Former Vikings RB Albert Young has accepted an assistant coaching position with the University of Colorado.
We assume this means Young has played his final NFL down. An undrafted free agent out of Iowa in 2008, Young appeared in 10 games for the Vikings between 2009-10, carrying the ball 25 times for 82 yards. He made it to final cuts with the Jaguars last year, but drew no interest following the start of the regular season. Mon, Jul 9, 2012 04:18:00 PM

Jaguars waived RB Albert Young.

Young, signed on August 23, gained 21 yards on three preseason carries to go with two receptions. He was outlasted on the roster by UDFA RB DuJuan Harris.

Jaguars signed RB Albert Young, formerly of the Vikings.

Young is a former undrafted free agent that was a healthy scratch for most of last season. He won't threaten Rashad Jennings and is no lock to stick on the Jags' final 53.

The Vikings did not tender exclusive rights free agent RB Albert Young.

Talked up all last offseason by the Vikes as a replacement for Chester Taylor, Young unsurprisingly fell well short of that expectation. He averaged 2.2 yards per carry and proved himself to be no better than a camp body type.

Vikings placed RB Albert Young (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.

It's believed that Young sustained a knee sprain on a career-high 10 carries while running out the clock in garbage time against the Bills. A healthy scratch for most of the season, Young is a longshot to return to the Vikings in 2011.

Vikings waived/injured RB Albert Young.

Young was talked up as Chester Taylor's replacement on third downs this past offseason, but he lacks NFL play-making ability. He sustained an undisclosed injury in Week 13, so he'll end up on I.R. if he clears waivers. Lorenzo Booker will replace him on the Vikes' roster.

Vikings declared RB Albert Young, CB Cedric Griffin, CB Chris Cook, DT Jimmy Kennedy, QB Joe Webb, OL Chris DeGeare, TE Mickey Shuler and DL Everson Griffen inactive for Week 2 against the Dolphins.

Young was active in the opener, but returns to the sidelines with Toby Gerhart healthy enough to back up Adrian Peterson.

Albert Young rushed three times for just two yards and added two receptions for 11 yards against the Saints in Week 1.

Young saw some action on third downs early in the game, but the drop in talent from Adrian Peterson was striking. Don't expect him to remain a factor once Toby Gerhart (ankle) gets back to full health.

Albert Young has reportedly emerged as the Vikings' best running back in blitz protection, earning the nickname "Little Chester (Taylor)."

The problem is that Young isn't an NFL-caliber rusher, managing 16 yards on 13 preseason carries. If he's in the game, it will be obvious to defenses that the Vikes are going to pass. The job is there for Adrian Peterson to take, and we expect him to. He's the team's smoothest receiving back, and improved his blitz pickups in last week's game against the Seahawks.

Albert Young got just five snaps with the first unit on Saturday and has apparently fallen behind Toby Gerhart on the depth chart.

Gerhart got 18 snaps with the first unit. Beat writer Tom Pelissero suggests that Young's only role may be as a third-and-long back, a job for which the Vikings may not have space on the roster.

Albert Young remains ahead of rookie Toby Gerhart on the depth chart, and he's also considered the front-runner for third-down duties.

Don't read too much into this. Young is ahead of Gerhart because of his familiarity with the offense. Gerhart will catch and likely pass him by Week 1. Adrian Peterson is expected to player a bigger role on third-down and in the two-minute drill, but the Vikes may also use passing downs to give him an occasional breather.

Albert Young is believed to be the early front-runner for the Vikings' No. 3 tailback job.

His competition is Ian Johnson, Darius Reynaud, and Ryan Moats. With Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart locked into the Nos. 1-2 spots and both capable of playing all three downs, scraps will be left for the No. 3 job winner.

Coach Brad Childress reiterated that he'd be OK with Albert Young as the Vikings' No. 2 back, but admits he's always looking to see what's out there.

It wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement for Young, who went undrafted out of Iowa in 2008. Although the Vikings lost out on LaDainian Tomlinson and don't want Brian Westbrook, Young will face competition for the gig. The Vikings could end up turning to the draft for Adrian Peterson's backup.

Vikings coach Brad Childress suggested Albert Young could get a crack at the third-down role if LaDainian Tomlinson isn't signed.

"Albert Young has been a guy that's developed here tremendously the last two years," said Childress. "Brett Favre and I had a long conversation about him. He believes he's got the chance to be a good back in this league." Actions speak louder than words, though. The Vikes wouldn't be recruiting a broken down Tomlinson if they truly believed Young was the answer.

Albert Young has made the Vikings and will be their No. 3 running back.

Ian Johnson was cut Saturday, leaving Young as the man if anything happens to Adrian Peterson or Chester Taylor. Keep in mind the No. 3 back last year, Maurice Hicks, didn't get a single carry.
