The Post-Gazette believes Isaac Redman is ahead of Jonathan Dwyer right now.
Dwyer was reportedly placed on the trade block right after the Steelers took Michigan State workhorse Le'Veon Bell in the second round. Redman, a long-time favorite of coach Mike Tomlin, appears likely to stick as the early-down backup. Known at one time by the nickname "Red Zone," Redman has scored just five rushing touchdowns over his three NFL seasons. May 1 - 10:33 AM

Steelers re-signed restricted free agent Isaac Redman to a one-year, $1.323 million contract.

Redman, 28, rushed 110 times for just 410 yards and two touchdowns last season. After showing flashes in a change-of-pace, third-down role, "Red" was unable to sustain that success when given an opportunity to be the feature back. The Steelers have made it no secret they intend on adding competition at running back through the draft.

Coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged that the Steelers still must upgrade at running back before the season.

Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman are currently Pittsburgh's top two running backs, but they'll face camp battles -- likely from a high-drafted rookie -- to maintain their spots atop the depth chart. "Obviously, we need to add to the pool of talent we have at that position," Tomlin said. The Steelers would appear to be the favorites to land Alabama's Eddie Lacy, quite possibly at No. 17 overall.

Isaac Redman rushed six times for 26 yards and added one reception for 11 yards against the Browns in Week 17.

As we suggested throughout the summer, Redman was exposed as a role player lacking playmaking ability when the Steelers handed him the starting job out of training camp. Although a fine third-down back and goal-line option, Redman should never see double-digit touches in a game. A restricted free agent in 2013, Redman finished the season with 110 carries, 410 yards (3.72 YPC), 19 receptions, 244 yards, and two touchdowns.

Isaac Redman was limited to three carries for four yards in Sunday's loss to the Bengals.

Redman played in his usual supporting role behind Jonathan Dwyer, but the Steelers couldn't get anything going against the Bengals' defense, and the majority of his snaps were in blitz-pickup on third downs. Rashard Mendenhall returned this week after a team imposed one-game suspension and led the Steelers in rushing. Redman is averaging just 3.8 yards-per-carry in 13 games (five starts) this season.

Isaac Redman rushed three times for 30 yards in Pittsburgh's Week 15 loss to the Cowboys, adding one catch for 14 yards.

It was a nice day for Redman in a change-of-pace role, but he appeared to tweak his foot/ankle on a 22-yard run up the sideline near the end of the third quarter. He checked in for a four-yard gain three plays later, but wasn't seen the rest of the afternoon even though the game was tight and Jonathan Dwyer was struggling. Redman has struggled through ankle issues for much of the season. His status will likely be updated Monday.

Coach Mike Tomlin expects Isaac Redman to continue to "supplement" starting RB Jonathan Dwyer.

"Red is capable of distinguishing himself in situational football, short yardage," said Tomlin. "He's a good blitz-pickup guy." Redman has no fantasy value as the third-down back. He can be dropped in 12-team leagues.

Isaac Redman bounced back from his rough Week 12 effort in Pittsburgh's Week 13 win over the Ravens, rushing nine times for 43 yards.

The Steelers stayed true to their word, using Jonathan Dwyer as a workhorse early. However, they returned to a two-back rotation after Dwyer entered halftime with 10 touches for just 27 yards. Dwyer saw the rock nine times over the final two quarters to Redman's seven. Redman carried the ball four times on Pittsburgh's final series, with Dwyer getting the ball only twice. This very much remains a "hot-hand" backfield, with Dwyer maintaining a slight edge for fantasy purposes.

Isaac Redman rushed two times for seven yards and lost a fumble in the Steelers' Week 12 loss to the Browns.

Rashard Mendenhall started and was benched after a fumble on his second carry. Next up was Jonathan Dwyer, who lost a fumble as well. Then Redman got his chance and coughed the ball up on a third-down draw play. This entire backfield is hands off against the Ravens in Week 13.

Isaac Redman (concussion) is practicing in full this week.

Redman passed the NFL's concussion protocol and was back in practice on Wednesday. He'll be active in Week 12, but is now the low man on the totem pole in Pittsburgh. With Rashard Mendenhall and Jonathan Dwyer getting a bulk of the work, Redman won't be a fantasy factor.

Isaac Redman (concussion) will practice Wednesday.

Redman has passed his "impact" test. He'll likely be limited in practice, but it's a sign that he'll be active for a bit role behind Rashard Mendenhall and Jonathan Dwyer against the Browns Sunday.

Coach Mike Tomlin believes Isaac Redman (concussion) can play in Sunday's game against the Browns.

Redman is already performing well in the early stages of his concussion testing. But with Rashard Mendenhall and Jonathan Dwyer healthy, there's not much room to operate here. Redman is least talented man in this three-headed monster.

Isaac Redman was forced from Pittsburgh's Week 11 game against the Ravens with a concussion.

Redman departed early in the second quarter. Part of a three-man backfield along with Rashard Mendenhall and Jonathan Dwyer, Redman had just one carry for five yards before going down. He'll now be in a race against time to get cleared for Week 12. If you're facing a roster crunch, Redman can be cut loose with relatively little fear that it will backfire.

The Steelers reportedly planned to alternate Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer every two series in Week 10.

In other words, Redman wasn't punished for his costly first-quarter fumble. The game plan called for Dwyer to handle the second quarter while Redman returned for the third. With Rashard Mendenhall expected back as the Week 11 starter, Redman doesn't need to be carried in 12-team leagues.

Isaac Redman started Monday night's Week 10 game against the Chiefs but rushed for just 21 yards on eight carries in the 16-13 overtime victory.

Redman got the start over Jonathan Dwyer, but fumbled at his own 10-yard line early in the first quarter and lost considerable snaps to Dwyer the rest of the way. Redman did add two catches for 18 yards. With Rashard Mendenhall (Achilles') targeting a Week 11 return against the Ravens, Redman will go back to being just a situational third-down back. He's on the verge of droppable again.
