49ers GM Trent Baalke is unsure if RT Anthony Davis will come out of retirement.
When asked if Davis had filed for reinstatement, Baalke said, "As of right now, I've got no notification from the league to say that he has." Davis has hinted several times at a comeback, even going as far as to call it a "guarantee." Davis hung up his cleats last summer after five NFL seasons. Jan 24 - 11:07 AM

Retired RT Anthony Davis is already talking about a comeback.

"When I return I'll be the best RT in the league again," Davis tweeted Tuesday. "Hands Down." Davis' "retirement" was never expected to be permanent, as he simply stepped away from the game to heal physically and mentally. But an offseason without minicamp and training camp is likely doing his body wonders. The 49ers hold Davis' contractual rights for whenever he returns.

49ers placed RT Anthony Davis on the reserve/retired list.

25-year-old Davis' plan is to resume his career after "a year or so." He's left his team in a bind, following LG Mike Iupati's free agent departure and with a massive amount of turnover throughout the roster and coaching staff. When Davis is ready to play again, the 49ers will maintain his rights.

"Retired" 49ers RT Anthony Davis tweeted Friday that he plans to return to football "in a year or so."

The Niners will maintain Davis' rights, and his contract will be "tolled" during his time away. "I'll be 26 or 27 years old," tweeted Davis, referring to his planned return to football. "I'm taking this time to allow my Brain and Body time to heal and recoup." Davis is currently under contract through 2019. He'll be under contract through 2020 after sitting out 2015.

49ers RT Anthony Davis announced his retirement from football for "a year or two."

Only 25 years old, Davis joins Chris Borland, Patrick Willis, and to a lesser extent Justin Smith in a string of unexpected 49ers retirements. A 2010 first-round pick, Davis was a mainstay at right tackle the last five seasons. He plans to "take a year or so away from the NFL," and left open the possibility of unretiring down the road. Losing Davis is a massive blow to a 49ers offensive line that lost Mike Iupati in free agency. Seventh-round pick Trent Brown, Bills castoff Erik Pears, and RG Alex Boone are candidates to take over at right tackle.

49ers RT Anthony Davis (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Week 4.

The 49ers are "hopeful" RT Anthony Davis (hamstring) will resume practicing this week.

That "hope" comes after fill-in Jonathan Martin got embarrassed in Sunday night's loss. Even were Davis to be ready for Week 3, he'd likely be on a snap count after missing the entire preseason as he recovered from shoulder surgery.

49ers RT Anthony Davis (hamstring) is not expected to return for Week 2.

Backup Jonathan Martin is in line for another start after predictably handling himself well against Dallas' woeful front seven. Davis also saw no preseason action as he came off shoulder surgery.
