Lions LB Zack Follett (neck) was a full participant as the team opened training camp on Friday.

Follett's neck injury was originally believed to be degenerative and career-threatening, but he's received full medical clearance. "I never thought I'd have a helmet on again," he conceded. "This is a big blessing, and I'm very thankful." Follett will compete for a backup job and on special teams.

According to MLive.com's Tom Kowalski, there are "some indications" that Lions LB Zack Follett (neck) is hoping to play in 2011.

Follett said in January that his career was essentially over thanks to his degenerative neck ailment, but has apparently found some optimism. If he can pass a physical, he'd have a decent chance at making the Lions as a reserve linebacker/special teamer.

Lions extended an exclusive rights tender to LB Zack Follett.

Follett is just a third-year player, so the offer will stand up under the next CBA. Though a neck injury may keep him from ever playing again, Follett is planning to attend training camp as long as he clears one more series of tests. Doctors have told Follett that his condition can only get worse. There is plenty of risk involved in a return.

Lions WLB Zack Follett (neck) is not expected to play football again.

Follett admitted as much in an online video posted after he took undeserved potshots at Matthew Stafford and Jay Cutler on a radio show. A seventh-round draft pick in 2009, Follett's career will end after 31 tackles and five starts.

The Lions are "optimistic" that WLB Zack Follett (neck) will be able to play football in 2011.

"Any time you're talking about necks and backs, there's going to be a certain amount of gray area so to speak," coach Jim Schwartz said. "We don't have any reason not to be optimistic. It probably makes a little more sense not to put it on the radar screen for this year."

Lions placed WLB Zack Follett (neck) on injured reserve, ending his season.

The Lions are getting back MLB DeAndre Levy, but at the same time losing another starting linebacker. Follett visited a neck specialist Tuesday, and the results obviously weren't positive. He finishes the season with 21 tackles in five games. Ashlee Palmer will take over at weak-side linebacker.

Lions WLB Zack Follett (neck/shoulder) is scheduled to visit a spine specialist on Thursday.

Coach Jim Schwartz indicated Tuesday that it was too early to call it a long-term concern. He'll have a better idea on Follett's status by Friday. The Lions were initially hopeful that Follett could return for this week's game, but that doesn't seem likely.

Lions WLB Zack Follett has been released from the hospital after being diagnosed with only a "stinger" after taking a vicious hit while covering a kickoff in the team's Week 6 loss to the Giants.

Follett could even return to the starting lineup after the Lions' Week 7 bye. Detroit should get quite a bit healthier during the off week. Coach Jim Schwartz also expressed hope that DeAndre Levy (ankle, groin) would return.

The Hackensack Medical Center released a statement on Lions WLB Zack Follett's neck injury following Sunday's loss to the Giants.

Follett was covering a kickoff when he collided helmet-to-helmet with a Giants special teamer. "There is no evidence at this point of a fracture of the cervical spine," reads the statement. "He has movement in all four extremities. Zack will remain here tonight and will continue to undergo extensive tests and evaluation." Follett likely was concussed, but he thankfully appears to have avoided a serious injury.

Lions WLB Zack Follett is questionable for Week 3 due to a concussion.

Week 2 wasn't a good one for Detroit linebackers, with Follett getting hurt and Julian Peterson benched. The Lions have next to no depth at the position, making an easy matchup even easier for the Vikings' Adrian Peterson.

Lions WLB Zach Follett has reportedly "not caught up to the speed of first-team action."

Follett has been slow to react to some plays and has not been able to translate his energy from special teams into his play on defense. He'll open the season as the starter, but he's not going to be a target in IDP leagues.
