Chiefs placed TE Jake O'Connell (ankle) on injured reserve, ending his season.

O'Connell is primarily used as a blocking specialist. He registered three catches for 18 yards on the season and will be a free agent at the end of the year. Kansas City signed OL Rich Ranglin from the practice squad to take O'Connell's roster spot.

The Kansas City Star says that TE Jake O'Connell is "in a fight for his roster spot."

The Chiefs added Kevin Boss this offseason and Tony Moeaki (knee) is tentatively expected to be ready for Week 1. O'Connell had seven catches for 52 yards in eight games played last season.

Chiefs TE Jake O'Connell has caught fire in practice recently, according to KCChiefs.com's Josh Looney.

O'Connell has scored three TDs over the last three days, with each score "going down as highlight material." Rookie Tony Moeaki will be the Chiefs' primary pass-catching tight end, but O'Connell can provide athletic depth.

Chiefs signed seventh-round TE Jake O'Connell to a three-year contract.

O'Connell recorded 25 receptions for 258 yards as a Miami (Ohio) senior. Blessed with above average speed and hands, he's in the mix to replace Tony Gonzalez. Expect Brad Cottam to win the job, but O'Connell may immediately be No. 2 on the depth chart.
