Police have confirmed that Chiefs LB Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend and then committed suicide Saturday morning.
Belcher shot his girlfriend at a residence about five miles away from Arrowhead Stadium. The couple's 3-month-old daughter and the girlfriend's mother were also there. Belcher proceeded to drive to Arrowhead, where teammates noticed him distraught in his car. They informed GM Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel, who called police and went to talk to Belcher. Before turning the gun on himself, Belcher thanked Pioli and Crennel for everything they had done for him. He was 25 years old. As of now, Sunday's 1 p.m. ET game between the Chiefs and Panthers at Arrowhead is scheduled to go on as planned. Sat, Dec 1, 2012 02:25:00 PM

Citing a source, Jason La Canfora of CBS has identified Jovan Belcher as the Chiefs player involved in the shooting at team facilities.

Reports say Chiefs coaches confronted Belcher in the parking lot before he put the gun to his head and committed suicide. The Kansas City Police Department added that Belcher thanked coach Romeo Crennel and GM Scott Pioli before pulling the trigger, and neither of the Chiefs officials felt threatened with his life.

Chiefs ILB Jovan Belcher (groin) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Falcons.

Belcher was held out of practice on Thursday and was limited on Friday. It's not a huge blow if he doesn't suit up, as the Chiefs expect to deploy a lot of nickel and dime packages against the Falcons high-powered pass attack. A two-down thumper, Belcher comes off the field for a defensive back in the subpackages.

Chiefs signed restricted free agent ILB Jovan Belcher to a one-year, $1.927 million contract.

A run-thumping complement to playmaker Derrick Johnson, Belcher has averaged 85.5 tackles as a starter for Romeo Crennel the past two years. He could be a candidate for a long-term contract, as the Chiefs love his hard-nosed attitude.

Chiefs tendered restricted free agent ILB Jovan Belcher at the second-round level.

A starter each of the past two years, Belcher racked up 87 tackles in 2011. A run-stopping specialist, he graded out negatively as a pass rusher and in coverage by Pro Football Focus last season.

Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson attributes a major portion of his success the past two years to playing next to "thumper" Jovan Belcher.

"Probably half of my tackles come from Jovan blowing somebody up and I'm scraping over the top," Johnson said. Added coach Todd Haley, "He's one, in my opinion, that has done nothing but make progress." Just five tackles shy of 100 himself, Belcher is second only to Johnson, who is on pace to shatter Mike Maslowski's single-season franchise record.

ESPN.com's Bill Williamson and Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson believe the Chiefs have found a "gem" in ILB Jovan Belcher.

Belcher was primarily a special teamer as an undrafted rookie in 2009. He graduated to full-time starter in 2010, racking up 84 tackles. "He's a heavier guy who is a good banger in the 3-4 defense," Matt Williamson said. "He seems like a hard-nosed guy who has made the best of opportunity." Expect Belcher to remain in the same role next season.
