Anthony Davis started at right guard in the 49ers' third preseason game Friday night.
Davis was not able to jump Trent Brown at right tackle, but he is too talented and the line is too shaky to keep him on the bench. Davis should have some growing pains at guard, a position he has not played since his freshman year in college, but he will still be an upgrade on Andrew Tiller. Aug 27 - 8:24 AM

CSN Bay Area calls 49ers OL Anthony Davis' move from right tackle to right guard "official."

Davis says he took "nearly all" the first-team reps at right guard this week. "There are a lot of things to iron out, just getting used to the angles," Davis said. "Getting used to the calls at that position. It’ll take some work, but it’s work I’m going to do." Davis says he's reached out to former teammate Mike Iupati for help. It's late in the summer for Davis to make such a dramatic switch — especially after sitting out last season — but we'd imagine he'll be starting on the interior in Week 1.
Aug 23 - 5:16 PM

49ers OL Anthony Davis is expected to see time at right guard in Friday's regular season dress rehearsal.

Davis only started dabbling on the interior last week, but is already getting first-team reps. After struggling to move past Trent Brown at right tackle, he could quickly be surpassing Andrew Tiller at right guard.
Aug 23 - 3:12 PM

49ers OL Anthony Davis volunteered to play guard.

A right tackle by trade, Davis has had trouble unseating first-team RT Trent Brown to this point in camp, and he likely sees right guard as an easier path to the starting job. Andrew Tiller has been working as the starter, but Davis got some snaps with the first-team in Thursday's practice.
Aug 20 - 2:37 PM

Anthony Davis saw work as the first-team right guard during Thursday's practice.

Davis was thought to be pushing Trent Brown for the starting spot at right tackle, but it might be in the 49ers best interest to get both Davis and Brown in the starting lineup. Moving Davis to guard is one way to accomplish that goal. First-round pick Josh Garnett and Andrew Tiller had been competing for the starting job at right guard.
Aug 18 - 11:53 AM

49ers RT Anthony Davis is now running with the second-team offense.

"I've been very impressed with where Anthony's at," OC Curtis Modkins said. "He's making a real effort to understand it. He's putting in extra time. I don't think any of us could be more impressed with what Anthony is doing right now." It's only a matter of time before Davis is running with the first-team.
Aug 9 - 2:29 PM

49ers RT Anthony Davis reported to the team at 332 pounds.

Davis revealed he weighed 365-370 when he last played in 2014. His 2010 Combine weigh-in was 6-foot-5, 323. Davis said he's now in the "best shape of my life." Davis opened 49ers camp as the third-string right tackle. He will have to fend off Erik Pears and Trent Brown to retake his starting job.
Jul 31 - 4:19 PM

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports 49ers RT Anthony Davis reported to training camp on time.

There were rumors Davis delayed his application for reinstatement in the hopes he would not have to play in San Francisco, but he applied on Monday and is reporting on time to camp. Erik Pears is currently the starter at right tackle, but Davis should be able to easily beat him out if he is in shape. That is a big if at this point, however.
Jul 30 - 2:23 PM

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the "sense" is the 49ers want to keep retired RT Anthony Davis after he applied for reinstatement Monday.

That would be smart of GM Trent Baalke. Last year's right tackle, Erik Pears, was one of the worst in the sport, and Davis has proven to be one of the top right tackles when on the field. It's anybody's guess what kind of shape Davis is in at the moment -- he was reportedly "badly out of shape" earlier this offseason -- but he's still just 27 (in October). He'd be a big upgrade to the 49ers' line.
Jul 25 - 8:25 PM

Retired 49ers RT Anthony Davis says he has officially applied for reinstatement.

Davis first started talking about returning in February, but delayed for months, conveniently missing the entire offseason program. It's unclear if the 49ers plan to welcome him back or relinquish his rights. Davis is still only 27 (in October), but his play was on a bit of a downward trajectory before injuries limited him to seven games in 2014. The Niners do have an opening at Davis' old right tackle position, however. He should be welcomed back if the team thinks he's serious about playing at a high level.
Jul 25 - 1:02 PM

A rep for "retired" 49ers RT Anthony Davis had "no comment" when asked about his client's future.

Davis has repeatedly claimed he plans to play this season, but he has yet to apply for reinstatement. Davis did post videos on Instagram showing him working out earlier this week, but it is not clear if he is attempting to get into football shape. At this point, it would be surprising if he played this season.
Jul 21 - 12:29 PM

"Retired" 49ers RT Anthony Davis has yet to apply for reinstatement.

Davis keeps claiming he's going to play, but the 49ers aren't planning on it. If Davis is actually serious about returning, he shouldn't waste another day.
Jun 27 - 3:33 PM

"Retired" 49ers RT Anthony Davis tweeted late Saturday that "I will play ball."

He has since deleted the tweet. According to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, "those around the 49ers" believe Davis "would have filed for reinstatement off the reserve/retired list long ago" if he were "serious about attempting an NFL comeback this season." If Davis does decide to move forward with coming back, the 49ers will control his rights at a $2.65 million base salary in 2016.
Jun 12 - 6:55 PM

"Retired" RT Anthony Davis has yet to file papers for reinstatement.

Davis hinted over the weekend that he still plans to play this season, but quickly deleted the tweet. A report earlier this month had Davis "badly out of shape." For now, the 49ers are toying with Erik Pears or Trent Brown at right tackle.
May 31 - 6:32 PM

NJ Advance Media's Jordan Raanan hears "retired" RT Anthony Davis is "badly out of shape."

The Giants have been a rumored trade partner for Davis, who wants out of San Francisco if he unretires, so it makes sense that one of their beat writers would do some digging. It seemed like a formality Davis would rejoin the league earlier this offseason, but the closer we get to training camp the less likely it becomes. Davis might rather sit out another year than play for 49ers GM Trent Baalke.
