The Canadian Press reports Doug Flutie has spurned an offer to return to football as a Toronto Argonaut.

Eric Crouch is currently the Argos' starting quarterback after injuries to Damon Allen and Spergon Wynn. Flutie was offered a contract to serve as a backup.

Flutie finished with a 23-9 record as an NFL starter, even though no franchise ever committed to him for long. Flutie threw for 86 touchdowns and 68 interceptions in the NFL. He also won three Grey Cups and won the league’s Most Outstanding Player in the CFL six times.

They probably wouldn't hold a press conference to announce he's staying, but you never know. Patriots have replaced his locker, which is probably a good indication which way he is leaning.

The former Heisman winner and 21-year pro quarterback is admittedly considering a career in broadcasting.

Doug Flutie has reportedly decided to retire.

At best, he was going to be the No. 3 quarterback in New England this season. Flutie threw for 86 touchdowns and 68 touchdowns in a career that spanned 20 seasons, but lost both playoff games he started. He will pursue broadcasting.

That would seem to indicate it's possible he'll return to be their No. 3 quarterback. The team did the same thing with Troy Brown last season.

"If the opportunity is there, I think he’ll be back," agent Kristen Kuliga, said. Flutie would compete with Matt Cassell for the backup job behind Tom Brady. If he retires, the 43-year old will reportedly prepare for a career in broadcasting.

Very surprising move by New England to put Flutie down on a sentimental day where many of the fans in Foxboro wanted to say goodbye. Instead, rookie Matt Cassel will likely replace Tom Brady during the game.
