Jets signed RB Antone Smith.

He takes the roster spot of RB Bernard Piece (hamstring), who was placed on I.R. Smith had a big 2014 for the Falcons, scoring five touchdowns on 39 touches and averaging 6.3 YPC. He got just one carry for the Bears in 2015.

Bears waived RB Antone Smith.

DT D'Anthony Smith was promoted from the practice squad in a corresponding roster move. Signed in early October, Smith ended up notching only one carry in five games. Smith was a lightning change of pace back for the Falcons last season, but evidently isn't the same since breaking his leg. Now on the wrong side of 30, Smith will struggle to find work in 2016.

Bears signed RB Antone Smith.

Smith, who fractured his right leg last season, was released by the Falcons with an injury settlement before Week 1. He was dealing with a hamstring issue. Now 30, Smith has averaged 9.9 yards on his 29 career carries. He's a big-play threat, but injury prone. He'll be the Bears' No. 3 or 4 back behind Matt Forte, Jeremy Langford, and Ka'Deem Carey.

Falcons released RB Antone Smith with an injury settlement.

Smith had been battling a hamstring injury. Smith is a home run hitter, but is nearly 30, and prone to minor injuries. He'll get another chance, but isn't going to be a big part of anyone's backfield.

WSB Atlanta's Zach Klein reports the Falcons are working on an injury settlement with RB Antone Smith (hamstring).

They will place him on injured reserve if the two sides cannot work out a deal. Smith made several big plays last season but could never carve out a consistent role. This is good news for Terron Ward's roster status.

Antone Smith strained his hamstring on a 1-yard touchdown run during the second quarter of Friday's preseason game against the Titans.

With Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman both sidelined, Smith was the feature back for the entire first half. The speedster finished with nine carries for 18 yards, but was able to hobble his way around the edge for the score after pulling the hammy. Smith may now fall behind Terron Ward in the battle for the No. 3 RB job.

ESPN Falcons reporter Vaughn McClure called Antone Smith "the forgotten man" in Atlanta's running back rotation.

Rookie Terron Ward has been getting first-team reps ahead of Smith even with Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman both out with hamstring injuries. The Falcons have been hesitant to give Smith a full workload since suffering a broken leg in November. The 29-year-old has just 29 carries in three NFL seasons.

Falcons RB Antone Smith (broken leg) has resumed practicing.

Sidelined since November, Smith had been sitting out OTAs until this week. He probably still won't be truly full-go until training camp, but his health is not a concern. A true home-run hitter, there will be a part to play for Smith in new OC Kyle Shanahan's system as a lightly used "COP" back.

Falcons FB Antone Smith is still rehabbing his fractured right leg.

Smith broke his leg against the Panthers in Week 11 while covering a punt and subsequently underwent surgery. He's resumed running but isn't expecting to gain full clearance until training camp. Smith is a sneaky name to file away with talent-maximizing Kyle Shanahan now controlling the offense. He averaged 10.1 yards per touch last year and scored five touchdowns on his 36 touches.

Falcons re-signed RB Antone Smith.

Smith is one of the league's most-explosive playmakers, but is going on 30 and recovering from a broken leg. In a more just world, he would have received stronger interest in free agency, but it's not surprising that he didn't. Hopefully he'll be utilized more by Atlanta's new coaching staff. OC Kyle Shanahan usually knows what to do with playmakers.

ESPN Falcons reporter Vaughn McClure reports the team has "prioritized" re-signing free agent RB Antone Smith.

This is despite the two sides having yet to discuss a new contract. Free agency opens two Tuesdays from now, and word out of the Combine was that the Giants are also interested in Smith. He'll be entering his age-30 season and is coming off a broken leg, but Smith has a ton of tread left on his tires with just 44 career touches. He exploded for four touchdowns of 40-plus yards last year.

Falcons placed RB Antone Smith on injured reserve with a broken leg, ending his season.

The broken leg actually qualifies as good news for Smith, as he was previously believed to have a knee injury. That would have greatly clouded the 29 year old's status heading into the open market. Now he should still have some value as a big-play threat who was criminally under-used during his time in Atlanta. Devonta Freeman should see an uptick in snaps in Smith's absence.

ESPN's Vaughn McClure reports Falcons RB Antone Smith (knee) is done for the season.

It's a brutal blow for the under-used change-of-pace back, who had been averaging 6.3 yards per carry and 17.1 yards per catch. The timing couldn't be worse for Smith, as he's 29 and heading into free agency. Smith is a hard-luck case who deserves better. With his future completely up in the air, Smith isn't a must hold in Dynasty leagues despite his big-play ability.

The knee injury Antone Smith sustained in Sunday's win at Carolina is reportedly "not looking good."

Smith will have an MRI Monday to determine the severity of his injury. The underutilized big-play back is averaging 2.3 carries per game on the year.
