Packers SS Morgan Burnett is dealing with a strained oblique, and will miss Saturday's preseason opener against the Titans.
He's week to week. It's noteworthy because Burnett wasn't the same after suffering a hamstring injury last season, getting tattooed for a 135.8 QB rating against. His starting job should be secure to begin the season, but the Packers have second-year DB Micah Hyde as a potential fallback. Aug 7 - 4:28 PM

Opposing quarterbacks had a passer rating of 135.8 when throwing into Morgan Burnett's coverage in 2013.

Burnett missed the first month of the season with a hamstring injury and never seemed to get on track. Of the 42 targets thrown into his coverage, four went for touchdowns. Burnett yielded just two scores in 57 targets in 2012. With a healthy offseason under his belt, we expect to see Burnett rebound this season.

Packers FS Morgan Burnett (hamstring) has resumed practicing.

Arguably Green Bay's best defensive back, Burnett is on track to make his season debut in Week 5 against the Lions. He's a plug-and-play IDP starter.

Packers declared FS Morgan Burnett (hamstring) inactive for Sunday's Week 1 game against the 49ers.

It's another boost for Colin Kaepernick and the Niners passing game. The Packers will be without both Burnett and slot corner Casey Hayward (hamstring). The rest of their inactives: LB Nate Palmer, LB Sam Barrington, G Lane Taylor, TE Brandon Bostick and DE Josh Boyd.

Packers signed FS Morgan Burnett to a four-year, $24.75 million extension through 2017.

The deal includes $8.25 million guaranteed. CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported late last week that the two sides were talking, so this news doesn't come as a huge surprise. Burnett turned 24 in January and was entering the final year of his rookie deal. Because Burnett was previously under contract for 2013 at $1.323 million, the new deal is essentially worth $26.073 million over five seasons, putting Burnett just outside the top-ten highest paid safeties. He racked up a career-high 123 tackles in 2012, grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 16 overall safety.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Packers and FS Morgan Burnett are working toward a contract extension.

Burnett has started all 36 games he's appeared in since being drafted in 2010. He's above average in coverage, and set a career-high with a team-leading 123 tackles last season. Still only 24, Burnett has plenty of upside and should continue to improve as he heads into his fourth season.

Packers SS Morgan Burnett added distance running to his offseason training regimen.

Burnett ran 2.5 to 3 miles per run, which is considered distance running for football players. They usually train by focusing on sprints. Endurance is important for Burnett, as he played every Packers' defensive snap in 2012 according to Pro Football Focus. Burnett also racked up 137 total tackles on the season. We love Burnett's IDP prospects for 2013. He's an elite-level fantasy defensive back.

Packers FS Morgan Burnett's 2013 salary jumped from $575,000 to $1.323 million based on rookie-deal incentives.

Burnett has started all 36 games he's appeared in since being a third-round pick out of Georgia Tech in 2010. In 2012, he set a career-high with 123 tackles to lead the team. Burnett doesn't bring a whole lot to the table in run support, but he's above-average in coverage. He's entering the final year of his deal and is an extension candidate.

Coach Mike McCarthy and CB Tramon Williams are predicting a breakout season for FS Morgan Burnett.

"I personally feel that Morgan has a rare skill set, just like (Nick) Collins had," said Williams. "I think he's going to be a multiple Pro Bowler one day myself. You can mark that down ... He can cover the field." McCarthy notes that Burnett is "stepping to the forefront" as a player who will be talked about "throughout the league."

Packers FS Morgan Burnett broke his right hand in Friday's practice, but is listed as probable for Week 6.

Burnett has been fitted with a cast and is fully expected to play against the Rams. The injury figures to curtail Burnett's interception potential in IDP leagues. Burnett has still been a highly productive player in terms of tackling, racking up 7.6 per game. He has three picks, a sack, and a forced fumble.

The Packers are easing second-year SS Morgan Burnett into camp after his rookie season ended with a torn left ACL.

The best news is that Burnett is practicing at all after reconstructive knee surgery. The Packers remain high on Burnett long term, but he's no lock to earn back his starting job before Week 1. Charlie Peprah is the interim starter.

Despite his rookie year-ending torn left ACL, Packers coaches believe Morgan Burnett can be a "fixture at safety for years to come."

The staff "loves him," according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, and Burnett is the favorite to regain his starting strong safety job in 2011. A third-round pick in 2010, Burnett had one pick and 14 tackles before his Week 4 injury.

Packers placed SS Morgan Burnett (torn ACL) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Just like that, Atari Bigby is back in good graces. Bigby should move right into the starting lineup once he's eligible to return from the PUP list in Week 7. Burnett may be penciled in as the starter in 2011, but he'll have competition.

Packers SS Morgan Burnett is out for the season with a torn left ACL.

It's a big blow to the Packers, as safety is one of their thinnest positions. Burnett had started all four games, picking up 14 tackles and an interception. Derrick Martin, primarily a special teamer, will be first up to replace Burnett unless Charlie Peprah (quad) is healthy. It's also possible that corners Jarrett Bush or even Charles Woodson could be moved to safety. The Packers do have Atari Bigby (hamstring) eligible to come off PUP in Week 7.

The Packers are initially calling rookie SS Morgan Burnett's knee injury a "sprain."

It's routine for teams to call knee injuries sprains prior to MRIs, which can reveal ligament damage. Burnett's injury is not believed to be that serious, however, as he was walking without assistance after Sunday's win.
