49ers RT Anthony Davis recently underwent surgery on his left shoulder.

Davis injured the shoulder in Week 15, but never missed a game, suiting up through the NFC title game loss to the Seahawks. Davis says he suffered labrum and bicep damage. The No. 11 overall pick of the 2010 draft, Davis has never missed a start. One of the game's top right tackles, Davis signed a five-year extension last offseason. He should be ready for training camp.

Sources tell CSN Bay Area that RT Anthony Davis' new contract includes $7.25M in de-escalators if he fails to complete workout and weight requirements.

Davis battled weight problems at Rutgers, where he enrolled as a 363-pound freshman. He weighed in at 323 pounds at the 2010 Combine and has been listed at that weight ever since. Davis' tonnage has been under control in San Francisco as he's started all 48 games and emerged as a cinch top-five right tackle at age 23.

49ers signed RT Anthony Davis to a five-year, $37.3 million extension through 2019, including $17 million guaranteed.

The 2010 first-round pick had two years left on his rookie pact, making it a seven-year contract. He's now the NFL's fifth highest paid right tackle, behind Doug Free, Gosder Cherilus, David Stewart, and Phil Loadholt. Davis had a breakout 2012 sesson after the 49ers briefly considered moving him to guard in the offseason, grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 3 right tackle. Although still not a dynamo in the passing game, Davis took a step forward in protection. Davis has started 48 consecutive games since coming into the NFL. He's still only 23. Both of Colin Kaepernick's starting tackles are now locked up through at least 2017.

Coach Jim Harbaugh suggested the 49ers are no longer considering moving RT Anthony Davis inside to guard.

Harbaugh noted that Davis is "standing out" in OTAs with improved footwork and "a big jump in his play." Alex Boone has taken the early lead at right guard. "He's doing a phenomenal job," Harbaugh said. "There will be competition of course, but he's doing outstanding."

The 49ers are expected to consider moving RT Anthony Davis inside to right guard.

In this scenario, the Niners would start Alex Boone at right tackle. San Francisco hasn't soured on the 2010 first-round pick, but Davis has consistently struggled in pass protection entering his third NFL season. Davis could also stay at right tackle if Boone or rookie Joe Looney looks good at guard in training camp.

The 49ers still expect 2010 first-rounder Anthony Davis to develop into one of the game's top right tackles.

Former Saints center LeCharles Bentley opines that Davis is ideally suited to guard after struggling with pass protection and penalties in his first two seasons. The 49ers believe a full offseason working with coaches will go a long way toward fixing Davis' pass-blocking woes.

49ers RT Anthony Davis has gotten his weight down to 328 after playing his rookie year in the 330s.

Davis' weight has been an issue dating back to his time at Rutgers, where he was at one point benched by coach Greg Schiano for reporting to camp too heavy. Still just 21 years old, Davis says he's now carrying more muscle and less fat. Pro Football Focus graded Davis as the 71st "best" tackle in football last season. Only six tackles were worse in pass protection.

49ers RT Anthony Davis was a "disaster in protection" as a rookie, according to Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson.

According to Pro Football Focus' figures, Davis was the only tackle in the league responsible for double-digit penalties, sacks, and quarterback hits. The Niners' don't have a viable alternative -- and Davis possesses plenty of talent -- so he should retain his starting job in 2011.

49ers coach Mike Singletary isn't planning on removing RT Anthony Davis or RG Chilo Rachal from the starting lineup despite their struggles.

It seems like a lack of faith in swing lineman Adam Snyder more than anything else, as Singletary has admitted both Davis and Rachal have been prone to "breakdowns." The Niners have allowed 11 sacks in the last two games, making even the struggling Cardinals defense a decent fantasy play in Week 12.

49ers RT Anthony Davis has allowed seven sacks so far this season and has been one of the most penalized linemen in the NFL.

The rookie was burned repeatedly by the Rams' Chris Long in Week 10 and has had trouble adjusting to the speed of the NFL thus far. The San Francisco Chronicle's David White lists Davis under his "On the Hot Seat" portion of his article, but, despite his disappointing play, we doubt he's going to lose his job, especially with LT Joe Staley out at least a month.

49ers coach Mike Singletary has praised rookie right tackle Anthony Davis, citing a dramatic improvement in his game play from Week 1 to Week 2.

"The thing that jumped out at me the most was (Davis') nastiness, the ability to run down the field and keep guys off the running back and quarterback," said Singletary, who called his offensive line's Monday Night performance against the Saints the best in his six seasons with the Niners. While monster games from Frank Gore should be expected, former No. 1 overall pick Alex Smith could finally turn into a reliable QB2 with better protection, and defenses keying on stopping Gore.

49ers first-round RT Anthony Davis and LG Mike Iupati have joined the starting lineup this week.

Both rookies have been taking first-team reps, and multiple beat writers believe the switch is permanent. The veteran competition was less than stiff, and the Niners want to see their investment pay off immediately in the ground game. The early progress bodes well for Frank Gore. David Baas and Adam Snyder have been displaced, but will stay on the roster as "swing" reserves.
Mon, Aug 9, 2010 01:01:00 PM

49ers rookie RT Anthony Davis described himself as being in "the best shape I've ever been in."

The mammoth right tackle has replaced fried foods and red meat with fish and chicken. Davis doesn't turn 21 until October, so we're waiting to see how alcohol will affect his diet. All jokes aside, the SF Chronicle sees Davis as the opening day starter as long as he continues to make the right decisions. We still see Adam Snyder opening with the first team, but Davis will be on his heels.

Mike Iupati has a better chance to earn a starting spot at left guard than Anthony Davis does at right tackle, according to SI's Peter King.

Davis is still just 20 years old, and he needs a "Singletary infusion of work ethic," opines King. Davis did struggle noticeably at times with pass protection and false starts in spring practices. The Niners have to be hoping that he'll push for a starting spot during the season, but holdover Adam Snyder is expected to be there in Week 1.
