Trent Dilfer announced his retirement from football.
Dilfer says he planned to retire before injuring his Achilles playing basketball recently. He had a reputation as a "game manager," but played excellent football throughout Baltimore's Super Bowl run in 2000. Dilfer finished his career with a 113:129 TD to INT ratio. He was the No. 6 overall pick in 1994 and threw 21 touchdowns in back-to-back years in 1997 and 1998, but ultimately had a journeyman career. He still may be the best QB in Ravens history. Dilfer will likely move on to an analyst role and excel at it. Wed, Jul 9, 2008 04:26:00 PM

Free agent QB Trent Dilfer suffered an Achilles tendon injury recently while playing basketball.

Dilfer, whose season ended early last season following a serious concussion, tore his right Achilles tendon back in 2002. He was recently forced to drop out of the American Century Championship golf tournament and won't be able to golf for four months. When timeframes are measured in terms of golf rather than football, it's probably time to call it a career and start lining up as one of the better analysts around.

The Raiders are expected to begin searching for a backup quarterback to compete with Andrew Walter.

Trent Dilfer remains a candidate, and Daunte Culpepper is still hanging around. More likely the team is hovering around the Buccaneers' roster like a vulture, waiting see which of their seven quarterbacks get dumped before training camp.

Free agent Trent Dilfer told the congregation at Northside Christian Church in Fresno Sunday that the Raiders have shown interest in him.

Dilfer played his college ball at Fresno State and heard some cheers from the audience. The Raiders haven't been very active trying to find a backup for JaMarcus Russell. Dilfer has proven a good tutor of young quarterbacks.

49ers released Trent Dilfer.

The 49ers already have four quarterbacks on their squad, and Dilfer - who was due a $500,000 roster bonus on Saturday - was clearly not a part of the team's plans. Dilfer was considering retirement after suffering a concussion in Week 14, and it's quite possible he'll be lining up next to Rich Eisen and company on the NFL network next season.

Trent Dilfer plans to made a decision on retirement by mid-March.

Dilfer, who suffered a serious concussion towards the end of last season, seemed fine working as an NFL Network analyst. Staying on television would probably be his best long-term option.

Trent Dilfer is undecided about whether he'll play football in 2008.

The 49ers are expected to push Dilfer into retirement this offseason, but he shouldn't need much encouragement. Dilfer is a tremendous analyst of the game and his performance on the field in 2007 showed he has little to offer an NFL team. He also can give one mean scouting report on Tony Romo.

Trent Dilfer has been ruled out for Week 17, effectively ending his season.

Dilfer finished with a 51.6 completion rate and a miserable 5.3 yards per attempt average in seven games before his Week 14 concussion. Barring a coaching change that might shake things up in San Francisco, he's expected to be back next season. Dilfer is slated to bring in $1.5 million in 2008.

49ers coach Mike Nolan confirmed Monday that Trent Dilfer (concussion) is likely out for Week 15. Shaun Hill is next in line to start.

Dilfer needed to be hospitalized Sunday night after being concussed and could be out indefinitely. The 49ers figure to call up Drew Olson from the practice squad to back up Hill. Alex Smith (shoulder) won't be available.

49ers coach Mike Nolan was going to bench Trent Dilfer in favor of Shaun Hill even before Dilfer was concussed on Sunday.

Dilfer had completed 7-of-19 passes for just 45 yards and a passer rating of 23.4 before getting injured. He had thrown four interceptions the previous week. That the 49ers are now starting Hill should ensure the Patriots (who have the 49ers pick) get a top-five selection in April's draft.

The 49ers confirmed that Trent Dilfer was concussed and had to be hospitalized after taking a hit from Vikings CB Charles Gordon Sunday.

Dilfer went to the hospital for "observation," according to coach Mike Nolan, who described his quarterback as "a little woozy." Dilfer is considered doubtful to play in Week 15 vs. Cincinnati, making Shaun Hill likely to start.
