The lowest tender costs just $1.323 million, but also means the Packers won't receive draft-pick compensation for the former undrafted free agent if he signs an offer sheet elsewhere and they don't match. Dietrich-Smith took over for Jeff Saturday down the stretch last season. He's made nine career starts.

The Packers met with restricted free agent C Evan Dietrich-Smith's agent at the Combine.

Beat writer Tyler Dunne takes it as a sign Green Bay is "ready to make Dietrich-Smith their center of the future with a long-term deal." There was no doubt the Pack would tender Dietrich-Smith a contract, but it appears they have faith in him as a long-term option after he replaced struggling veteran Jeff Saturday down the stretch last season. Dietrich-Smith turns 27 in July.

Packers restricted free agent Evan Dietrich-Smith is expect to be the starting center in 2013.

Dietrich-Smith took over for veteran Jeff Saturday late last season and never looked back. Now Saturday has retired, leaving no real competition for the job. Expect the Packers to retain Dietrich-Smith via a second-round, $2.023 million tender.

Evan Dietrich-Smith - G - Packers

Seahawks claimed G/C Evan Dietrich-Smith off waivers from the Packers and DB Nate Ness off waivers from the Dolphins.

Ness is a safety/corner, but will focus on special teams. Dietrich-Smith was in Green Bay last year with current Seahawks GM John Schneider. The Idaho State alum has the athleticism necessary for zone blocking.
