Broncos re-signed exclusive rights free agents CB Tony Carter and DT Mitch Unrein.
Carter, the Broncos' No. 3 corner, was a nice surprise in 2012. He played in 15 games, recording 27 tackles, 12 pass deflections, and two interceptions. Broncos signed CB Tony Carter from their practice squad.

Carter was added to the practice squad two weeks ago when special teams standout Cassius Vaughn went down with a fractured fibula. Carter played ahead of second-round pick Alphonso Smith in nickel and dime packages back in 2009.

The former Bronco and Patriot couldn't unseat Marcus Sherels, a preseason star, for the fifth cornerback job. Carter will be on NFL "emergency" lists.

Vikings signed CB Tony Carter, formerly of the Patriots.

Carter will try to come in and win the No. 5 corner job, but his best chance to make the club is as a standout special teamer. He takes the roster spot of undrafted rookie Marcell Gipson, who left the team and was waived Tuesday.

Free agent CB Tony Carter will visit with the Vikings, sources tell Josina Anderson of FOX 31 Denver.

Carter was dumped by the Patriots following the lockout. He's an undersized special teamer that would be a liability if called upon in the secondary.

Patriots informed CB Tony Carter of his release.

Carter was signed off the Patriots' practice squad last December to provide depth after Jonathan Wilhite was placed on injured reserve. He's an undersized special teams-only type and not much of a long-term prospect.

Nickel CB Jonathan Wilhite was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday, though the team elected to bring in a defensive tackle to fill the roster spot. The team has yet to announce a corresponding roster move for Carter's signing.

FOXSports' Josina Anderson is reporting that the Patriots plan on signing CB Tony Carter to the active roster off their practice squad.

It's a sign that Devin McCourty (ribs) might not be healthy enough to play. Carter last saw time in the NFL with the Broncos in 2009.

Broncos waived/injured CB Tony Carter (hamstring).

The former undrafted free agent spent time ahead of 2009 second-round pick Alphonso Smith in some nickel and dime packages last season, but the Broncos are cutting ties in order to give Smith a longer look. Highly undersized at 5'9/166, Carter might get a look on practice squads elsewhere.
