Bears signed S Tom Nelson to a reserve/future contract.
Nelson, 26, did not play in 2012 after being waived/injured by the Eagles in training camp with a high-ankle sprain. He played in 24 career games with the Bengals and Eagles from 2009-11. Nelson will bring special teams help to the Bears if he makes the team. Jan 29 - 4:23 PM

Eagles waived/injured S Tom Nelson.

Nelson suffered a high-ankle sprain in the Eagles' second preseason game, and was behind Jaiquawn Jarrett for the backup safety job. The Eagles also waived or released WR Elvis Akpla, DB Wade Bonner, DE Xavier Brown, WR Brian Hernandez, WR McKay Jacobson, WR Tiger Jones, and RG Alfred McCullough.

He'll take S Colt Anderson's place on the roster after Philadelphia's standout special teamer was sent to injured reserve. Nelson saw time in the Bengals secondary last season, but should be limited to special teams in Philly.

Bengals S Tom Nelson (ankle) has been cleared to return to practice from the PUP list.

Nelson is on a 21-day roster exemption after spending the first six weeks on the PUP list. He can practice without being counted against the 53-man roster. Nelson faces an uphill battle for playing time.

Bengals placed S Tom Nelson (ankle) on the reserve/PUP list.

Nelson is still not back to full health after his 2009 season ended early with ankle injury. He was a longshot to make the final roster regardless after the Bengals added Adam Jones and Brandon Ghee to the secondary.

The Bengals have significantly improved the depth in their secondary by adding veterans Pacman Jones and Gibril Wilson as well as third-rounder Brandon Ghee. Nelson will have to battle for his roster spot this year.

With backup safeties Tom Nelson and Chinedum Ndukwe both inconsistent, beat writer Joe Reedy speculates the Bengals will use their first-round pick on the position.

Chris Crocker and Roy Williams are the starters, but they are both over 30. Texas' Earl Thomas is expected to be off the board by the time the Bengals pick (No. 21 overall), but Southern Cal's Taylor Mays should be there. Even if a rookie doesn't unseat Williams right away, they need a long-term upgrade.

Bengals S Tom Nelson left Sunday's game with a left knee injury and will not return.

Nelson was taken to the locker room just before halftime for further examination. He had been filling in for usual starter Chris Crocker.
