49ers SS C.J. Spillman has been working with the first-team defense during Organized Team Activities.

Spillman is primarily a special teamer, but could be used as a complement to Donte Whitner on passing downs. "We’ve had time to have a full spring with him," DB coach Ed Donatell said. "He’s more mature as a professional, he’s done a great job with our special teams and he's looking to increase his role."

49ers re-signed S C.J. Spillman to a three-year, $6 million contract.

The deal contains $1.8 million guaranteed. The Niners skipped over Spillman's restricted free agency to get him under contract through 2014. Spillman, 26 in May, led San Francisco with 19 special teams tackles in 2011 and has 36 over the past two seasons. On defense, Spillman is a backup strong safety.

49ers extended S C.J. Spillman an extensive rights free agent tender.

Spillman racked up an 17 tackles in kickoff and punt coverage in 13 special teams appearances last season. That sort of production wins roster spots, even for defensive backs like Spillman who lack value at safety or corner.

49ers claimed S C.J. Spillman off waivers from the Chargers.

Spillman struggled on special teams with the Chargers early this season. The Niners will see if they can redeem him in a similar role. The Browns also put in a claim on Spillman.

Chargers waived S C.J. Spillman.

The second-year undrafted free agent was struggling on special teams and didn't contribute on defense, so he was never going to last long in San Diego.
