Davis has repeatedly claimed he plans to play this season, but he has yet to apply for reinstatement. Davis did post videos on Instagram showing him working out earlier this week, but it is not clear if he is attempting to get into football shape. At this point, it would be surprising if he played this season. Jul 21 - 12:29 PM

"Retired" 49ers RT Anthony Davis has yet to apply for reinstatement.

Davis keeps claiming he's going to play, but the 49ers aren't planning on it. If Davis is actually serious about returning, he shouldn't waste another day.
Jun 27 - 3:33 PM

"Retired" 49ers RT Anthony Davis tweeted late Saturday that "I will play ball."

He has since deleted the tweet. According to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, "those around the 49ers" believe Davis "would have filed for reinstatement off the reserve/retired list long ago" if he were "serious about attempting an NFL comeback this season." If Davis does decide to move forward with coming back, the 49ers will control his rights at a $2.65 million base salary in 2016.
Jun 12 - 6:55 PM

"Retired" RT Anthony Davis has yet to file papers for reinstatement.

Davis hinted over the weekend that he still plans to play this season, but quickly deleted the tweet. A report earlier this month had Davis "badly out of shape." For now, the 49ers are toying with Erik Pears or Trent Brown at right tackle.

NJ Advance Media's Jordan Raanan hears "retired" RT Anthony Davis is "badly out of shape."

The Giants have been a rumored trade partner for Davis, who wants out of San Francisco if he unretires, so it makes sense that one of their beat writers would do some digging. It seemed like a formality Davis would rejoin the league earlier this offseason, but the closer we get to training camp the less likely it becomes. Davis might rather sit out another year than play for 49ers GM Trent Baalke.
May 10 - 8:55 AM

49ers GM Trent Baalke said the team has not made any decisions on RT Anthony Davis because "he's retired."

Davis criticized the 49ers' front office earlier this week in a tweet that has since been deleted. The former first-round pick has spent most of the offseason hyping his comeback but has not taken any of the necessary steps for reinstatement. "Right now, he’s not in the National Football League," said Baalke. "So there’s no reason to even speculate on what we’re going to do or what we might do." Baalke rightly feels he has better things to do than worry about criticism from a player who isn't even in the NFL.
Apr 29 - 10:36 AM

49ers "retired" RT Anthony Davis tweeted, "I do not want to work with a front office or anyone else who seemingly doesn't want to win as bad as I do."

Davis has been hinting at a comeback for months but has yet to file the paperwork for reinstatement. The 49ers still own his rights but it doesn't look like Davis wants to be part of the team's rebuilding movement. Rumors surfaced earlier this month that the 49ers were shopping Davis, but GM Trent Baalke quickly shot those down. Davis' status with the team is in limbo right now.
Apr 27 - 8:10 PM

49ers "retired" RT Anthony Davis was told by GM Trent Baalke he is not on the trade block.

A Monday report claimed the 49ers were looking to move Davis and SS Antoine Bethea. Davis said Baalke texted him the report was not true, calling it "false reporting." Davis has said he will apply for reinstatement after "retiring" last year, but he has yet to file the paperwork and was absent for the beginning of the offseason program. He may wait until closer to training camp to make it official.
Apr 12 - 9:15 AM

MMQB's Peter King reports the 49ers are looking to trade "retired" RT Anthony Davis and SS Antoine Bethea.

Davis announced earlier this month he will apply for reinstatement, but he also said, "Dealing with [GM] Trent [Baalke} is giving me a headache." The comment was thought to be in jest at the time, but perhaps the relationship between Davis and Baalke has fractured, a running theme during Baalke's tenure. No matter the circumstances, acquiring draft picks for a 31-year-old safety and an already once-retired tackle could prove the best option for a team in the depths of what could be a long rebuild.

Apr 11 - 9:40 AM

"Retired" 49ers RT Anthony Davis did not report for the beginning of the offseason program on Monday.

Davis, who sat out 2015, has said he'll be filing for reinstatement "later this year." The 26-year-old tackle appears content to sit out the more tedious parts of the offseason before resuming his NFL career. We'll see how that sits with taskmaster coach Chip Kelly.
Apr 4 - 1:37 PM

"Retired" RT Anthony Davis tweeted that he'll file for reinstatement "later this year."

"I'll be filing for reinstatement to the NFL later this year," Davis tweeted Friday. "Dealing with [GM] Trent [Baalke} is giving me a headache." Baalke has been in contact with Davis this offseason and has said the team will welcome him back for the final five years of his contract. It'll be a big boost to the offense after Erik Pears was forced to take over right tackle for the 49ers last year. Davis is still just 26 and should return to being one of the game's top right tackles.
Apr 1 - 1:01 PM

Speaking Tuesday, 49ers GM Trent Baalke hinted the team will welcome retired OT Anthony Davis back when he formally applies for reinstatement.

"(By) having a coaching staff that’s new, everyone is starting on a clean slate," Baalke said. "And anything that’s a hangover from the previous stuff gets dealt with a little differently." Davis caught the 49ers off guard with his June 2015 decision to step away, leaving a hole at right tackle they struggled to fill. Davis will almost certainly immediately slot back in opposite LT Joe Staley when/if he formalizes his return.
Mar 22 - 6:15 PM

Retired RT Anthony Davis will apply for reinstatement and wants to play in 2016.

Davis retired after the 2014 season but has been hinting at a comeback since August. According to NFL Network's Rand Getlin, Davis plans to return to the Niners. Erik Pears had a miserable year at right tackle in Davis' absence (57th out of 76 qualifiers in PFF's tackle grades).
Feb 26 - 2:08 PM

49ers GM Trent Baalke reiterated at the NFL Combine that he has "no idea" if RT Anthony Davis will come out of retirement.

Davis indicated last offseason that he might only take one year off, but he's given the 49ers no signs he's intent on coming back. "I’ve had some contact with him," Baalke said, "but I have no idea what his status is at this point." Davis turned 26 last October. The 49ers still control Davis' rights.
Feb 25 - 11:59 AM

49ers GM Trent Baalke is unsure if RT Anthony Davis will come out of retirement.

When asked if Davis had filed for reinstatement, Baalke said, "As of right now, I've got no notification from the league to say that he has." Davis has hinted several times at a comeback, even going as far as to call it a "guarantee." Davis hung up his cleats last summer after five NFL seasons.
