37, Engram has his work cut out for him just to make the roster. Holmgren may want to keep Engram around simply to mentor young receivers Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi.

Newly signed Bobby Engram is expected to compete with Chansi Stuckey for one roster spot in Cleveland.

The winner figures to be the Browns' primary slot receiver, probably between Mohamed Massaquoi and Brian Robiskie. It's an interesting battle, as Stuckey is an Eric "Mangini guy," while Engram is a Mike Holmgren favorite.

Browns signed WR Bobby Engram.

The Browns had as much need for a veteran receiver as any team in the league, but Engram is hardly the solution. The 37-year-old lasted only five games with the receiver-needy Chiefs last season, catching just five passes. Though Engram is a favorite of team president Mike Holmgren, he's a longshot to beat out Chansi Stuckey for the slot receiver job. He's far from a lock to make the final roster.

Chiefs released WR Bobby Engram.

The Chiefs are desperate for someone to emerge with Dwayne Bowe and Engram was clearly not the answer. Engram had five catches on the season and at age 36, he has to be thinking he may be near the end of the line. The Chiefs may give Lance Long a look in the slot over Engram, who has 650 career catches.

Bobby Engram caught one pass for 12 yards in Week 2.

He only has three catches for 29 yards through two games and should be dropped in most leagues. It appears Bobby Wade could emerge as a preferred option.

Bobby Engram snagged two catches for 19 yards in Week 1.

Engram also was the punt returner after Maurice Leggett fumbled his first opportunity. Engram is a solid possession receiver who could see a good dose of balls come his way this season. Keep an eye on him whenever Matt Cassell gets back in there.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley called Bobby Engram a candidate to return punts if rookie Quinten Lawrence doesn't seize the job.

Engram has 102 career punt returns, although he has just two since 2004. Lawrence is the frontrunner currently because he's way more explosive. The Chiefs don't yet view their sixth-round pick as an option to play wide receiver.

The Chiefs' addition of Amani Toomer won't affect Bobby Engram's role on offense.

Engram was signed to play the slot and will keep that job in three-wideout sets. Toomer was added to either motivate Mark Bradley and Devard Darling, or push them out of the lineup altogether. All three are competing to start.

Matt Cassel and Bobby Engram "seem to have found a rhythm" on the practice field early in training camp.

Engram called Cassel "spot-on" and said the new franchise QB reminds him of "the great ones." If he can stay healthy at age 36, Engram could threaten for 50-60 catches as the slot man in Todd Haley's spread-like offense.

Chiefs signed WR Bobby Engram, formerly of the Seahawks.

Engram, 36, caught 47 balls for 489 yards in a woeful Seattle passing attack last season. He probably only has a year left, but if healthy could be a 60-catch slot receiver in Kansas City's shotgun-heavy offense. Engram won't attract double teams, but he'll draw some attention off Dwayne Bowe and Tony Gonzalez, and give Matt Cassel a "security blanket" inside the numbers.

The Chiefs let free agent Bobby Engram leave KC without a contract Tuesday.

They probably were only offering the veteran's minimum. Engram was pretty good a couple years ago, but he's a major injury risk and recently turned 36.
