Titans S Al Afalava will miss 2-3 weeks with a high-ankle sprain.

Primarily a special teamer, Afalava played 36 snaps on defense Sunday. He'll be a candidate for injured reserve if he ends up healing behind schedule.

Colts waived or released S Al Afalava, DE John Chick, LB Chris Colasanti, DT John Gill, S Michael Hamlin, CB Brandon King, LB Kerry Neal, DT Ollie Ogbu, LB Nate Triplett, LB Vuna Tuihalamaka.

Afalava appeared in just four games a season ago after starting 13 as a rookie for the Bears in 2009. Not talented enough to be a start, Afalava's NFL future (if he has one) is on special teams.

Colts signed S Al Afalava.

A 13-game starter with the Bears last year, Afalava has been out of the league since cut-down day in early September. He'll add depth while concentrating primarily on special teams.

Bengals worked out free agent S Al Afalva, DT Dre Moore, NT Tank Tyler, and C Nick Leckey this week.

The Bengals had a host of free agents coming through on their bye week. Afalava, a 13-game starter for the Bears last season, has garnered little interest since being cut in early September.

Bears waived S Al Afalava.

Afalava, a starter for 13 games last season, was beaten out by veteran Josh Bullocks for the final safety spot. The 2009 sixth-rounder isn't a starting caliber player, but he should garner interest as a backup.

Bears SS Al Afalava's roster spot could be in jeopardy.

It's an abrupt fall for a guy that started 13 games as a rookie last season. Afalava appears to have fallen behind Josh Bullocks as the fifth safety and the Bears are likely to keep Craig Steltz due to his special teams ability.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Bears S Al Afalava is still recovering from nerve damage in the shoulder he injured last season.

The injury cost him three games, but isn't expected to affect Afalava's status for training camp. A spot starter as a rookie, Afalava finished 2009 with 53 tackles and a pair of sacks. He'll be Chris Harris' backup this season.

Bears SS Al Afalava did not need an MRI on his injured shoulder, after all.

"It's good," Afalava said. "There is a chance I will play (in Week 10)." Kevin Payne would start if Afalava can't. Afalava has been a weak IDP option.

Bears SS Al Afalava will undergo an MRI on his injured right shoulder Monday.

Afalava said his arm "went numb" after he missed a tackle against Arizona in Sunday's loss. The rookie starter is averaging 4.5 tackles per game.

Bears S Al Afalava left Sunday's game against the Cardinals with a shoulder injury and will not return.

The Bears also lost Charles Tillman to a shoulder injury, so two members of their starting secondary are out. The severity of Afalava's injury is unknown.

Rookie Al Afalava started the Bears' opener at strong safety, with Kevin Payne at free safety.

It may have only been because Danieal Manning missed most of August. Manning wound up with the most production anyway, notching six solo stops and a sack. He'll probably either resume nickel back duties or start at free safety in Week 2. Chicago has to get oft-burned RCB Nate Vasher off the field.

Beat writer Brad Biggs believes that sixth-round pick Al Afalava has the "inside track" on the Bears' starting strong safety job.

It doesn't say much for Craig Steltz. Afalava was effective against the run in Chicago's preseason opener, sniffing out plays and recording six tackles. If he wins the strong-side job, Kevin Payne will start on the free side.

Bears signed sixth-round S Al Afalava to a four-year contract.

Afalava (5'11/213) was a three-year starter at Oregon State, offering good size and instincts but struggling in coverage. He's likely slated for special teams duty if he makes the final roster.
