The Miami Herald confirms Dannell Ellerbe will be the Dolphins' starting middle linebacker, replacing Karlos Dansby.
Dansby was run out of town despite amassing 134 tackles (101 solo) and nine pass breakups last season while playing through a biceps tear. Dolphins agreed to terms with LB Dannell Ellerbe, formerly of the Ravens, on a five-year, $35 million contract.

It's a terrible loss for the Ravens, who wanted badly to re-sign Ellerbe as the heir to Ray Lewis. They just weren't willing to overpay Ellerbe. Fins GM Jeff Ireland clearly was. It's uncertain where Ellerbe will play in Miami, but one guess is the strong side, where he could match up with tight ends in coverage. Kevin Burnett is 30 years old, and the Dolphins can save over $3 million by releasing him. Weak-side linebacker Koa Misi is in the final year of his rookie deal, and that's another potential playing spot for Ellerbe.

The Rams have expressed interest in free agent LB Dannell Ellerbe.

An inside linebacker in Baltimore, Ellerbe would be a strong-side linebacker in St. Louis with Jo-Lonn Dunbar on the weak side. SAM linebackers typically cost much less than the $6 million per year Ellerbe is known to be targeting.

NFL Network's Albert Breer reports the Ravens plan to huddle with free agent ILB Dannell Ellerbe on Tuesday morning.

Breer confirms Ellerbe is Baltimore's "top priority" among in-house free agents, and the Ravens plan on "putting their best foot forward" in tomorrow's contract talks. Trading Anquan Boldin cleared a large chunk of salary cap space, enough for the club to retain Ellerbe. We expect these sides to reunite.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Browns have been in contact with free agent ILB Dannell Ellerbe.

The Browns are expected to be among the most active teams in free agency, and have expressed interest in signing Ellerbe, as well as other Ravens free agents OLB Paul Kruger and CB Cary Williams. Ellerbe would be an ideal fit in Ray Horton's 3-4 defense. He's believed to be seeking $6 million annually.

The Baltimore Sun says there is "speculation" free agent ILB Dannell Ellerbe wants $6 million annually, and the Ravens are prepared to offer $5 million.

This falls in line with what we've heard on Ellerbe this month. He's expected to seek a multi-year deal in the range of $25-30 million. Beat writer Mike Preston says the Browns have "privately" shown interest in Ellerbe, as well as other Ravens free agents OLB Paul Kruger and CB Cary Williams.

The player rep for free agent ILB Dannell Ellerbe says the Ravens have yet to make his client a contract offer.

"There's nothing to report right now," said the agent. The Baltimore Sun reported the Ravens were poised to make Ellerbe a "significant offer," but it hasn't come across the wire. Ellerbe fully expects to reach Tuesday's open market.

Free agent ILB Dannell Ellerbe does not anticipate re-signing with the Ravens before midnight's commencement of the negotiating period.

"Starting Saturday, we'll be talking to all 32 teams," Ellerbe's agent said. 27-year-old Ellerbe is the top inside linebacker available in free agency, in what otherwise is a very poor class at the position. The Ravens want Ellerbe back, but he's intent on shopping his wares and maxing out his worth.

The Ravens remain in talks with free agent ILB Dannell Ellerbe, and are expected to make him a "significant" offer before the start of free agency.

Ellerbe continues to insist he wants to remain in Baltimore. "There's always a chance, and that's what I'm hoping will happen," Ellerbe said. "The Ravens are a perfect situation for me. Hopefully, it's a perfect situation for me to sign on the dotted line." The interest is mutual, but Ellerbe heads an underwhelming market for inside linebackers. He could get too rich for the cap-strapped Ravens' blood.

The Ravens aren't expected to use the franchise tag ahead of Monday's 4PM ET deadline.

The Ravens freed up the tag by agreeing to terms on a long-term deal with Joe Flacco, but won't slap it on any of their other impending free agents. ILB Dannell Ellerbe, OLB Paul Kruger and Ed Reed were candidates on paper. It's quite possible the Ravens will get out-bid on all three in free agency.

Ellerbe, 27, is part of a weak inside linebacker free-agent market, and he's coming off a season where he filled in admirably for the injured Ray Lewis. The Ravens are expected to turn their attention to Ellerbe now that Joe Flacco's deal is done, but beat writer Mike Preston says if Ellerbe wants that kind of cash, Baltimore should let him go. He's a fine player versus the run.

The two sides met at the Combine, and talks reportedly "went well." Although they'll have conversations again this week, it's still unlikely that a deal will be struck until the Joe Flacco situation has been handled. Ellerbe, 27, currently checks in as our No. 2 free-agent inside linebacker.

The Ravens conducted a breakfast meeting Friday with unrestricted free agent ILB Dannell Ellerbe's agent, Hadley Engelhard, who said the meeting "went well."

"They're obviously focusing on the short-term on the Flacco issue first," Engelhard said. "The next focal point is Dannell. Hopefully, it will work out. We plan on meeting many, many times between now and free agency." With Ray Lewis retiring, the Ravens have a void in the middle of their defense that Ellerbe would fill. However, he's expected to draw heavy interest on the open market following his breakout 2012 season.

The Ravens seem to have moved on from free agent Paul Kruger already, and fellow free agents Cary Williams and Bryant McKinnie are lower than Flacco and Ellerbe on the totem pole. "They're focusing on the Flacco issue," Ellerbe's agent, Harvey Engelhard, acknowledged. "The next focal point is Dannell."
