49ers OT Anthony Davis announced his retirement from the NFL after six seasons.
Well, that was quick. Davis retired before the 2015 season, spent the entire year away from the game, but came back to the 49ers this summer. He played three snaps Week 1 but had been sidelined the past two weeks with a concussion. The 49ers will move forward with Trenton Brown at right tackle. Davis was the No. 11 overall pick in 2010 and turns 27 in two weeks. Mon, Sep 26, 2016 07:36:00 PM

49ers OL Anthony Davis' main position remains tackle.

Coach Chip Kelly said Davis will also have to be ready to play guard, but that the 49ers will primarily keep him at his natural position. Davis didn't start Monday's romp over the Rams after again contemplating retirement over the weekend. He was on the field for just 3-of-82 snaps.

49ers OL Anthony Davis returned to practice Sunday.

Davis skipped Saturday's session and was reportedly mulling retirement (again), but it looks like he will stick it out for now. Still, Andrew Tiller will get the nod at right guard Monday night, and it would not be surprising if Davis is a healthy scratch. Davis apparently was frustrated with being moved to guard and will now play tackle only, meaning he will be a backup.

A source tells Bleacher Report's Jason Cole that RG Anthony Davis isn't retiring.

The source also says Davis isn't planning on taking any time off. Rumors surfaced Davis is considering re-retiring after he skipped Saturday's practice. He met with team officials all day and is expected to remain with the 49ers, but his Week 1 status remains up in the air.

The San Jose Mercury News reports 49ers RG Anthony Davis is pondering retirement.

Davis missed Saturday's practice due to a personal matter. He's listed as questionable for Week 1, but could retire for a second time after sitting out last season. Losing Davis would leave the 49ers without their starting right guard two days before their opener. Andrew Tiller and rookie Josh Garnett are the top candidates to start opposite Zane Beadles.

49ers RG Anthony Davis is listed as questionable for Monday night's game against the Rams.

He missed Saturday's practice for a personal matter, putting his Week 1 status up in the air. Andrew Tiller is the 49ers' backup right guard.

Anthony Davis started at right guard in the 49ers' third preseason game Friday night.

Davis was not able to jump Trent Brown at right tackle, but he is too talented and the line is too shaky to keep him on the bench. Davis should have some growing pains at guard, a position he has not played since his freshman year in college, but he will still be an upgrade on Andrew Tiller.

CSN Bay Area calls 49ers OL Anthony Davis' move from right tackle to right guard "official."

Davis says he took "nearly all" the first-team reps at right guard this week. "There are a lot of things to iron out, just getting used to the angles," Davis said. "Getting used to the calls at that position. It’ll take some work, but it’s work I’m going to do." Davis says he's reached out to former teammate Mike Iupati for help. It's late in the summer for Davis to make such a dramatic switch — especially after sitting out last season — but we'd imagine he'll be starting on the interior in Week 1.

49ers OL Anthony Davis is expected to see time at right guard in Friday's regular season dress rehearsal.

Davis only started dabbling on the interior last week, but is already getting first-team reps. After struggling to move past Trent Brown at right tackle, he could quickly be surpassing Andrew Tiller at right guard.

49ers OL Anthony Davis volunteered to play guard.

A right tackle by trade, Davis has had trouble unseating first-team RT Trent Brown to this point in camp, and he likely sees right guard as an easier path to the starting job. Andrew Tiller has been working as the starter, but Davis got some snaps with the first-team in Thursday's practice.

Anthony Davis saw work as the first-team right guard during Thursday's practice.

Davis was thought to be pushing Trent Brown for the starting spot at right tackle, but it might be in the 49ers best interest to get both Davis and Brown in the starting lineup. Moving Davis to guard is one way to accomplish that goal. First-round pick Josh Garnett and Andrew Tiller had been competing for the starting job at right guard.

49ers RT Anthony Davis is now running with the second-team offense.

"I've been very impressed with where Anthony's at," OC Curtis Modkins said. "He's making a real effort to understand it. He's putting in extra time. I don't think any of us could be more impressed with what Anthony is doing right now." It's only a matter of time before Davis is running with the first-team.

49ers RT Anthony Davis reported to the team at 332 pounds.

Davis revealed he weighed 365-370 when he last played in 2014. His 2010 Combine weigh-in was 6-foot-5, 323. Davis said he's now in the "best shape of my life." Davis opened 49ers camp as the third-string right tackle. He will have to fend off Erik Pears and Trent Brown to retake his starting job.
