The Steelers gave up 1.31 fewer yards per carry with NT Steve McLendon on the field last season.
The difference was the highest among defensive lineman who played at least 300 snaps. Signed by the Jets in March, McLendon will be faced with the tough task replacing Damon Harrison. While he does not have the prototypical size of Snacks, McLendon proved last season he can be a significant force in the middle. Even without Harrison, the Jets' defensive line should remain among the best in the league. Jul 23 - 11:52 AM

Jets NT Steve McLendon said he is "not taking over" for Damon "Snacks" Harrison.

Harrison signed with the Giants after four years with the Jets. McLendon was added at least in part to replace him, but he does not buy the comparison. "He's big and strong. And he can move. That's why I said we're two different players," McLendon said. "He's a traditional nose tackle. I'm a defensive tackle." McLendon is listed 40 pounds lighter than Snacks, but he has been a highly effective run defender throughout his career. As long as Muhammad Wilkerson shows up, the Jets' defensive line should remain one of the best in the league.

Jets signed NT Steve McLendon, formerly of the Steelers, to a three-year contract worth up to $12 million.

The Jets' local media had the two sides finalizing a deal on Tuesday. McLendon has put pen to paper and will be first man up in trying to replace NT Damon "Snacks" Harrison, who left as a free agent to join the Giants. McLendon is a steep downgrade, but has plenty of starting experience in the 3-4 scheme. He was PFF's 23rd-ranked DT/NT against the run last season.

Newsday's Kimberley Martin reports the Jets are expected to sign free agent NT Steve McLendon.

The Jets are in the market for a new nose after losing Snacks Harrison to the rival Giants. McLendon played just 330 snaps for the Steelers last season, starting 11 of Pittsburgh's 18 games. He finished 23rd against the run in Pro Football Focus' defensive tackle grades. McLendon would be a big step back from Harrison.

Free agent NT Steve McLendon is visiting the Jets on Monday.

It is the first reported visit for McLendon, who is reportedly looking for an opportunity to play more snaps after being limited in Pittsburgh's defense. With the Jets losing NT Damon Harrison to the Giants in free agency, he could get that opportunity in New York. McLendon turned 30 in January.

Steelers NT Steve McLendon (shoulder) has been ruled out for Week 11.

McLendon has been playing limited snaps at nose for Pittsburgh this season. Rookie Stephon Tuitt could see an expanded role with McLendon sidelined.

Steelers NT Steve McLendon (shoulder) has been ruled out for Week 7.

McLendon lasted just 16 snaps in the Week 6 loss at Cleveland before going down. The rotational run-stuffer has a sprain. Second-round rookie Stephon Tuitt should have his role expanded.

Steelers NT Steve McLendon has been sidelined since last Friday with a concussion.

McLendon is day-to-day. Entering the second year of a three-year, $7.25 million deal, McLendon is penned in as the starting nose tackle. He'll be bookended by LE Cameron Heyward and either Cam Thomas or rookie Stephon Tuitt.

Steelers NT Steve McLendon added 17 pounds this offseason and is up to 330.

McLendon wore down as last season progressed, losing snaps down the stretch. He still played stout run defense, and should be harder to move this year. The Steelers' first-team D-Line projects as LE Stephon Tuitt, NT McLendon, and RE Cameron Heyward. Cam Thomas will be the top backup at all three spots.

ESPN Steelers reporter Scott Brown suggests NT Steve McLendon could be "primed for a bigger role" in 2014.

The Steelers traditionally remove their nose tackle in all nickel situations, but McLendon is a candidate for more playing time on passing downs given their lack of depth on the defensive line. McLendon could pair with Cameron Heyward as inside pass-rushers in sub-packages.

Steelers NT Steve McLendon (ankle) is expected to return for Sunday's Week 16 game against the Packers.

McLendon has been out since Week 12. He'll return to a rotational run-stuffing role in the middle of the Steelers' front.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports Steelers NT Steve McLendon will "miss a few weeks" with the ankle injury he suffered in Week 12.

The Steelers ostensibly feared a more major injury because La Canfora says McLendon's diagnosis was "overall positive." It's still a big blow to Pittsburgh's already shaky run defense. McLendon is their 325-pound nose tackle.

Steelers NT Steve McLendon left Sunday's Week 12 game against the Browns in the second quarter with an ankle injury.

His return is listed as doubtful. A combination of Al Woods and Ziggy Hood will replace him in the starting lineup.

Steve McLendon is expecting to be the Steelers' every-down nose tackle this season.

A former undrafted free agent that has been cut four separate times, McLendon is stepping in for Casey Hampton. He certainly doesn't lack for confidence. "The typical Steve McLendon is I want to be powerful and strong like Casey, I want to be smart like Chris Hoke, and I want to be quick and fast like Jay Ratliff of the Cowboys." McLendon did grade out positively while playing 139 snaps as Hampton's caddy last season.

Steelers re-signed restricted free agent NT Steve McLendon to a three-year contract.

McLendon, 27, drew interest from the Packers over the last two days, forcing Pittsburgh's hand to lock up Casey Hampton's heir apparent. McLendon appeared in all 16 games in 2012, registering seven tackles and two sacks. He played just 139 defensive snaps, but he can expect to see a hefty uptick this year.
