ESPN Falcons reporter Vaughn McClure reports the team has "prioritized" re-signing free agent RB Antone Smith.
This is despite the two sides having yet to discuss a new contract. Free agency opens two Tuesdays from now, and word out of the Combine was that the Giants are also interested in Smith. He'll be entering his age-30 season and is coming off a broken leg, but Smith has a ton of tread left on his tires with just 44 career touches. He exploded for four touchdowns of 40-plus yards last year. Feb 25 - 10:24 AM

Falcons placed RB Antone Smith on injured reserve with a broken leg, ending his season.

The broken leg actually qualifies as good news for Smith, as he was previously believed to have a knee injury. That would have greatly clouded the 29 year old's status heading into the open market. Now he should still have some value as a big-play threat who was criminally under-used during his time in Atlanta. Devonta Freeman should see an uptick in snaps in Smith's absence.

ESPN's Vaughn McClure reports Falcons RB Antone Smith (knee) is done for the season.

It's a brutal blow for the under-used change-of-pace back, who had been averaging 6.3 yards per carry and 17.1 yards per catch. The timing couldn't be worse for Smith, as he's 29 and heading into free agency. Smith is a hard-luck case who deserves better. With his future completely up in the air, Smith isn't a must hold in Dynasty leagues despite his big-play ability.

The knee injury Antone Smith sustained in Sunday's win at Carolina is reportedly "not looking good."

Smith will have an MRI Monday to determine the severity of his injury. The underutilized big-play back is averaging 2.3 carries per game on the year.

Antone Smith rushed for three yards on four carries in Atlanta's Week 10 win over Tampa Bay.

Smith was bottled up on each of his touches. Only seeing 3-5 weekly touches on 8-10 snaps, he's not a realistic fantasy option despite the early-season big plays.

Antone Smith (neck) is active for Week 10 against the Bucs.

He'll be fine to play his 8-10 offensive snaps. Smith is a dart-throw RB4.

Falcons RB Antone Smith (neck) is listed as questionable for Week 10.

The 29-year-old change-of-pace back can be written off as a fantasy start.

Antone Smith (neck) remained limited on Thursday.

Smith suffered the injury in Atlanta's Week 8 loss to the Lions. He should be ready to go coming off the Falcons' bye, but it's not a given. Criminally underused, Smith will be a dice-roll RB4 if he does suit up.

Antone Smith (neck) was limited in Wednesday's practice.

Smith should be close to fully healthy coming off Atlanta's Week 9 bye. He won't be more than an RB4 against the Bucs.

ESPN's Vaughn McClure reports Antone Smith is "going to be fine" after suffering a stinger Week 8 against the Lions.

Smith was forced from last week's loss after carrying the ball three times for five yards on eight snaps. He's only averaging about 11 snaps per game anyway this season as part of the Falcons' four-man rotation at running back. Smith hasn't found the end zone the past two games after scoring in five of the first six.

Antone Smith exited the Falcons' Week 8 game against the Lions with a neck injury.

His return is questionable. Smith was the second running back on the field, and had been rotating evenly with Jacquizz Rodgers and Devonta Freeman. Rodgers and Freeman should see an expanded workload with Smith sidelined.

Falcons RB Antone Smith managed ten yards on three carries and caught two passes for -1 yards in Sunday's Week 7 loss at Baltimore.

Although Smith has made a lot of big plays this year, he is not involved enough in Atlanta's offense to be trusted as a week-to-week flex option.

Antone Smith caught 4-of-4 targets for 64 yards and a touchdown in Atlanta's Week 6 loss to the Bears, adding two rushes for five yards.

Smith now has scores in four straight games. The six touches were Smith's most of the season, but we still wouldn't say coach Mike Smith followed through on his pledge to get Smith more involved. Smith displayed electrifying speed on his 41-yard catch and run for a touchdown early in the third quarter, but he got the rock just three more times (for 29 yards, of course) thereafter as the Falcons struggled to get anything going on offense. Until Mike Smith gets serious about utilizing one of his most dangerous players, Antone Smith will remain little more than a dart throw RB3.

Speaking Monday, Falcons coach Mike Smith admitted RB Antone Smith deserves more touches.

All Smith has done this season is average 16.3 yards on his 17 touches, scoring four touchdowns. Smith was similarly explosive in 2013, so it's unclear why it's taken the Falcons so long to realize the obvious. Despite his big-play potential, Smith is nothing more than an RB4/5 for fantasy purposes. We don't trust the Falcons to increase his reps enough.

Falcons RB Antone Smith broke off a 74-yard touchdown catch and run in Atlanta's Week 5 loss to the Giants.

Unfortunately, he finished with only one carry for two yards and three receptions (3-81-1). Falcons coach Mike Smith did concede after the game that Smith deserves to be more involved, but to this point Atlanta has utilized a maddening four-back rotation of Smith, Steven Jackson, Devonta Freeman, and Quizz Rodgers. Despite his impressive TD rate, Smith can't be trusted in fantasy until we see evidence that he's getting more usage. Smith ran 4.33 at his Pro Day coming out of Florida State and runs with incredible strength for his 5-foot-8, 190-pound build.
