The Lions signed S Don Carey to a three-year extension at some point during the 2013 regular season.
The deal was never reported by the media, but the NFLPA database has Carey under Detroit's control through 2016. He was previously only signed through 2013. Although Carey has been a liability when pressed into action at safety and slot corner, he's contributed 21 special teams tackles the past two seasons. Jan 7 - 7:37 AM

Lions re-signed signed S Don Carey to a one-year, $630,000 extension through 2013.

Carey was scheduled to become a restricted free agent this offseason. He was signed on the first day of November with the Detroit secondary experiencing a slew of injuries. Carey, 26 in February, then started six games down the stretch and recorded two interceptions with five pass break-ups. The Lions would likely prefer him to be a third safety and special teams player in 2013.

Carey was on injured reserve after being waived/injured last Monday. A special teamer and reserve safety for the Lions last season, Carey is just two years removed from starting 10 games for the Jaguars. He could draw interest as a mid-season special teams fill-in.

Normally a cornerback, Jaguars DB Don Carey saw "about 30 snaps at safety" in Week 5, according to coach Jack Del Rio.

"Don has done a nice job in his increased role," Del Rio said. "We're looking to develop. We feel like we've made some strides in that area." Added Carey, "The more you can do, the better. Finally got a shot to get in the game, it felt good."

2009 sixth-round pick Don Carey ran with the Jaguars' first-team defense in place of disgruntled CB Rashean Mathis at Monday's OTA.

Carey, whom the Jaguars stole off waivers from the Browns last summer, spent his first year on injured reserve. Assuming Mathis regains his starting spot by Week 1, Carey looks to have an inside track on the nickel back job.

Don Carey and Scott Starks are the leading contenders for the Jaguars' nickel back job, according Vic Ketchman of the team's official site.

Rashean Mathis and Derek Cox form an up-and-coming starting corner duo, but the depth in the secondary has to be a major concern. Starks is always hurt and Carey is a project out of Norfolk State.

Jaguars placed CB Don Carey (shoulder) on injured reserve, ending his season.

One league source called the Jaguars' claiming of injured CB Don Carey off waivers from the Browns "unethical."

The source believes there's some sort of protocol the Jags didn't abide by. While the Browns didn't expect it to happen, they took the risk and paid for it. Carey is a promising young talent. He's going to miss the season due to shoulder surgery, but will have good shot at a roster spot in 2010.
