49ers placed ILB Navorro Bowman (knee) on the reserve/PUP list.

Bowman had zero chance at being ready for Week 1 and is unlikely to play before midseason. He wrecked his knee in the playoffs, tearing both his ACL and MCL. Michael Wilhoite or Chris Borland will fill in next to ILB Patrick Willis. Without Bowman, NT Glenn Dorsey (torn biceps), and OLB Aldon Smith (suspension), the 49ers' defense may not be its usual shutdown self to open the year.
Aug 25 - 8:59 PM

49ers placed ILB Navorro Bowman (knee) on the active/PUP list.

As expected. Bowman is going to be sidelined throughout camp and the entire preseason. He's unlikely to return until Week 9, following San Francisco's Week 8 bye. Michael Wilhoite is the favorite to open the season in Bowman's starting spot next to Patrick Willis. Bowman shredded his ACL and MCL in the playoffs.
Jul 23 - 3:26 PM

According to the Sacramento Bee, the "smart money" is on ILB Navorro Bowman (ACL, MCL surgery) returning after the 49ers' Week 8 bye.

Likely to open the season on reserve/PUP, Bowman could return in Week 7 in a best case scenario. As San Francisco's bye is the following week, however, Week 9 as a target date makes sense. The 49ers will hold a camp battle to choose Bowman's first-half replacement. Michael Wilhoite is the early favorite.
Jul 21 - 1:27 PM

49ers ILB Navorro Bowman (ACL, MCL surgery) will be placed on the active/PUP list when he reports to training camp next week.

It's merely a procedural move, as Bowman is expected to open 2014 on the reserve/PUP list. Bowman is five months removed from knee surgery and targeting a midseason return.
Jul 19 - 3:46 PM

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco projects 49ers ILB Navorro Bowman's (ACL, MCL surgery) likeliest possible return dates October 19 at Denver or November 2 against St. Louis, following San Francisco's Week 8 bye.

So that's Week 7 or Week 9. Maiocco is just guessing, but it's an informed guess. The Niners are tentatively expected to use a rotation of Michael Wilhoite and rookie Chris Borland next to Patrick Willis until Bowman returns.
Jun 4 - 9:46 PM

49ers ILB Navorro Bowman agreed to convert $3.27 million of his $4 million 2014 base salary into a signing bonus in order to create cap space.

Bowman doesn't lose any money and instead gets a $3.27 million check handed to him. He'll earn a fully-guaranteed $730,000 base salary this season. The move creates a little less than $3 million in cap room for the 49ers, money which could possibly be used for a Colin Kaepernick extension. Bowman continues to recover from a torn ACL and MCL. He will start the season on PUP.
May 22 - 3:12 PM

49ers GM Trent Baalke confirmed he expects ILB Navorro Bowman (knee) to open the season on the PUP list.

Bowman is making progress from his knee surgeries, but is just two months into his rehab program. He's not going to be ready for Week 1 and a mid-season return remains the most likely timetable. If the 49ers place Bowman on reserve/PUP, he'll be ineligible for the first six weeks.
Apr 25 - 6:09 PM

49ers ILB Navorro Bowman (ACL, MCL surgery) expects to return "about the middle of the season."

Bowman said Tuesday that he's ahead of schedule in his rehab, but mid-season was always his most likely return date. Speaking in February, coach Jim Harbaugh all but assured that Bowman would begin the year on the reserve/PUP list, costing him the first six games. Bowman is a little more than two months removed from shredding his knee in the NFC Championship Game.
Apr 3 - 1:05 PM

49ers ILB Navorro Bowman (ACL, MCL surgery) says he's ahead of schedule in his rehab, and that the 49ers are "excited" by his progress.

Although it's nice to hear Bowman is ahead of schedule instead of vice versa, it's still extremely early in the rehab process. We're unlikely to get a realistic idea of his potential return date before training camp. Coach Jim Harbaugh has suggested Bowman will begin the year on the reserve/PUP list, costing him the first six games of the season.
Apr 1 - 9:39 PM

Coach Jim Harbaugh doesn't expect ILB Navorro Bowman (ACL, MCL surgery) to be ready for Week 1, and considers midseason Bowman's most "realistic" return date.

"Realistically, halfway through the season (or) something like that would be more realistic," Harbaugh said. "But I never underestimate NaVorro Bowman." Harbaugh's words are a strong indication that Bowman will begin the season on the reserve/PUP list, automatically costing him the first six games. Bowman was even further along in the postseason than Robert Griffin III was when he tore his ACL, so Week 1 was always a remote possibility.
Feb 20 - 1:29 PM

49ers ILB Navorro Bowman is undergoing surgery on his left knee Tuesday.

Dr. James Andrews will perform the reconstruction of Bowman's left ACL in Pensacola, Fla. Bowman suffered the gruesome knee injury that wrecked his ACL and MCL in the NFC Championship game three Sundays ago. Bowman has youth working in his favor -- he's just 25 -- but is highly questionable for Week 1.
Feb 4 - 11:07 AM

49ers ILB Navorro Bowman (torn ACL, MCL) won't undergo surgery for "two or three weeks," and is without a timetable for a return.

The swelling around Bowman's MCL must dissipate before he can go under the knife. It's the same issue that delayed Rob Gronkowski's operation. Coach Jim Harbaugh declined to speculate on when Bowman might return, saying "he’s got grueling rehab ahead." Bowman is highly questionable for Week 1.
Jan 21 - 4:21 PM

Profootballtalk reports 49ers ILB Navorro Bowman has been diagnosed with a torn left ACL and MCL.

Per a league source, the diagnosis was confirmed by a Monday MRI. The 49ers should release official word sometime this week. Although an MCL tear is a much smaller issue than an ACL tear, it will delay Bowman's operation. His MCL needs time to heal. Even were Bowman to go under the knife today, he'd be in a race against time to get cleared for Week 1. Now, he's a serious candidate to begin 2014 on the reserve/PUP list. It's a huge blow for the 2013 first-team All Pro, but he does have youth on his side. Bowman won't turn 26 until May. For what it's worth, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Bowman is expected to be ready for Week 1. In reality, it's too early to have any sort of a grip on his return timeline.
Jan 20 - 5:40 PM

Profootballtalk.com reports the 49ers fear ILB Navorro Bowman injured both his ACL and MCL in Sunday's NFC Championship loss.

An MRI will reveal the extent of Bowman's knee injury. MCL injuries on top of ACL tears can delay the time of surgery, as Rob Gronkowski tore both ligaments this season and had to wait over a month before going under the knife. It appears Bowman is going to be very questionable for Week 1 of the 2014 season.
