49ers ILB Navorro Bowman has been voted onto the All-Pro first-team in two straight seasons.
Although not as heralded as teammate and fellow inside linebacker Patrick Willis, Bowman is nearly as good. Over the last two seasons, he has racked up 292 tackles, four sacks and 14 pass breakups, earning a five-year, $45.25 million extension from the Niners in November. Chalk up another hit for Penn State's linebacker factory. Jan 29 - 8:19 AM

49ers signed ILB Navorro Bowman to a five-year, $45.25 million extension, including $25.5 million in guarantees.

Bowman was due to hit free agency after the 2013 season. One half of the most dominant inside linebacker duo in the NFL, Bowman has emerged as a premier run defender over the past two years. The 2010 third-rounder was rewarded with an All-Pro selection last season and is well on his way to a Pro Bowl spot this year. Bowman has racked up 100 tackles, two sacks, five passes defensed, and an interception through 11 games. All four starting linebackers for the 49ers are now locked up through 2015.

Navorro Bowman set a career-high with 18 tackles in the 49ers' Week 3 loss to the Vikings.

Patrick Willis sustained a leg injury in the second half and Bowman benefited. Still, there's plenty of elite standalone IDP value here even if Willis is back for Week 4. Bowman racked up 143 tackles last year and is on pace to shatter that mark this year.

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco believes ILB Navorro Bowman "seems to be entering Patrick Willis-territory."

Bowman broke out in a big way as a sophomore, racking up 143 tackles and going to the Pro Bowl. He added eight pass breakups, two sacks and three fumble recoveries. Willis still has the edge in real life and IDP circles, but the gap isn't all that wide. Bowman is a clear LB1, especially in leagues that place an emphasis on tackles.

49ers ILB Navorro Bowman will wear the team's defensive headset in place of Patrick Willis (hamstring) against the Cardinals.

Larry Grant will take Willis' spot on defense. San Francisco's front seven shouldn't miss a beat if Grant plays as dominantly as he did last week. As for Bowman, he has been one of the top inside linebackers in football this season, by all accounts. He ranks fifth in the league in tackles, with more even than Willis, and also has seven pass breakups.

The 49ers credit ILB Navorro Bowman with 35 tackles, two more than All Pro Patrick Willis.

The NFL credits Bowman with 30 tackles, good for fourth in the league, while Willis is tied for 31st with 22 tackles. Either way, Bowman has exceeded expectations as Takeo Spikes' replacement. The 49ers have their inside linebacker duo for years to come. Bowman has been a key cog in fantasy's No. 1 defense through three weeks.

The Sacramento Bee is projecting Navorro Bowman as the 49ers' new starting inside linebacker.

Takeo Spikes has signed with the Chargers and said that the Niners didn't show much interest in re-signing him. Enter Bowman, who showed some promise in spot duty last year but ended up getting beat out by Spikes. Still, there's plenty of upside for tackles when you're playing next to Patrick Willis like Bowman will be.

49ers ILB Navorro Bowman led the team with 26 special teams tackles during his rookie season.

Bowman also showed promise with eight tackles -- actually 15, according to coaches' film review -- during a Week 17 spot start in place of Patrick Willis (hand surgery). The Niners held Arizona backs under 3.5 yards per carry in that game. With Takeo Spikes scheduled for unrestricted free agency, Bowman's fast finish could get him a look for a starting job in 2011.

49ers ILB Navorro Bowman was unable to finish Sunday's game against the Seahawks due to a hamstring injury.

Bowman may have been able to gut it out if the score wasn't so lopsided. He is just depth behind Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes anyway. The third-round rookie has 34 tackles on the year.

49ers ILB Takeo Spikes was the team's nickel linebacker for most of Week 8, with rookie ILB Navorro Bowman playing next to Patrick Willis.

Singletary told Spikes in a face-to-face meeting in late September that the veteran remained his starter, but he's apparently decided to change things up. Bowman had three tackles in the win over the Broncos, while Spikes had seven tackles and a fumble recovery despite the reduced role.

Navorro Bowman filled in with the first team at inside linebacker Wednesday with Takeo Spikes (knee contusion) sidelined.

Bowman, a third-round pick, likely isn't ready to start next to Patrick Willis after playing outside linebacker at Penn State. But the Niners are thin at inside 'backer and Bowman may be forced into the role. Consider Spikes questionable for Sunday's game against the Chiefs.

49ers signed third-round LB Navorro Bowman to a multi-year contract.

Bowman tore up opposing backfields in the Big Ten while starring in Penn State's 4-3 defense, but there are questions about his lack of size in the 49ers 3-4 scheme. He'll start out on special teams and perhaps passing downs. If he bulks up, Bowman is plenty talented enough to take over as the future "Ted" inside linebacker.

49ers third-round pick Navorro Bowman is working primarily at the "Ted" inside linebacker position.

Bowman appears slated for a backup role behind Takeo Spikes. He'll have to beat out veteran Matt Wilhelm, something Bowman should have no problem doing once he adjusts to playing in a 3-4 for the first time in his career.

49ers third-round pick Navorro Bowman worked at both the "Mike" and "Ted" linebacker spots this week.

Bowman's greatest asset is his speed, but he doesn't project as an every-down linebacker in San Fran's 3-4. We suspect he'll be limited to special teams and perhaps some passing downs as a rookie.

49ers coach Mike Singletary confirmed Friday night that third-round pick Navorro Bowman will focus on special teams in San Francisco.

He's just too small to play linebacker in the Niners' 3-4. "He is going to come in and add depth," said Singletary. "He's going to come in and help out in special teams and work his tail off to learn the defense." We like the rest of the Niners' picks (Anthony Davis, Mike Iupati, Taylor Mays) so far, but this one was a head-scratcher with Clemson pass rusher Ricky Sapp still available.
