Mulligan spent 2013 blocking for the Patriots. He has 16 catches through 65 career games. He'll block and play special teams for the Bears.

He must've looked good in Monday's workout. Mulligan would be a nice addition for a team in need of a true in-line tight end after giving Jake Ballard the heave-ho at final cuts. He can run block and contribute on special teams.

Mulligan played roughly 40 percent of the Jets' 2011 offensive snaps, earning derision for too many penalties. The tender would have cost the Jets $1.3 million, a figure they are unwilling to pay for a backup blocking specialist. Mulligan could be brought back at a lower salary down the road.
